Stop Water Draining from Sprinkler Heads

Welcome to The Sprinkler Channel. Glad you made it to this video because this is going to save you from having those annoying draining issues where water continues to seep out of the sprinkler head even after it is off and the wasp love this because they can use this mud to build their wasp nest. This is most common when you have a sprinkler head at the bottom of a sloped lawn area. We are going to explain how a simple part called a check valve could solve all your problems and how you could use your existing pop-up head and just add a check valve to your sprinkler head to solve the issue. Thanks for the video. All these years and I never had a sprinkler system. At first I thought it was a leaking valve. I'll have to see what kind of Sprinkler head I have before I try and get a check valve.

thank you for this info. ive been dealing with this issue for years to the point my driveway was sinking and had it fixed with foam injected to raise it.

They probably don’t have this at Home Depot but at a sprinkler supply store more likely

I have a 2 inch hardtop orbit, can you recommend where I can buy a check valve for that? I’ve been to Home Depot and sprinkler world, and they don’t have anything for it.

I don’t unfortunately, might be worth replacing with one that has the check valve available.

Hello, If I install this valve on the lowest sprinkler on a sloped area, will the water completely stop flowing out of the section? Does the problem not move to a higher sprinkler on the slope? I think I will have to install this valve on every sprinkler on the slope.

The pressure caused by gravity / weight of the water in the line lessens the higher up on the slope it is. If the grade difference is too great, not even these will hold the water back but yes you might need to install on a few of the lowest parts. See as you go.

Most sprinkler supply stores that only sell sprinkler stuff should have them.

do the rainbird 5000 have a check you can add?

They have them engineered already into them up to I think 7’ slope drop. Not able to change it out from what I know.

My problem is actually just one sprinkler head constantly spewing just a little water even after that zone is off. Furthermore it’s at the very top of a steep slope. So maybe a control valve stuck ? Beyond my knowledge.

From your description it does sound like the valve is opening sporadically which isn’t a common issues. I would make sure the solenoid on the valve is turn tightly to the right for that zone and all zones. Apart from that, I would also see if the same thing is happening with any of the other heads. Let me know what you find out and anything questions you may have.

I can't find just the check valve anywhere. trying to not have to replace the entire sprinkler head

Does your local sprinkler store not carry any automatic drain plugs? These specific ones are of the brand King. Perhaps you can find them online if not in any of the big box store

Hey there...I've got a leaking sprinkler issue and that led me to this video. The sprinkler head is at the low point of my lawn so I bought one of those hunter check valve sprinkler heads. Just installed it and unfortunately water still trickles/oozes out of the top. Any suggestions?

My first question would be how much lower is that head than the highest point of that zone? If it's too great, no check valve will be able to hold it close. Another thing that comes to mind is to make sure that the valve isn't staying opening (check solenoid closed and that valve diaphragm isn't dirty / damaged, etc.) ever so slighting causing very small amounts of water to still flow and pushing water downstream and causing it to push pass the check valve.

@@Jay-gc8vd I finally did get to the bottom of it. Turned out the diaphragm in the valve had a little hole in it. That hole allowed water to pass thru even though the sprinklers were off. Simple replacement and with the new diaphragm in the problem is solved. Maybe check that. Good luck.

I have only found these at a sprinkler supply store. I’d also search the Internet for check valve for pop up sprinkler head.

@@leanaleach1108 Some local story here said it will not, for rain bird you have some popup models that already came with that check valve incorporated as the 1804 SAM Series.
