Helping my family to potty train a 10 month largish mix breed rescue that they have had for 8months. They had live been using pads since they live in an apartment but now want to have the dog go outside. It is a busy city area with a ton of foot and vehicle traffic. They can walk the dog for 2 hrs but she will not go outside. The moment they come back inside the dog pees.

Natalie Wainwright like I said I walked into it already like this. It’s a busy city area so a pad can’t be left out. They live in Greece so there is a complete lack of American level of dog care products. It’s like an early 1980 pet store. Food , collars/ leashes, plastic squeak toys are about it.

This video made all the difference on our pups potty training. We skipped potty pads and went straight to training her to go outside. It was hard because we had to take her outside every 2-3 hours for the first few weeks, along with crate training. However, it was the best time investment ever! There were a few accidents initially, but that is expected.

Thank you for your wealth of knowledge on training pups! I have a Shi-Chi and I live in Toronto Canada. Because of her small size, I get concerned about her wanting to go outside during the extremely cold winter months. Unfortunately, she easily goes potty on the pads, but as you mentioned, she will go on a carpeted area if the pad isn't around. We do have a large tiled balcony that could be reserved for her bathroom breaks, any suggestions? I also bought the fresh patch, should I place that out on the balcony and restart potty training there? Thank you!

Great video. What are your thoughts on artificial turf within the home as opposed to the pee pads mainly for when we may have to be away from home for a few hours (eg. work)?

My puppy is 13 weeks and he just holds it for ages. I try to make sure he doesn’t get the chance to go inside on his pads but he rather holds it for half a day and doesn’t go outside. He’ll poop outside but won’t pee only on the pads. Do you have any advice? All the puppies I had before were different if I took them out often enough I definitely managed to get them pee outside, but he will just hold it for 12 hours if he is in any different situation. Don’t even know how this is possible at his age.

She’s right! I’m having a heck of a time getting my puppy off the pads. She goes outside and comes back in to use the pads. And now she’s missing them. We need the carpets cleaned now.

Michelle, I love your videos and they have been very helpful. My Yorkie is 12 weeks and we don't use Pee Pad for a number of reasons. First, he shreds them instantly 😂. Second, we are retired, so we can take him out often and it's working pretty good. My question for you is, he is tiny (2.5 lbs), so we pick him up and take to the area we want him to go. Should we be leading him on his leash from the house to the ares or does it matter. Thanks for any help!

My Yorkie was so small at 1.5 lbs, I used pads. She transitioned around 4-5 lbs around 6-7 months old outside with doggy door. Had zero issues. But I did literally took her out every 30 minutes just to make it a habit. 🐾🐾🐾 she’s now 9 months and is awesome.

Any advice on how to potty train a 3-4 yr old jack russell/rat terrier mix with small bladder who is dependent on pea pads?? Our last jack would naturally go when outside but when I take this 1 outside he does everything except go to the bathroom. It's rare & I;m working on completely fencing in the backyard so he can spend more time outside & go naturally hopefully. I'm just curious whether or not he is capable of holding it as he goes so frequently. I've considered dog door too but I have a cat. So frustrating lol

Michelle, thank you for this video. I have a tiny 2.5 lb Shih-Tzu puppy that came home to us at 12 weeks. He was pad trained. I followed your advice, and never even put down one of the pads that I had. We got home and went straight to the potty spot. He is nearly 100% after 4 weeks. I got the leash, the little outdoor cage, everything! He even arrived to us with Giardia!!! Which was extremely difficult, which meant diarrhea for days! I had to sterilize everything over and over, and so many baths! Took two rounds of Panacure to fix him up. And yet, we’ve still had incredible success with your method. Your method is fool proof and works. I’m getting such a dreamy dog!!! I sympathize for those who live in apartments, it would be hard, or even dangerous to take a puppy out at all hours of the night in big city. This is a different situation, you guys seem to be doing your very best IMHO. According to my vet, in my rural town, there are a vast number of dogs who have yards at home, who are trained to eliminate in the home on the pad rather than outside. She actually called it an epidemic of un-potty trained dogs. She gave a huge sigh of relief when I told her I hadn’t opened up the pads. We get snow here, so I kick a path for my teeny puppy and he still goes outside. Rain, snow, Giardia, or shine! Thank you!!!

