It’s like my high school wrestling coach used to tell us: “Practice doesn’t make perfect, perfect practice makes perfect” and also “You play how you practice”

Thank you for calling it a hitting zone. It's the strike zone for the pitcher .

I know I'm commenting a year after the video, but I just want to thank you. I'm gearing up to hopefully play for the first time in 17 years next spring, and so I bought a bat, a tee, and a net to start working out. I have been doing what you are talking about in your video and it has reinforced what I was doing. The one thing I was actually trying to break myself of was tracking the ball. I don't know if a coach back in the day said something or if it's just something I thought should happen, but I was trying to force myself to focus on the ball. I did not get as good of results as when I tracked where the ball would come from, so I thought I needed to work on that. Now I'm going to just track it the way I naturally did, knowing that it will help me more. As far as moving the tee, I move my feet instead. That way I still hit the net when I'm pulling the inside pitch or taking the outside pitch the other way. Same result as moving the tee. I do need to move it up and down more.

I DON'T agree Matt....I am 65 years old and I haven't played baseball since I was 17 or 18.....I got a few bats about a moth ago and from watching some KZfaq videos I go to my local feed and set up my tee....I hit usually 2 buckets of balls ...about an hour and a half out on the field....I think I have went 4 or 5 times and EACH TIME I see improvement...I still feel I need a hitting coach because when I was a kid your coach was usually somebody's dad.....the better players played while most of the other kids sat the bench....I STILL love your videos

You should do a video on how to throw soft toss and front toss. I can't not believe how bad some HS kids are at throwing soft toss and front toss. Or how many leave their arm hanging outside the cage when they front toss. If your team mate can't throw proper toss you are ruining your swing and would be better hitting off a tee and not hitting crappy front or soft toss!

For me I’m trying to perfect my swing before I go into working on placement.

Great video Matt. And I think this “I’m getting reps mentality” is a big problem with players today. Sad thing is a lot of dads and coaches don’t know how to do it right so neither do those kids.

So I’ll have my son swing a heavier bat on the tee *5 point. And I’ll pitch him in with a lighter bat. Please let me know your thoughts thank you

That will probably hurt more than help imo. I’d Use the heavier bat warming up instead of off the tee.

Ryan Thomas no problem. Using a heavier bat during tee than soft toss or live doesn’t work as you would expect. Swinging a heavier bat during tee than soft toss or live doesn’t give you the same body awareness and feel with mechanics and will more than likely cause bad habits. So when doing tee soft toss or live swing the same size bat. That being said you can warm up with a bigger bat so that when you get to the smaller bat it feels lighter and quicker. Hope this helps a little. Have a good day!

Can these exercises be applied to little league as well? Say 7 years old? My son will be moving up to actual pitching next season. He got a new, heavier bat and wants to adjust his swing to it. Or, should I just keep it simple at this age?

Yes I think some of these can definitely work with younger players.

Hey Matt, do you have any advice for keeping your head in the game and working hard when none of your other teammates are in it and they’re trying to pull you out? I do my best but it’s hard to stay in the game when all I hear are people joking about intentionally throwing the game so we can get 10-runned, go home, and play fortnite...

Option A - Step up and show leadership and accountability. Lead from the front. Option B - Find a new team. If you're stuck with these guys see Option A.
