having transition issues as well- my pup is 15 weeks today, and all he wants to do outside is chase leaves and eat grass- he even had a rock in his mouth!! uggh- this is my fourth dog over a span of 30 years or so, but for some reason i can't remember the potty training days with any of the first 3! i have mostly lived in apartments, but with this new pup we are in the countryside, and I've actually got lots of grass but no fenced in area- and the fact that he's so distracted, it's frustrating me to no end! any suggestions?? thanks!!

Hi Joanne, this is pretty normal, and he will eventually outgrow it. In the meantime, take him out only on a leash to minimize his access to distractions and take him to one spot. You should set things up on a schedule. I have a house training cheat sheet I could send you if you email me at john@askthedogguy.com.

@@pooh123592 much improved since my comment 10 months ago- he has most definitely outgrown that phase! he loves going out to do his business and goes right away pretty much - i guess every dog is different and wow it takes patience and perseverance on our part, but it's worth it 😊 hang in there!!

going through the same issue right now, trying to transition my 5-month old poodle from pee pads to outdoors. We got him in December and the NYC winter + lepo/parvo outbreak + living in a 3rd floor walk up did not lend itself to immediately training him outdoors. We actually tried outdoors immediately for the first few weeks and it was working, given with some accidents, but we stopped out of fear he would catch something and get sick. outdoor training starts tomorrow and we're planning on taking him out of the crate first thing in the morning so he can mark his scent and continue to go in that spot, but what's your reasoning for not removing the pads completely from the apartment? he will be going on the pavement outside, not grass. we will also supervise him heavily (and use the crate when we can't) during this transition period. Do you think removing the pads will cause more accidents than it's worth? we're worried that keeping the pee pads inside will confuse him. thanks for your help, this video was great!

Hi Marissabee. I think removing the pads and cold turkey may result in more accidents. It might be okay, but slower is always faster when dog training. 😄 Try keeping the pads in place but moving them closer to the door very gradually while reducing their size. Also, put the same type of pad in place outdoors where you want him to go more permanently. Weigh down with some rocks and use if you can an already soiled one. Again, very gradually reduce the size. If you send me your email address, I can send you a chart and a cheat sheet review. - - John “Ask The Dog Guy” Wade - 🐾Embracing Science and Common Sense🐾 Visit www.askthedogguy.com For A Free Weekly Newsletter & FREE Brain Drain Activity Guide For Your Dog

My puppy is 3+months ((under 4)) she was doing great with puppy pads she still was taking a pee on the floor and not the pads only no more than2 times other than that training her on the pads was gojng great and those rare accidents not on the pad wasn’t so much of a deal as I knew she was learning and accidents were expected reassured she knew where to pee on her pads .. BUT all of a sudden she has began to use my floor throughout the house to pee !! 🤦‍♀️ i don’t understand why she has suddenly gone to the floor ?? I’m still continuing with the pads and my response to her peeing on my floor is responding consistently &repeating my same reaction each time Changing my tone and calmly sayin the words On your mat whilst placing her in the middle This is what I did when I first started puppy pad training and was successful untill now . Do you have any ideas on why you think she has started peeing off the mat ? I would be greatful to hear your thoughts and opinion . Hope this makes sense 🐾🐾

Hi @SAEW1495, When a puppy of that age and gender (possibly, but less frequently, males) has been doing “great” and “all of a sudden” starts peeing with frequency here and there throughout the house, it's almost always a Urinary Tract Infection (UTI) or something similar. Take her to the veterinarian; if that's the diagnosis, the vet will prescribe some antibiotics, likely ten days worth. By the third or fourth day of the antibiotics, you should be able to get things back on track. If the diagnosis is a UTI and you find things aren't better by the fourth day, get her back in with the veterinarian. Over the past year, quite a few of my clients who have had pups with a UTI have found that the standardly prescribed antibiotic hasn't worked, and it had to be switched to another. If you have difficulty getting her back on track, email me (john@askthedogguy.com) and ask for my free “Puppy House Training Cheat Sheet.” - John “Ask The Dog Guy” Wade “Dog Training That Embraces Science and Common Sense” 🐾
