I always blew past this when i'd see the thumbnail on streaming - I think the art style didn't click with me, and Injuat don't watch long series, but I loved this video to dive into this show i'd never have given a chance. I don't think I got a phone notification for this upload though, which is unusual.

The reason you weren't notified is because I messed around with a few settings for this video to see what effect they'd have on the video after watching a KZfaq video on upload settings. I used this video as an experiment but unfortunately all it did was seemingly kill the video. So I won't be messing with those settings in future. Also, I highly recommend this anime. Its first season is a challenge but after that you'll realise that you're watching a genuinely great series.

I've been watching/ reading kingdom since 2012/2016 it's on my top 3 mangas with Berserk and One Piece It's really shameful that kingdom is underrated like that it's better by far than most of popular mangas wich people adore

It's genuinely fantastic and sadly underrated. Although it being quite niche does mean that I get to avoid spoilers that other more popular series can't help but constantly share.

I've never seriously looked at Kingdom, either anime or manga. I'm not a huge fan of Warring States Period historical fiction that features the historical persons as significant characters. I also tend not to enjoy shows where the main character used Int for their dump stat. Maybe I'll give the anime a try at some point tho.

I definitely would recommend it despite the first season having awful animation. And despite being dumb, Shin is still a fantastic character and makes up for his lack of intelligence in many other areas.

On the names... So Japan took the Chinese writing system wholesale in the past. This is where Kanji come from. As it is pictographic, almost all the classical words are written the same between the two languages. The languages are so very, very different besides the writing tho. So a Chinese name, written in Chinese characters, is written the same as a Japanese word which almost certainly sounds absolutely nothing like the Chinese word. Sorry if the explanation is a bit rough. Not an expert on the subject, just took Chinese(Mandarin) in college.

You know a lot more about this than I do so I really appreciate the explanation. That's fascinating though. I wonder if there's any similar phenomenon in other languages.

@@liamnidas Korean used to use Chinese characters despite also being very different. In the 1400s? their emperor had another writing system created to replace them tho. This phonetic system is commonly considered one of the best writing systems for its language. No silliness like silent letters or eight ways to pronounce the same three letter sequence. Vietnamese also uses Chinese characters for writing, but I know very little beyond that. One of the things the Qin did after gaining control was standardize the writing. There are well over a dozen different language groups in the Chinese language family, and some of them are extremely different from each other, although never to the extent that Korean or Japanese differ. IIRC counting from 1 to 10 in the native languages of Shanghai, Beijing, and Hong Kong have no words in common. Grammatically all of the languages are more or less the same tho, which is probably because of the standardized writing. What is commonly called Chinese is usually Mandarin. This is the 'standard' language, the language of the government, and close to everyone understands it and almost everyone speaks it. The other one foreigners are likely to encounter is Cantonese. Cantonese is the language around Canton and Hong Kong. It is what a lot of Kung Fu movies were filmed in. I have read that it is also more common than Mandarin for Chinese communities around the world, but I'm not sure of the reliability of this information. So yeah. Even strictly within what is internationally recognized as China's borders there are going to be several different ways to pronounce the written names of people. 林克迪 sounds fairly different in Mandarin and Cantonese. There are websites that will read the charaters to you in the different languages. Oh. Also of possible interest Chinese names are almost always three characters/syllables. The first character is the family name, and the next two are the given name. If you want a fun linguistic thing to look up, look up the lovely poem of 'The Lion Eating Poet in the Stone Den'. It puts english tongue twisters to shame.

@@liamnidas outside of these few Asian languages, all other writing systems are alphabetic or phonetic characters. Even then you do have some instances like this, although they are not as universal. Even American English and British English have a few words that are written the same but sound noticeably different.

Also of possible interest, the professor who I had in college was a 2nd generation Jewish German immigrant who taught the first four semesters of both the Chinese and Japanese courses and had paid for his schooling by professionally playing violin. Excellent teacher who sometimes went off on tangents like this. Truly one of those people who probably wouldn't make a believable character in a fictional work.
