Have you been told or have you heard that you need to spay or neuter your dogs?
This is one of the most common questions I get, because someone heard from their veterinarian, dog trainer, friend, or maybe you watched the Price is Right and Bob Barker told you to spay and neuter your dogs.
Give me your thoughts in the comments below.

Just so people are aware. I’m speaking on my 18+ years of working with all breeds and levels of dogs. From young dogs to old retired dogs, I’ve dealt with almost every health issue out there and have worked with numerous veterinarians all over the country. I’ve seen the damage it does to dogs, and will say this, I’ve seen a trend in more veterinarians realizing that and recommending against spaying/neutering. I will be having a veterinarian on for a team dog podcast/video in the coming weeks.

Mike, for those who don't want to spay or neuter in order to keep said hormones, how do you feel about a vasectomy or tubial ligation? It would prevent unwanted births, but the hormones would remain intact? As for the females however they would still have a regular period and need to be diapered. Thank you🇺🇸

I don't like neutering dogs either, but I find your "don't leash your friend" comment a bit CRAZY. My dog is my dog. I love her dearly but she's not a friend who's my equal. Unlike (most!) human friends, to exist in society, dogs need to be leashed on occasion. I don't let my Cane Corso play in the traffic because I see her as having "equal rights".

people are calling this a owner problem which is isn't if you look at the statistic for stray pets. Most owners buy expensive, good looking dog breeds for the show of it but than dump them when the struggle becomes too much and they realize how hard a pet actually is. Lots of strays also come from backyard breeders who breed their dogs on purpose and the pregnant mothers are usually discarded after they realize how hard having puppies are. Another is when people are forced to move or have kids and they can't keep pets anymore, lots of dogs are dumped on the street by owners who no longer want them just because they are too old or they found better (the reason people dump them is because there are laws preventing you from owning pets again after turning one into a shelter, at least in my state). The little percent of strays dogs comes from accidently pregnancy with owners. I get cats but I don't see the need to neuter any male animal and I don't see the need to spay a female dog.

If your male dog is only living with other males it’s fine, but if you have a male and female together I don’t think it’s cool to never let them fuck. How would you like it if you lived in a house with a female but u were not allowed to fuck her even though you desperately want to. Either get it fixed, or only have same sex dogs or get ready to have and take care of puppies or sell to responsible owners. Also most people work, you can’t always make sure ur dogs aren’t fucking.

The United States is the only place where they heavily believe in just spaying and neutering every living thing in site that's not a human. I absolutely hate it. I've had so many dogs, and the ones that were spayed or neutered always had problems with bone strength and density, incontinence, laziness, weight gain ect. I NEVER had behavioral issues with an intact dog either. I tell people all the time who are getting a dog, to leave them intact, but most people don't listen. And when you ask people why they got their dog spayed or neutered, they just shrug and say "it's healthy for them" or "It's what you're supposed to do." No. Leaving them the way they ARE is healthy. Such stupidity. Thanks for making this video. The stigma around this subject is pure insanity.

I thought the same, my dogs have an active healthy lifestyle and good diet. Two uneutered males, actually father and son, no problems .But now the one at the age of seven, the dad ,he's developed a pereanal tumor caused by testosterone.they grow around the anus area, which is very sore and unpleasant for the dog, constant licking and can get infected, they can be malignant or benign . Vasectomy does not stop the testosterone, which is what causes the problems in males. That's down to responsible owners and training. And it's the production of testosterone in older dogs that causes pereanal tumors etc. One of my uneutered male dogs has developed a pereanal tumor,he is only 7, which is the age these things start. I was against castrating myself until now. But not done until the dogs over two years. You may be lucky with your dogs but you may live to regret it like me, being arrogant.

Dr Karen Becker on this channel is the one to watch, she is right on the money. I personally have no problem with sterilisation, it the method that is currently done I have the problem with. Vacectomy, tubual ligation, historectomy or OSS are the way forward. We don't remove hormones from humans when they are sterilised, so why is this acceptable in dogs? Having no hormones leads to endocrine disorders. Do your homework people.