Hi, while I personally currently have a patio, I may not always have such - and certainly increasingly many people adopting new puppies will be a similar situation. It might be a high-traffic video helpful to many (think of all the new yorkers alone) as to ideas for those in apartments without patio/balcony!

Hi. We have a puppy coming home in a week. I am home now but might start working starting October on. I would be a good 7 hours a day a couple of days a week. My idea was to attach the crate to the playpen in the dining room area so he has more room to roam when we are not here. He is a tiny dog now and he won't get much bigger. I want to start training him correctly in case I start working and not confuse him. I saw somewhere where a person built a puppy spot out of grass (or fake grass) to leave in the house in case the dogs have to go and she can't take them outside. Do you think that is a viable option? I have been watching your videos but haven't been able to figure it out how to do it in my case. As of now, I don't know anybody around here who I would trust to come take the dog out for me. Any thoughts? Thanks a lot. Your videos are helping a lot.

We are doing well with potty training outside for the most part, at the same place out front. Now I am introducing a difference place out back to go potty as well. We have a very large covered area in the back and I am thinking about having the puppy (small breed) also train to be able to use a pee pad in the backyard under the covered area for when it rains, etc. Is that all too confusing for the puppy?

We go immediately out the back door to a wood deck. Steps from the deck to yard are pretty far. I plan to us a playpen and pee pads on the wood deck. I can't walk without a leg brace so I won't be able to go across the deck during the night. I will do this during the day. I will get my Shichon on Oct.3rd and wonder what you think of this plan.

What is a good alternative to puppy pads for people who don't have a backyard and can't walk their dog during the day because of work? Should I get one of those indoor grass things? My puppy is already showing signs of bad habits, pooping off the pads, peeing on my bed! Please help.

Walking before and after work is a must. Create a potty pen on a balcony or patio and use the turfgrass trays. Putting up a pen will be a guide for your dog and will help them understand that the designated spot to go is within that area only.

how do I stop my dog from peeing in the house if he's already used pads and I want him to. He doesn't know when he's outside to go potty, he will be outside for 30 minutes and as soon as he comes back in he pees

We rescued a older Chihuahua and they told us she was used to using pee pads. I have not been using them with her but she will go in the living room and potty on our rug sometimes, at least once a day. Maybe because it resembles a pee pad to her. I'm going to stick to you only taking her outside and I'm going to try to keep her from being able to go into the living room and hopefully soon she will start to understand she can't go on the rug. I was a little concerned since she is older but I think with time she can still understand.

Hi Michele, In two weeks we are getting two black lab pups. We are aware of litter mate syndrome and will be keeping them separated for much of the time initially. We are getting a pen for outside time and for going to the toilet. Question is do we have to have two pens one for each puppy even if they go outside separately?

You may find it better to have 2 pens because the grass will get pretty trampled and urine saturated with 2 dogs going in the same spot. Remember the pens outside are for potty only not playtime. We dont want to confuse them about what to do when they are out there.

Out of curiosity would using a pee pad out in the garden for a short while help? I know it may be a dumb question but its just something I'm curious about because the pee pads are scented so that the puppy will pee on it so maybe it might incentivize the puppy to pee outside too

Hi Michelle, thank you for all these awesome videos. Our puppy Oreo is 16 weeks old and we got him one month ago. We have never used pee pads, but with summer almost over, I keep thinking about our brutal winter a few months out (we live in Chicago area). Is it still possible to not use pee pads when there is all the messy snow outside?

