I have 25 chicks now from 16 weeks down to 8 weeks. They were all started on Scratch and Peck feed as well. I also ferment and feed mine all kinds of greens. I started with grass and dandelion, then purslane and lambs quarter. I am sure the grass has nutrient value but the soil stuck on the roots starts them out with native pro-biotics native to our property. The three other plants are powerhouses of nutrient value. I have very healthy birds and they have all grown faster that those of others I know.

I ferment organic feed for my 18 hens. Fermenting a gallon bucket daily. I feed it on the fourth day. I sit the bucket of feed into morning and afternoon meals. After water is poured off I have about 2/3 bucket of fermented feed. They love it. As baby chicks not interested until they were a little older.

Hi Dahlia, thank you sharing will all of us. I’m getting my baby chicks in September and this is what I’m planning on doing. Can I start on day one on feeding fermenting feed or should I should I wait 2-3 days? By the way, your Joy is not only a breath of fresh air, but it’s contagious. ☺️

Thank you so much! You can start on day one but I would also make sure to sprinkle some feed around their brooder so that they can find it very easily. It's super important for them to begin eating right away once they get home. 🥰

Ours are just two weeks old! Would I transition the feed, like still offer dry while I introduce the fermented feed? We are using the Scratch and Peck feed because of your recommendation!!

Thank you for teaching us, Dalia!! I, too, use Scratch and Peck mash! I get it from Azure Standard and save money there, too! When winter came, my ferment was not working well so I started adding ACV and that literally speeds the process up to 2 days!! The hens LOVE it!!

I have been buying bulk bags of grains (non gmo) of barley, red wheat, quinoa, millet, brown rice and flaxseed. I do a 3 day ferment. The girls love it! It smells so 😋 good! Like a sour dough starter! Some times I am tempted to eat it myself!

Thank you for (re-?)covering this. I was having problems trying to make this stuff! At first it seemed to make up OK. For my 40-ish chickens & guineas (all born since April, some full-sized, some bantams, all "teenagers") 1 large jar, when mixed w/equal parts dry food and the water from the jar gave all of them a good amount daily. However, tho I used well-water, I didn't realize not to use medicated chick starter crumbles, tho I also did some using 4 grain scratch, and even some w/single ingredients like whole corn & peas. Those did not work so well. I wanted to ask about smell & what appeared to be mold. When I'd feed the jars that looked & smelled OK, I'd feed the whole jar. Plus I used it more as a supplemental (tho they all went for it first) feeding, along w/pans of chick starter, scratch, & treats of dried mealworms/and/or soldier fly larvae. My last batch, definitely medicated, grew blue-ish mold! Thick, didn't smell so great. So, tossed it! Glad I saw this, so I see things that might be the cause of the problems. Will definitely try it again. One other area of concern is that I'm in NE Florida, and tho I have ac, it's super-hot & humid here, and my kitchen is definitely one of the hottest rms in our home. I'm wondering if this is a major factor? Thanks for all you're doing!

Hey there! Yes, the higher temperature will make it ferment faster! So you might just soak it for one day. It should smell fermented and have bubbles. That’s when you know it’s done!

You mentioned sour dough and that immediately came to mind. This is a similar proces to making a sourdough starter. I'm wondering, for the bread bakers out there, (me included,) could we add some sour dough starter to the feed? Would that speed up the fermenting process? Has anyone tried it? I use organic, fresh ground wheat for my sourdough starter and sometimes I have some extra. Why not feed it to the chickens?

Im a new chick owner. Two of which have a slight water belly problem. Not sure if they will survive. I clean their bedding every two days. I check their water feeder two to three times a day. Plus the room temp stays at 78 at all times. Its been two weeks. Today I started to turn off heat lamp and use the natural in direct sunlight. Yesterday Ive noticed two different breeds having watery sac small underneath. Any suggestions

We have had some warmer than normal days here in Oregon. Would it be helpful or ok to feed the fermented feed cool or cold to help the chickens stay cooler

For adult chickens, yes. For baby chicks I would have it at room temp.

Perfect timing! I just got baby chicks. They are 2 and 3 weeks old. Unfortunately I lost 3 out of 5 and only have 2 left. I'm determined to keep them alive and well. I've been giving them some kefir added to eggs and ACV in water for probiotics. I tried fermenting their crumble (organic from Cluck&Co) but I don't see much fermentation happening... What do you mean some crumbles ferment better than others? I also grind oatmeal, wheat berries, flax and sunflower seeds for them and they love it. Could I ferment that?
@WelcometoChickenlandia
@WelcometoChickenlandia Жыл бұрын
I think you could ferment that, yes! Try it and see how it goes. Some processed feeds have ingredients, such as yeast, that affects the fermentation process. The yeast can make the ferment alcoholic!

Hi! I really need your help😢. I have 3 baby silkies, they are 6 weeks and sneezing. No whet noses, very happy and eat good but I can not fix the problem. They live in my shed in a rabbit cage with a heat source. I have ordered some medicine, it's like a peppermint and herb smell and should help but it does not. Is there any way to come in contact with you? I live in the Netherlands. Hope you can help. ❤ Love Maaike 🐥🐤🐔🐓

Can starter feed be given to laying hens?
@latina1700
@latina1700 11 ай бұрын
You can but it doesn’t have the adequate amount of calcium and it may be too high in protein depending on breed. Mine are very active and proficient layers ( everyday if not every other day) and so I give them feed with a bit of higher protein to help with the laying. But their not overweight by any means. So if you give them starter you need to make sure that the calcium is right and that it’s not too much protein for your laying breeds. Someone else might disagree with me but I’ve been told I can do this as long as I put calcium for them to be able to get as they need.