Would you rather strays get pregnant on streets, females can get assaulted by up to 10 males, and it's always a horrible experience for the female and many diseases are spread by biting aggressively like aids for pets. I have had brought in animals as young as 6 months old having babies and some of the mothers die because their bodies are too young and the other risk is the babies that are in danger because the mum has to travel long ways and sometimes has to leave them alone. Kittens might wander off by themselves into traffic or even worse, and we also have stupid people doing harmful breeding with lots of animals, all stuffed into one house in cages, and that causes more gentic and disease problems. And to top all that off with financial crisis today, people are just dumping their animals because they can't afford to keep them and this is the same for babies who i have seen being left on a train track once in a bga because their owner's cat got pregnant and couldn't afford to keep them and decided to be evil and get rid of them because they didn't want to stigma. Neutering stops animals from getting those diseases, makes them more relaxed so they won't get into fights, and stops them from wandering off. I have had many animals neutered, and they are always the same after its just that they are more friendlier and calmer. Please neutur and spay your pets if you can

Even in the case of a male dog suffering from BPH or an enlarged prostate, you don’t have to neuter. Oral finesteride can be used daily to keep the enlargement down. My lab at 7 was diagnosed with BPH. He had blood in his urine and after a sonogram was diagnosed with an enlarged prostate that was infected. He was put on antibiotics first to cope with the infection with castration as the final remedy. I did not want to neuter him because he was an extremely active high drive lab. So I contacted various vets snd breeders across the country who recommended finesteride more commonly known as propecia as an alternative route. I proposed the idea to my vet who was very open minded and reviewed all the scientific literature I provided. He was then put on a low dose of finesteride. Within a couple of weeks the prostrate had shrunk to the size that the vet could barely feel it in an anal exam. He stayed on finesteride to the end of his life (13.5) years with no more BPH and was extremely active and muscular to the end.

Our unspayed indoor female cat lived to 26 years old! I currently have 6 healthy senior unspayed cats. Female Cats can live a very long life even when not spayed and not all cats develop pyometra and ovarian cancer and you can prevent these diseases naturally. Even spayed cat can suffer from Lymphoma, bone cancer and cell tumor. I believe there are other factors that contribute to cancer like feeding horrible commercial pet food, over use of chemical conventional medicine and vaccinations. Our indoor unspayed cats outlived many spayed cats. I use herbal dewormer and natural herbal remedies and I feed homemade complete balanced high protein low carb food. My cats are healthy and never sick.

I watched my female develop large breasts that I had to pump milk off of when she had her false pregnancies every six months. She lined up her toys and laid on them, crying begging them to take her milk , until I pumped them for her. She eventually developed diabetes from the insulin imbalance that these regular episodes caused. Her slim belly hung like she was an old breeder by the time she was five. Get your vets advice, but just know that keeping your dog from "fucking breeding" isn't the only thing to think about. Ta-da, now we have even more strays that will die out of starvation, sickness and so on...

I think back and forth and chose not to get my dog neutered, I just have to get him under control when nearing female dogs. If you don't spay or neuter your kids don't spay or neuter your pets. The same medical benefits apply to dogs as to humans but that's not enough for us to do it. Yes dog's have hormones and can act aggressive because of that, but so do teenagers. Yes they are overpopulated but so are we but we're not spaying and neutering baby's to keep our population down.

It is immoral to neuter and spay animals. Imagine yourself in that position would you want your own reproductive organs painfully removed at a very young age? The answer is no you would not. Then don’t do it to animals. It is torture. It is unjust. It is cruel. It is evil. It is sadism. Our society has some serious problems with the way we treat animals.