You can also create a covered pen area for a potty spot if your pup needs a little more time to do their business, but you still want them to learn that going outside in the snow is no big deal. I started taking my 8 wk old puppy outside for the first 3 day u til we saw the vet who said no outside until vaccinated for leptospirosis. So we stopped going out to our yard and started using pads. My dilemma is: I have a 7week old puppy rescued from a puppy mill, he was very sick 2 weeks ago and has no vaccinations. I live in an apartment building in a massive city and I have no way to accommodate a safe "potty pen". I've been using pee pads, but I don't like the waste. Hi Michele, I’ve been watching your videos and learning lots. We recently got a puppy and she was already being trained to go on pee pads from day one with the previous owner, so we continued training her like this but also training her to go outside. Within a week she learned to use the pee pad successfully and also is going outside. She wakes up at 5am every day to pee and poo on her pad. I have some health issues and live in a building surrounded by green areas but am wondering if it’s ok for her to do her pee and poo in the early morning (5am) on her pee pad until I can take my meds and get my body moving to take her out. We’ve been taking her out for walks since we got her. Now She is 3 months old and recently got her 2nd vaccination. I walk her 4 times a day starting at 8am, 12pm, 4 pm then last walk 8pm. Please let me know if the 5am pee pad is ok.

Yeah im in same boat. Live in an apartment, and while there's plenty of grass and places I'll be able to walk her, I'm waiting until she's fully vaccinated to be taking her outside, no need to risk her getting sick

Please tell what should one do with a 40 days puppy? Can't take them out to poop and pee because they are way too small and can catch viruses. So how do we manage pee and potty training until then and more importantly how do we transition from it to outdoor pee potty training?

Yes, puppies should never go potty in their crate. This is the space for them to sleep and rest only.

Needing some advice.....new puppy owner....puppy with us for over a month....puppy was rescued because he was living on the street with mom and brothers...the thing is that when he arrived he was doing pee and poop outside but the weather and time here make us changed the habit so we begin successfully to use the pads....he always use the pads for pee and poop now....whether better and we begin to take him out and he can do poop but refuse to pee!!...even when going for 4 hours to the park he wait until we get home to pee!!....don't know what do to because I don't want completely eliminate the pads because I don't have cage and I live in a apartment so I can't use what you recommended here in this video.

HI Dulce. It will be much harder for your pup to understand that you don't want him to go in the house if the pee pads are always present. You can use a puppy pen when you're not home if a crate isn't available. Keeping him confined to one area can help as you transition him away from pee pads. When you are home you may want to leash your pup up and keep him close to you so you can watch for any signals that he needs to go potty, and immediately take him out. The more praise and reinforcement he gets for going outside the better understanding he will have about where to go potty.

I have a question! I will be getting a 8 week old puppy. What is a good time to stop given the puppy food/water so that I don’t have to take him out at night or have accidents. You can begin training your puppy as soon as 8 weeks! Start with the basics of potty training, crate training and establishing a schedule. As he gets more comfortable, begin with the good stuff like the games found in our online course!

I had to train my puppy on the pad because of the frigid temps we had this past winter. She just could not handle sub freezing temps and several inches of snow that was outdoors.

Q: we trained our puppy to potty outdoors from the start. She also more or less goes on cue or with prompts. But there are times we’d like her to potty on a pad or in a designated area indoors. Tips for adding “you can potty here/on a pad if it is provided” to her training? She is 7 months old, topping out at 11 pounds, and doesn’t really care if do/don’t potty here spray is applied to the area. When we are away from home, she is worn out, or the weather is bad (tall wet grass on a cold windy night, etc), she’ll skip communicating and relieve herself indoors without warning. Usually in the evening and less than an hour after her last potty break. We’d like to be able to fly with her too so tips on getting her to potty when and where we need her to in the airport and potentially on a pee pad on the plane would be great. (Not flying more than once a year.)

Great question. We really NEVER encourage any puppy parents to encourage potting in the house, even on a pad. Your puppy doesn't know the difference between a rug, a puppy pad, the carpet, etc! To them, it is just another part of the house. Encouraging them to go on the pad, even if it is just in one place, is also encouraging them to potty in the house. But they are also told to only go outside and NOT go inside... You can see how this may get confusing to a new puppy brain! 😅 For the first steps, we recommend you get a real grass patch, whether making one your own or a Fresh Patch, that offers a place to potty, but is real grass. This encourages them to at least go on real grass, just like the outside. We'd recommend you dig into this video a bit more to learn about the Fresh Patch and some other helpful tips when it comes to this topic: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/d5mGgciT37y0oqM.html

@@HowToTrainADreamDog How do dogs learn to pee in the right place in airports and/or planes? Arrive 2+ hrs early for a 6 hr flight, then the 1-2 hrs it can take to get luggage and get outside. It's a long time.

