As I recall, I used Discover generated card numbers for quite a while and they they stopped that features (10-15 years ago). I think their rational was that their fraud detection was good enough. Now-a-days, I will use Google pay or Amazon pay if it is available since this is like an indirect/virtual_card. My rational is these large companies would take security extremely serious. If we pay online and don't have other options then we use our regular CC but do NOT check the option to save the card for future ease-of-use. If they don't have that option then as soon as the order goes thru then we go to that site and delete the CC from our account.

I was introduced to privacy virtual cards thanks to your videos. The biggest issue I came across was just recently, and it has to do with returning online orders in-store. Some stores only do in-store returns and require the physical card present in order to process the refund, so if you made a purchase with a virtual card, you're probably stuck.

Well it looks like for us who are not US residents, there are not many options. It is basically either Revolut or our local banks if they issue virtual cards (they do in my country). For fellow EU residents, N26 (a German online bank) is also one other option. I also want to add that Google Pay (or Google Wallet) does the exact same thing as Apple Pay and you could have mentioned it too in that segment of the video.

This video has been very helpful as I am considering a updated budgeting strategy that includes adding the security step of a virtual card. In my research, I must correct you when, @2:10, you state "...you can not use Privacy on a mobile wallet..." perhaps Apple Pay or/and Samsung pay, but there are more than these two mobile pay alternatives. Hi Josh, I'm brand new to the channel and to security in general. I love your content so far! I apologize if I missed you answering this but, if a virtual card gets hacked and has bogus charges, do we still get reimbursement? My cards have been hacked a lot recently, so I'm interested in this option, but I also have the reassurance that my bank will most likely refund any fraudulent charges that went through. Thanks!
@AllThingsSecured
@AllThingsSecured Жыл бұрын
Welcome, Christian! So no, you won’t get reimbursed since they will technically be debit charges on your account (in most cases). However, there are two advantages here: 1) a card cannot be charged for more than your limit. 2) a card cannot be used for a different merchant So the odds of somebody stealing your Netflix card to spend no more than $20 *also on Netflix* is pretty low.

I have seen major US banks offer virtual credit card numbers that work with an existing credit account with that bank. For some reason they stopped offering these, and it makes me wonder why? There must be more value for them in us not having that freedom. Limiting who, and how much and how often a vendor can charge against a virtual credit card probably results in less collected fees and smaller credit card balances, which ultimately cut into the banks profits. Just my theory.

I obtained a Discover card years ago (2015?) because they offered a pretty good VCC product - for both 1 time only usage & single merchant recurring charges. Worked great, easy to use. And after a couple of years, Discover discontinued. I spoke to a product manager who said it was because it was cheaper for Discover to offer the zero-Risk that customers could get bogus charges dropped than to provide the VCC platform. But as I pointed out, zero-Risk does nothing to stop fraud. It literally just passes the cost to the CC finance charges incurred by many customers every month. VCC is pro-active prevention while programs like zero-Risk are reactive & band-aids at best. And we have to trust the zero-Risk programs work 'well' every time. I love the VCC concept - no longer do I depend on merchants guarding my sensitive information like CC data. If a VCC is stolen, (let's say some Merchant doesn't encrypt that data...), so what? it can't be processed again. No more card# theft-based fraud. Why wouldn't banks, card issuers want this? As long as they don't actually eat the cost of fraud, they don't care. CC users, merchants pay as we have since day 1 through finance charges & transactions fees.

If a bad charge hits my account, then I’ll deal with it. It’s a minor inconvenience at that time vs. lots of time maintaining virtual cards. That said, I do try to use Apple Pay first, then some virtual cards I’ll create from my bank (ex: cap one). But most of the time, I use the real cards. The stress and frustration was immense and affected more than just me, and it was only by involving the Financial Ombudsman that it got resolved. Compared to that, the small amount of effort to manage one or two virtual cards is a minor inconvenience 😉 Living in the UK, banks don't have your back sadly.

You miss the point. If you have to change your "real" credit card number due to fraud or whatever you now have to visit many online merchants to change your online payments. While you are waiting for a new card to arrive you are in a position where all your online accounts like Amazon for instance can't charge purchases. It's a royal pain to change your CC number. One number per online merchant and now if anything bad happens you simply cancel the stolen card and you can issue yourself a new number immediately. I use Capital One for my Virtual Cards so it has the same $0 liability we have become accustomed to with cc protection laws. AN additional feature with Capital One is the virtual numbers are limited for use with one web domain only making them almost useless to a thief.

I have recently applied to Klutch. I have not yet used it because I'm not sure of the best way to pay it off. I chose Klutch because it's a regular credit card. But I failed learn that they want the same access to my accounts as the others in order to pay the bill. My initial, but incorrect assumption (and yes, I know what that means...) was that I'd have a bill to pay just like my regular credit card. But it appears they don't bill you. They want online access to your accounts. It seems they want the same access as all the others, (Privacy, IronVest, etc) ... Instant which is Direct Access to my bank account via Plaid, Manual which is Routing/Account# to my bank account or pay via Wire Transfer. I am still new at this but none of these options strike me as safe. I have looked on KZfaq but can' t seem to find a video on how to securely fund these services. Between Privacy, Klutch & IronVest, all of whom would really like my bank login creds, is there some kind of documentation or video out there that could guide someone on the best secure funding practices to these companies? I mean, the whole purpose behind virtual credit cards is security. But they all seem to want direct access to your bank which kinda defeats the purpose. I love the idea of virtual credit cards but I'm not yet comfortable giving these particular entities my bank info. Maybe I'm already doing this in other ways and just haven't connected the thoughts yet. But I would sure like some kind of info or best practices on the best way to fund these services. Can I ask what option(s) you used to pay your Klutch account and/or Privacy funding source and how you operate it for security? Giving a third party direct access to my BANK account just doesn't seem secure to me. Do you use a separate account some place that you preload or something along those lines? Do you maybe have a video on the best way to fund these virtual cards or how you go about funding them? Thank you !