It's because you don't treat animals in the same regard as you treat humans. @@bryceo5637 That is not a good comparison when you have a pet you don't want them bleeding all over your house and furniture not only that but then it's harder to keep them from getting pregnant you have to worry about her getting pregnant and male dogs break in your backyard if you have a male you have to worry about him trying to escape if you have a female you have to keep her in the house all the time.... Plus if you have a male dog hes usually more aggressive if hes not neutered... They try to hump other other dogs and all that... And it's just not good it's not normal behavior that's why that you should get your dog spayed or neutered.. Also it reduces the pet population animal shelters are already flooded with dogs... Let me tell everyone something. Don’t EVER spay or neuter your dog. We ended up spaying our Dutch Shepherd two months ago and it was the worst decision we EVER made. We took a perfectly healthy and happy little crackhead in for the procedure and received a nearly dead Dutch. Nearly two months later (today), she is still in bad shape. She hasn’t been able to keep her food down and when she does, it is extremely difficult for her to do so. Her esophagus was damaged and she lost 25% of her body weight, and still has not been able to gain it back, even though we try feeding her 2x-3x the amount of food she needs. And what did my now ex-veterinarian say? “We don’t know what happened! We’ve never seen this before.” So, after many days in the animal hospital’s ICU, many visits to the specialists (later today again), x-rays, endoscopies, blood tests, nearly $5K out-of-pocket later, etc., and heartache watching our 7-month old female Dutch Shepherd struggle to swallow her food, please listen to Mike. I’m still angry with myself having been “convinced” by my ex-vet to go through this. I get angry thinking about what happened to our “Blue.” Again, Never again will we ever neuter or spay. Blue was a Pipe-hitter of a pup before this! Extremely eager to learn and work. It took me a month for me to re-gain her trust. Dogs know.

They also found another stricture in her nasal passage near her brain which they cannot do anything about, so she is constantly dripping thick mucus from that nostril. Other than that, she is quite healthy. She has to eat mashed up food, etc. But we take good care of her and treat her like any other Dutchie…strict. She receives a lot of exercise because I work from home. They kids love her and Blue loves them. Blue is not aggressive with anyone, but can be when needed. She a good girl and always wants to work. But, never again will we spay. Good thing that Blue doesn’t know any different since this happened when she was a baby. She is two years old now and doing great. Thanks for asking.

You sir just spoke my mind. I've ALWAYS been against altering, especially after I learned more about it. It's heartbreaking that so many rescues and breeders force PUPPIES, GROWING puppies, to be mutilated like this (yes, i consider it mutilation). One of our training clients was spayed as a baby (owners didn't know any better and they had a bad vet who told them it was A-Okay and safe), which screwed up her growth hormones so badly that her body grew so akwardly. It caused her to barely be able to walk and she was in immense pain for a year until my sister recommended her vet to the owners, and that vet watched her walk for about 2 mins before telling the owners she was in constant pain. Luckily the owners learned their lesson and haven't neutered their new dog, and they won't unless medically necessary. Also, I've always hated the term "fixing", it implies something was wrong in the first place, when in reality the act of "fixing" a pet actually removes perfectly healthy and natural organs. All because some owners are lazy and don't want to be responsible. Good on you sir, thank you for speaking the truth!

So glad we took her in despite the recommended wait and see approach. My 14 yo female Chihuahua developed pyometra early this year. I ended up putting her down. It is a life-threatening condition that female dogs can potentially get, usually when they're older. If they get it, it will require emergency surgery to remove the uterus, which will cost a LOT more than a routine spay. I agree that by keeping them intact, they are getting their natural hormones, but for an older female, the uterus can become infected. So please be aware of any pus discharge (usually mixed with blood) around the time of their heat cycle. It will have a bad odor. You will need to visit the vet to check the uterus with an ultrasound or x-ray and do bloodwork to confirm/diagnose the condition. That's my heartbreaking experience. 😢

I went from how soon should I get it done to I’ll wait a year to let him get the proper growth benefits to I’ll get it done in two years when he’s truly done growing to this is a bad idea, not gonna do it. Everyone told me I’d have aggression issues, especially with my other male dog who did get neutered before I got him. My dog has been attacked my three dogs ALL of them neutered, all of the owners “shocked” at what happened. The last dog that attacked my dog nearly got killed by mine. I had mine under control, he’s already 70lbs, but they lost control of the leash and he just wouldn’t stop so I allowed mine to protect himself. Is that a common thing, neutered dogs aggressive towards whole dogs? He’s wise to it now, still never shows aggression to other dogs and wants to play so, no harm no foul as far as I’m concerned. I just make sure anyone who approaches and wants to engage knows he’s not neutered and to keep control of their dog. I haven’t had another neutered male encounter yet.