@@j_j9902 If you don't want to take the dog out frequently, you should get a dog who is already housebroken. It's JUST NOT POSSIBLE for a 12 week old puppy to hold their urine for 6-8 hours at a time. Crating helps IF the crate is the right size, because dogs have an instinct to not soil their beds. We are in our 70s and will have the tray of grass in the big bedroom crate for overnight. The rest of the time we will be taling puppy out every 2 hours or when letting it out of the crate. We have doorbells. Some folks just install a puppy door.

I have a 9 month old Yorkie. She has been “trained” to use. Potty pad in a kennel. What is your suggestion to get her to go outside? I have a large yard. I never let her out alone. She loves it outside. But of course she doesn’t’ get that she should be going out there. How do I keep her from accidents while I am gone?

My puppy is 11 weeks, We just got him two weeks ago, he goes pee into the pee pad by himself without teaching him, we were told that we can’t go outside until he has the second vaccine that is due in 2 days. We were wonder if it will difficult for him to learn to do pee and poo outside?

Is it ok to use a big cloth washable pee pad as a rug in indoor playpen as long as I’m not teaching him to go there? I’d still teach to go outside and take out frequently. I just wanted something to protect floors for the “just in case” accidents. I’d take away and wash right away. Getting my puppy this weekend and I’m trying to think it through. We have wood floors and not sure how urine will effect them.

My dog whonis 4 years old was trained to pee on a pee pad and outside. It's been two years that I've taken away the pee pad. He now pee's on my rugs even though I take him out all day long. How do I get him to stop? I can't have any new rugs because he runs everyone of them! Please help!

She's been using puppy pads from the beginning but I just started taking her out everyday but she didn't pee or poop outside, she waits to come inside to poop or pee. Puppy pads are actually very convenient for me and easy. I can't really keep a schedule to keep bringing them outside for them to go potty

We have 4 week old puppies, four of them and they can’t hold it overnight, they only weigh 700 grams. They are still in their whelping pen overnight. We had to hand raise them from 3 days old and both my husband and I are recovering from breast and throat cancer so after 3 weeks we put a tray and pee pad into their whelping box. Works great except for 1 puppy who thinks it’s her new bed, sleeps in there and pees on the blankets.

I can't take my puppy outside, I live on the 11th floor in and my 3-month-old puppy doesn´t have her vaccinations yet and there are literally no places that aren't visited by lots of others dogs. We have had her 5 days, for 3 days she was amazing, and only went to her pads, no she has "forgotten" everything! and is peeing anywhere. Any advice?

I would decrease the amount of space your puppy has inthe house and get some turf to put in a container on your patio for your pup to go on. Keep your puppy on astrict schedule and take them out frequently.

Our puppy came to us at 7 weeks already self trained to use a pad. He uses grass outside if and when we take him out. He is nearly a year old and I have still not removed the pads...fearful of ruining my hardwood and carpet! Beyond rewards and a schedule, is there anything I can do to deter potty in the floor?

I have a 8 week old puppy. I've been losing so much sleep from potty training since she's been using a pad for almost a month. Everytime I take her out, she just won't. She would hold in her poop until she goes inside no matter how long she's inside. I take her to one spot outside, I tried positive reinforcement and tried my best to get distractions out of the way but nothing. She would just bark at me no matter how much she needed to go poop.

I have a 9 week old Chihuahua from Florida, and live in Minnesota. It is so cold, and he is so little. He is successfully going on potty pads. When should I make the transition? Minnesota can have cold, nasty weather for a while yet, and he is only 2 pounds.

I would go "cold turkey" and remove the pads and start teaching pup to go outside asap so pup can learn qickly that you prefer potty outside, not in the house. I can relate, I live in an area where it gets super cold and we get tons of snow. I still take pups outside to potty.

