Had the decathlon (in orange) for a couple of years and I love it. First down jacket I’ve had and I know there are much thicker warmer ones, but I’m amazed how warm this one is for something that disappears into its own pocket. Makes a nice little camping pillow too and doubles up as a little ‘booster’ quilt if my sleeping. A giant quite warm enough.

Great video. So far I've been happy with my $22 clearance 32° Heat Ultra-Light down jacket. The version I have is no longer made. The current version has much larger baffles and it looks like it uses a 650 synthetic down. Mine is 90% down/10% feathers and has been great. Keeping my torso warm down to -5°F (with a base layer and outer shell - Note: my body does run on the hot side of things)

Wish I'd known about these years ago. Great for portability and as backup layers to keep in a bag or vehicle. While I already have an expensive down jacket that I love, I often wear lighter and more easily layerable alternatives for quick outings, or on warmer days. I'd like to see how effective these things are at the current temps we're getting up north. About -20 C

Hi Justin. Got a decathlon jacket at the start of winter here in Vancouver. It’s been awesome, and I love that it’s not super pricey. I have a Trek 100 in down and synthetic. Both fantastic. I live in a damp climate (Ireland) so I prefer the synthetic for everyday use. If they had a chest pocket and a hood cinch, they’d be perfect. Sizing is way off though. I wear a medium in most brands and X-Large for Decathlon.

When it comes to buying specialty products with varying levels of cost, there could definitely be a graph showing a steep upturn in cost in relation to smaller and smaller gain in utility. If you wanna be warm, that's cheap. When you wanna be warm, maximally comfortable, and have little tiny improvements that just barely matter, that costs.

I've got one, and it's good for 95% of AU use. The Icefall is $400, still 300g but better down, and more of it. But I also like that I don't have to be as careful with the cheaper jacket.

My 5 y/o model is a little lighter (15oz) and has 5.5oz DownTek, no inside stuff pockets but the packing pocket is big enough for a 1l bottle. Warmth wise. People rave about the decathlon at 0c. Personally I’m in a much thicker down jacket. I think the decathlon down is maybe ok only at 7c.. it’s barely warmer then a thin fleece You can’t compare the warmth of a 2cm thick down layer v 2 inch + of my propped down jackets It’s about similar warmth to a north face red point. Primaloft… but primaloft better in windy conditions I think

The point that is important is the durability. The quality of stitches. Etc pp. The advantage of decathlon stuff is, they produce it themselves. This makes their products so unbelievable cheap compared to others. Cause they don't need to produce dislocated (low transport costs, taxes, no dependency on other companies to produce parts) etc. But - it would be interesting how long a decathlon jacket lasts compared to a Patagonia etc. I second your opinion in some way but also know that my most lasting stuff was always Patagonia. Decathlon stuff never lastet pretty long. Their trekking pants for example. Stitches get loose very soon after some time of usage. Etc. As i said, yes - their functionality might be equal but their durability might differ a lot. Cheers

Hi Justin, I appreciate your videos and I thank you! BTW, i'm from Italy and I notice you (with many other people from US) pronounce the word "decathlon" with the accent to the "a": "decàthlon". IMMO that's wrong/questionable :-). I know that the accent sounds "correct" in English language, but... 1- the word "decatlon" is Greek! (precisely is the concatenation of "deca" (meaning ten) and "thlon": deca-thlon. if you want to pronounce "decathlon" in the original language you don't have to put any accent on the vowels, using just a FLAT (no-accents) speech like de-ca-thlon. This is how we pronounce decathlon in Italy (and in Spain I guess). 2- On the other side, decathlon is a French brand, and you use Decathlon to specify this brand sport articles, as the nice cheap puffy jacket you enjoy. So, in French the word "decathlon" is pronounced with the accent to the last vowel, the "ò", like "Decathlòn". IMMO, you can pronounce in this best option orders Best: "decathlon" - (flat / no accent) a la Greek (latin/Italian) manner Questionable: "Decathlòn" - (accent to the ò) a la French manner Worst: "decàthlon" - accent to the à, a la English manner Let me know what you think about. BTW, back to the jacket product, jsut for your curiosity: there is an alpinistic version of the MT100 jacket, probably a bit better (and at a the same price!), but unfortunately not available for the USA market (as far as I understand) and i do not the reasons why. Decathlon mysteries!

Better set up: -merino whool underwear -polar fleece mid layers (2 thins is better than 1 thick), with colars -synthetic thin bodywarmer with colar -membrane rain jacket with hood and zip pits -use with beanie, buffs, gloves (and perhaps rain mitts), and gators Layer your head, neck, body, legs and feet, depending on situation. I love REI products because as someone who doesn't go outdoors a lot anymore but still loves to, the value proposition makes a lot more sense than getting an extremely expensive Arcteryx or Patagonia piece. But, let's not fool ourselves here. As someone who owns Arc, Pata, and REI products, the REI products are simply not as good, especially against Arc. Arc materials are simply out-of-this world, and their specialized pieces are really, really good. I'm content to wear the Arc pieces I have remaining until they give out, then replace with REI products as I don't go out hiking as much anymore. You have to know which market segment you're in!

I really wish Decathlon made more of an effort to enter the US market. Opening two stores in San Francisco and then throwing in the towel just doesn't seem very inspired. I've never disliked a product i've bought from them. Bike parts, 60L bag, puffy, camp kit, it's always been good. Their online stock in the US has been really limited since they closed the SF locations a few years ago and we don't really have a retailer that's similar.