It's so weird that there's such a push to neuter/spay animals. I adopted a dog and he was not neutered. I took him to the vet to get shots and a general check up. Everything came back good, he is a perfectly healthy boy. The vets/vet techs right away started to push to have him neutered. I even made the appointment and then cancelled because I decided it was unethical to snip him. He is a very good boy that still has puppy tendencies but he's only two. Even when I took him to get groomed they recommended getting him neutered to help with "behavioral issues". The behavioral issue they are referring to is that the groomer was trying to trim strands of hair above his eyes and he didn't like it (understandably) he kept trying to bite the scissors. I don't think that means he has a behavioral issue. I think if you put scissors close to anyone's eyes they wouldn't like it. That is the only "behavioral issue" he has. He rarely barks, I've never seen him growl, he is not an aggressive dog. I told the vet that he is never around other dogs without me being present so there's no way of him getting another dog present.

The US and Canada are the only countries in the world that spay or neuter. In other countries they do tubal litigation, meaning vasectomy for males or tube tying for females. They recognize that removing an organ essential to the body's function, when not medically necessary, is barbaric. There are other methods of sterilization if that's what you want, but it's super rare in this country and will continue to be unless people start demanding for other options. I will not mutilate my animal just because other pet parents are irresponsible. Cutting off one of their organs because you're lazy is what's irresponsible in my opinion. I've heard many people tell me that their sex organs should be removed to prevent cancer in those areas. That's fucking crazy. My dog could get pancreatic cancer, or lung cancer, should we remove their pancreas and lungs too? It's just crazy the amount of bullshit the masses accept without question, instead of thinking for themselves and doing their own extensive research. There are loads of medical issues that can manifest by removing essential organs but people don't even think twice when a stranger tells them how to take care of their animal just because they are an 'animal doctor.' Same with over vaccination, you should titer your pets every few years and only revaccinate as needed. The animal care industry is killing our animals and literally causing premature death's. If you love your dog or cat please do your own research, and if it feels wrong to you, educate yourself through reliable sources and follow your heart. Only we have our animal's best interest in mind.

That’s like saying because there are so many irresponsible and horrible parents out there we should create a system where everyone who isn’t ‘cleared’ should be castrated. Sad reality is life is unfair and can be cruel, but it doesn’t justify causing a different type of harm simply because you think it’s for the greater good. My two friends that are roommates had puppies last year, they kept two of them from the litter, a few weeks ago they said they made an appointment to get them neutered, I explained all the reasons why it was pointless and harmful, and they literally said "dude you aren't a vet you don't even know what you're talking about". So they went and spent $600 each per dog, then the very next morning, one of the dogs jumped and ripped open his stitches because they didn't keep him in the crate, so they had to take him back and spend $1800 DOLLARS MORE to get him re-stitched. They've now been on painkillers locked in their crates for 20 hours a day for the last 2 weeks so they can "heal". I think they are complete idiots for putting their dogs through this...

I'm really happy that I found your video and another one I just watched on KZfaq. These are the types of videos that inspired me to make my own after so long of fearing what people would say as American society is so pro-neuter and pro-spay that dog parents like us get labeled as irresponsible when I have spent months of research because I want to do right by my little one and I am so glad I did not listen. She is BY FAR the healthiest, most intelligent dog we've had to this day...she does not even need to be leashed and she just turned 4 years old and we've never had an issue when she is in heat, we are responsible and vigilant dog parents. The most aggressive dogs I've come across have all been fixed and she is the most well socialised and well behaved dog amongst her peers and people cannot believe she is not spayed, she is a pug and runs 3 miles a day, her legs and joints are strong as can be! Thank you so much for spreading awareness. People need to know that it is the same vets that once pushed early neuter practice decades ago that had catastrophic effects on so many dogs and now its known and proven to be bad practice but the entire procedure should not be a thing at all unless it's for medical reasons. Americans especially need to wake up, there is a reason it's banned and illegal in other countries. If people wanted to do what is best for their dogs they would not blindly listen to a multi billion dollar industry that exaggerates their claims, LOOK at the scientific data that is out there...the risks involved with the procedure outweigh the risks of leaving them in tact. THANK YOU FOR THIS UPLOAD!!!!!