Hi Sweetie So We Adopted a 5 month old Pomski No Bigger than a minute ~ his previous owner had him & 3 other dogs all using pee pads I refuse so we have been diligently going outside & he loves his kennel BUT Just found his Hiding spot for messing in the house (under the side table). How do I break him of this? Please Help 🐾❤️

Good luck with a 3lb chihuahua in Canada when the snow can amount to 40cm or torrential downpours or gusts of wind up to 100 km/hr. That is just not an option for some of us. The only issue I see with pee pads is that male dogs are slower at learning to potty train and our little guy gets confused between any flat fabric surfaced and pee pads. So area rugs and even curtains that are pooling on the floor area confused by our pup. I think I may need to get him to use those special grass type potty pads.

It can take some work but even with stairs, you can train your dog to go potty outside. The more he goes potty inside, the harder it will be to break him of that habit for a lifetime.

I'm wondering why "what if you have to leave your puppy home for a long enough time?" was addressed in this whole video. I have to work and I have a sitter come 4 hours after I leave and then I come about 4 hours after. I mean even if I had to go to the store and my puppy had to go... what then?

If you are using a crate, and you know your dog's potty schedule, then it's unlikely that your dog will have an accident. Crates help dogs learn how to hold their bladders because they are less likely to go potty in that smaller area. And if your dog is young, you'll definitely want to know his schedule for how long he can hold it before you have to take him out again. But even 8 week old puppies should sleep long enough for you to get to the store.

I have a 16 week old golden doodle that potties outside with no problem but she also still potties inside whenever she freaking feels like it. Sometimes it’s tiny amounts sometimes larger puddles. She can pee outside and then come inside and pee 5 minutes later. I hate that I don’t like to have her inside to hang out with us because I never know when she will just pee right then and there. I’ve used treats with her when she potties outside since we got her at 8 weeks. If I don’t have a treat handy I flood her with praise and petting. If I catch her peeing in the house I immediately carry her outside to the grass and tell her to potty outside. What am I doing wrong ?? I have recently wondered if she has a UTI but when she owes on the floor I never notice blood tinge and she doesn’t whine when she owes. She has her last round of shots this week so I plan on double checking.

my dilemma is that i trained my dog to use a pad (protected by a pad holder) on one side of his pen. this is actually great if he just used it as a backup for emergencies or when i was just too tired to take him out or wasnt home. HOWEVER it's how he always goes. I do walk him outside to try to get him to go and sometimes a long time. since that wasnt working i tried more frequent walks but that is also not working. He will actually show when he has to go by jumping up and down in his pen. then i know this is the sign that means he has to go. HOWEVER once i take him out HE DOESNT GO. too many damn distractions no matter how long i keep him out. soooooo. once i get back inside he usually goes almost right away. so it's like he DOESNT WANA GO OUTSIDE. SMH.

hello I know I'm not her but i understand your situation I am 11 years old and my dad works at night so he sleeps during the day sometimes he cant sleep but my brother also goes to school. There will be no one to take care of the puppy or dog so you can put them in a crate with hard chewing toys and their food not the water though. If it sounds like I have a dog I dont lol but i research because i might get one sry its so long

@suri parvizi have a designated spot for your pup to go to the bathroom. This could be a largish container of grass or soil, so it still feels natural for your dog. I’m sure lots of brands make items used for this.

My puppy will be 7 weeks. We just got her two days ago. She got her first set of shots already. She’s only 3 maybe 4 pounds. Is it still recommend to take her outside to potty. She’s been doing really good going on the pee pads. I just don’t want her to get sick or get parvo.

It's best to consult your vet about vacciantion schedule and if they feel it's safe to go outisde. I don't live in a high Parvo area so I set up a puppy pet outside and take my pup there to go.... I talk more about it in this video: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/pKuXYNNlzM65fYE.html

It's hard to know exactly what is happening without more context, but at this age most puppies are still having accidents. Some things to examine: are you keeping her on a schedule, is her crate too big, is she getting mental and physical exercise each day, are you cleaning up with an enzymatic cleaner, outside of her kennel is her area restricted, is her crate covered, is she overall content in her crate, are you noticing any other issues that could point to a medical condition, etc. There's a lot more going for pups on than we realize so these are all things to look at.

It's your responsibility to be there for your puppy to meet their needs. If you cannot be there, you must hire help from Rover or WAG, or ask a friend.