Well said. I also never spay or nueter my dogs. Never had, never will. They have always been very healthy. The first time I brought my first dog to my vet, she exclaimed about the fact that he still had testicles. She had never seen a fully grown intact male dog before....and she was amazed at how well behaved and kind and gentle he was. Most people for some reason think that intact males are mean or something. I've been verbally attacked several times before too for having an intact male. Called selfish. Called irresponsible. One woman laid the death of "millions of puppies a year" at my feet, just screaming at me. Even though I've never had a litter. One guy threatened to call the cops on me because "it's illegal to own an un-nuetered dog!" No joke. He really thought it was against the law.

I have a 3 year old male, miniature poodle and I decided not to neuter him. He has no opportunity to breed and he has a wonderful temperament and is slim and has good muscle tone and energy. I did a lot of reading and the science is very clear on this issue-- Desexing dogs promotes many of the ligament/joint, obesity, bone, skin, endocrine and behavior problems (like fear and obsessive compulsive problems). The American Veterinary Medical Association, ironically promotes the most detrimental things for dogs: Spay and neuter young; feed garbage kibble; use parasite control oral and topical even in the dead of winter in cold regions, etc. They are in bed with big Pharma and so the more illness your dog gets from this bad husbandry, the more lined the pockets of big Pharma, big corporate "prescription" kibble makers and the veterinary industry. I am glad to see that many trainers and breeders are speaking out and letting dog owners know the bad side effects on behavior and physical structure and health. There is a reason why owners who run their dogs in sports (agility, obedience, guarding, herding, etc.) keep their dogs intact. In addition to the physical benefits of the hormones, they are necessary for dogs to develop mental maturity.

I would rather suggested and highly recommending vasectomies than the traditional Spay/neuter, Pharmaceutical business are nothing but a joke, Spay/neutering especially neutering a pet makes them behave way too calm and relaxed that doesn't seem like what they used to before and the most obvious problem that is literally laughable is that Spaying or Neutering is a method that takes a longer time, More wound spot and it makes the surgery cost higher and the healing process longer while vasectomy are a way less intrusive, easier and lesser recovery time operation that seemingly doesnt affect the pet behaviour any much But I do agree pet doesn't need the necessity to be neutered just for a common human mistake for mishandling a pet out of irresponsibility and stupidity, Most human in this world seem to had lost the ability of properly handling and communicating with their pet and many of them treat them like a Luxury Item rather than a living being, The sickening issues of an Soulless and Moral-free World.

Hey brother…..you remind me of my agency’s K9 officers! I’m retired Navy, and retired federal wildlife officer. My Australian Shepherd came into my life nine years ago. Once I totally retired, I didn’t deal with ‘retirement’ well, as there are so many bourbons, and every day was Friday. I firmly believe that she is partially responsible for me getting me back to “plumb”, and to be honest, I regret having had her spayed…..for a number of reasons. She’s my hiking and backpacking partner, but I know her years remaining are growing fewer….too damned quickly. And I can’t help but wonder (maybe selfishly) if not spaying her when we did, might not have given her a few more years. I didn’t know then, what I know now. No sense beating myself up, I’m just saying that I believe your message is valid and sound, for those who haven’t made that decision yet. Bravo-Zulu, brother…..so well said.

As a well researched and highly educated individual, going through vet school, with decades of experience in the animal medical field... My dogs have all lived in between 17 and 20 years old. They’ve all been neutered or spayed. ( *After* full development.) Keeping a male dog who has a natural male drive to “use” his “piece” but won’t actually be “using” his “piece”... seems a bit cruel and poses risks for other dogs. It is very trusted for them. Almost every single dog owner I know, who has not spayed/neutered their pets end up experiencing nasty complications later in the dogs life ending in death or surgery. Most of them end up with cancer... The later in life surgeries/treatments occur, the longer and harder the road to recovery and the greater risk for them undergoing anesthesia. In addition, they never seem to be the same again... I have seen only a handful of these non neutered/non spayed dogs live passed age twelve. The youngest Ive personally ever lost a dog was age 17.5. (That’s the youngest) There are SOOOO many health risks for non spayed/ non neutered dogs. In addition, accidents can happen even to the most responsible dog owners out there. Please keep all of these factors in mind. P.S. Look into feeding balanced raw food diets diets for your dogs. You will be amazed by the health benefits. 👍🏻 (Kibbles are mostly *junk* . Don’t listen when your vet pushes royal cannin and hills science diet. They often push those brands true to financial incentives and/or lack of nutrition education. They are expensive bags of crap.)

And during this time frame they go to our neighbors house, and I split my time between the two of them… it’s only NINE days the males are away… let’s say at most 13. Be responsible and your pups won’t have pups. But you HAVE to separate them… watching them isn’t enough. I made that mistake with the pups mom. She’s a Pinsky and their father is a chihuahua so we have the parents and four pups and we’re a big happy fam!!! Jack and his father Spencer go to neighbor or friends house when hacks sisters and mom are in heat (which is about the same time miraculously) I couldn’t understand why my boyfriend didn’t want to fix them, and now, as I watch all these videos, I understand. I never like the idea of fixing any pups either. The thought of it just made me so uncomfortable, the same thing Joe Rogan said, I wouldn’t do this to any of my children. She was a we lil pup when we got her but they didn't do the procedure for 2 years I believe. She is doing great although being a young boxer/pit She has energy to spare for millenia. Now the other one is a male and I rescued him from a bad home because a friend kept asking me to come get him and said the lady would only surrender him to me. He was neutered before I got him. He is about 8 to 9 yo pit/mtn dog mix at a guess but he's living great now. These are the first 2 animals that I've ever had that was done to.

I'm homeless and people harass me about my dogs being intact. They tell me I'm irresponsible. They call me all sorts of horrible things and try to have my dogs taken from me. What I don't understand is how are there so many countless people who are oh-so concerned with the dog population, yet they attack me instead of shutting down breeders and puppy mills? My pups are healthy and happy. People claim that spaying prevents a dog from getting cancer... Well, I'm sitting infront of a PetSmart right now, and I can't count how many obese cornfed dogs I see coming in and out of this place. I don't see anyone attacking them about putting their dogs on proper diets that don't destroy them from the inside out. Even their vets don't tell them how cruel they're being by destroying their dog's quality of life. I'm supposedly irresponsible for having dogs when I'm homeless... Yet, NO ONE stepped up and intervened in these dogs' lives when they could and should have. But now that I went through hell with them to work through their psychological damage and restore their health, everyone else feels like they are more entitled to these dogs than I am. I'm with these nuggets 24 hours everyday. I rarely even have to give them commands because we're in synch and function more as a unit. But sure, people with jobs and houses deserve to take these dogs from me so that they can mutilate their reproductive organs and let them atrophy in a climate controlled house day in and out. Anyone honestly concerned with "pet" overpopulation needs to actively be pursuing and shutting down breeders. Animals don't need help breeding. They can figure it out on their own. I'd love to know the stats on how many people who insist on spaying and neutering dogs are spayed and neutered themselves. It's called "staying in your lane". Have your own organs mutilated and end your own bloodline. Let others be themselves and do what they do. I can't imagine a world with more dogs and less people being so bad after all. I can't imagine dogs putting holes in the ozone or enslaving entire races, breeds, or species. But I'm just a bumbling, dirty, homeless fool. Don't mind me.

Just to balance out all the people commenting regarding their intact dogs who have lived long and healthy lives... I have always had rescue dogs who were spayed/neutered. They have all lived into their teens (knock wood that my youngsters do as well) and were healthy and exuberant their whole lives. They were not adversely affected by spaying or neutering. And I KNOW beyond a shadow of a doubt that my dogs never added to the population of homeless strays who suffer untreated illness and injury and starvation and make exponentially more homeless strays to suffer the same fate. I do my best to be responsible and make sure my dogs don’t get loose to go exploring, and also that someone else’s loose dog doesn’t come visiting. But I’m not perfect, and my system isn’t perfect, and if I leave my dogs in the care of a friend or relative while I go on vacation, I don’t return to a surprise package in case they also weren’t perfect. There are literally millions of spayed or neutered family dogs out there who are happy and healthy and energetic, and who CANNOT add to the population of strays. If you’re like me, a regular person who isn’t perfect, but does their best to be responsible, and enjoys being greeted every day by a wet nose and wagging tail, please don’t stop with this video when you’re trying to decide whether to spay/neuter.

I'm a new dog owner, I have a pretty girl puppy, I'm not going to let her breed.
