Great video, I thought you explained the misconception of Mini LED always being better than regular FALD TVs quite well, I saw this first hand when the QN90A and Q90T were placed next to each other the Q90T showed more detail and slightly more blooming but the QN90A crushed details to hide blooming and get closer to acting like an OLED in most scenes I thought the Q90T held up better because important details got lost on the QN90A. Also its more about the algorithm than the the amount of zones and you covered that very well.

Q90T was d BEST. Its like ART. QN90A was nice tho. I did NOT have issue with it when I saw in store. Maybe u could try to tweak it. Seeing something in store is never accurate!!! I saw Hisense U8G 65” beside QN90A, LG CX, SONY A90J….the CX A90J looked AWEFUL AWEFUL AWEFUL, but Hisense LOOKED WORSE--at fisrt. I had to hunt down the employee to ask him to change to --STandard mode. He had on --Energy Saving mode. N back light on 💯, black level(brightness) set to 50%. And then i found d Samsung QN90A. I moved around its setting, it looked Great. N d doughy guy in store they were --really agreesive so bitchy that I went straight asking for U8G n QN90A. He kept berating the technology n brand, n kept trying to pulllme to look at OLED, n LG QNED. Ughhhhhh. 😮 U might want to re visit the store, get remotes first. Cuz they really are trying to promote LG QNED(cuz they a re not selling). N some other OLED (they get much higher commission).

If TV manufacturers were serious about producing LCD TVs that catch up with OLED displays, they would be implementing and improving the "Dual Cell" technology that Hisense introduced in 2021. In the Hisense U9DG Dual Cell TV, a 1080p black and white panel was placed behind the 4K RGB panel. This functionally provided the TV with over 2 MILLION "local dimming zones", and as the tests in the RTINGS review demonstrated, the results were spectacular. The Dual Cell TV nearly equaled OLED displays in Contrast, Black Uniformity, Blooming, and Wide Viewing Angle. The Dual Cell TV was discontinued (probably because it cost more than other Hisense models) but this LCD technology has the potential to be a highly competitive rival to OLED TVs.

Mini LED can tend to crush a lot of detail in favor of getting an inky image. Sony's approach is subtle. Sony isn't the brightest or blackest, but there's more information in the image, so the result is an image that stands out and has more depth.
@michaelbeckerman7532

Exactly correct. And, just as Sony will always tell you, they make their design decisions with the creator's intent in mind. They want you to see everything that the creator of the content wanted you to see. This is one reason why Sony's consistently provide a much better overall viewing experience than their competitors - regardless of the content you are watching.
@michaelzoran
@michaelzoran Жыл бұрын
@@michaelbeckerman7532 Sony needs to start making decisions based on the fact that it is the intent of the creator for people to be able to see their content without being forced to take out a loan on their home in order to buy a TV. Sony's products are ridiculously overpriced - the point that it represents price gouging. TCL and Hisense offer similar performance for prices that are much better. This is the benefit of competition in sales. Sony is no longer a sales leader, because of the terrible prices of Sony's TV sets.

Honestly oleds have the same issue, there's still crushed blacks too often but with certain content the black contrast can look stunning and you don't get that with the balanced 'sony' approach you allude to'. That said, there is absolutely a place for this balance and I can understand why people opt for it.

@michaelzoran

@@lancealex382 OLEDs have a couple problems. First, the "Burn-In" risk is very real - regardless of what anyone says. If you watch a lot of CNN or Fox News all day, you will eventually end up with "Burn-In" from those colors always being in the same spot. Second, the "Fast Response Times" of OLED helps the videogames with "High Framerates," such as First-Person Shooters and Racing games. However, the "Fast Response Times" of OLED actually has the inverse effect that HURTS the low-framerate movies on Blu-ray, which run at only 24 frames per second. This creates problems with Stuttering, Juddering, and Shimmery in high-speed "Movement" scenes.

As owner of Sony X900h ("55" 2020) 4k 120Hz model (FALD).. which costs $1200 back in early 2021 I can say Sony TVs are superior overall, especially for 90 series & above.. But their price is outragoues.. X90L (65 in) is $1800 in middle east, while TCL 745C (65 in) is like $900 Videos always show cheap U.S prices.. while Euro, Asia, Africa..etc have always have higher prices for Sony I don't care what Sony could bring to the table as long their prcices are 2x, I won't buy from them again

@@user-oq4rm5ci9p not with a Sony and an XR Cognitive processor it isn't. Remember, the XR is the most advanced processor of ANY TV you can buy today. A big part of that is because of the software running inside that processor. The better the software, the more accurately you can control the backlighting. What makes Sony so much better at what it does is really its ability to not only bring superior image processing to the table, but also to bring superior backlight control as well. This is why, just like the video shows, Sony is able to "do more with less". Now, if you need more than that, they offer the mini-LED based X93L. And, as you can imagine, with mini-LED's and its approximately 800 local dimming zones (along with the XR processor) it does everything even better still. That TV is almost indistinguishable from OLED displays in many cases.

QUESTION: There is a a comparison between the Hisense UK7 model vs the Sony X90L online. In this comparison, there is a Starfield test. The UK7 model does not suffer from the "Too Black" problems the TCL QM8 suffers from in the FOMO video. In fact, the U7K actually has superior blacks that are deeper than the Sony X90L while simultaneously displaying more of the white stars - similar to the way an OLED is superior to the X90L. Can you confirm this, Fomo in the specific test you show here at the end of your video?

I actually watched this from my new Sony X90L. I previously had two TCL Q7'S that buzzed and reached out to you on Twitter (thank you by the way). I originally wanted a QM8 after watching you test it out but they didn't have a 55 inch. I ultimately went back to Sony (I had a Sony 900f after a 900e died just outside of the one year warranty). I've been very impressed with the Sony X90L. It's handling of low bit rate content I imagine is much better than the QM8 which should tip it for anyone watching cable TV which can vary per channel, per show or even per commercial. I do think this year's TCL remote is much more comfortable and the soft buttons are great. I also had a issue with VRR while playing Borderlands 3 on the Q7 that makes me wonder if it is present on the QM8. Turning on VRR for that specific game made it look like nighttime and the colors shifted everywhere when you used the stick. One area I think Sony needs to improve is the game bar. Other companies offer more features with their game bar. Additionally, gamers want gaming TVs with more picture adjustments as it's not always about lower response times for us. But overall, I'm supremely happy that I ended up with the Sony X90L over the Hisense U8K, TCL Q7 and QM8 or even last year's Samsung QN90B that I was considering. I don't see myself leaving the Sony nest for a long time. Lol The color and clarity are the first things you notice.

Yeah if QM7 did NOT workout , u find Better panel --great. But usign that QM7 to dictate /predict the OUT come of QN90B, Qm8, U8K is very……subjective . It’s a interesting thinking pattern. Often guys in dating pool do that too. They cant find HOT gf. So they will TESt on “normies” to see how “women are like” n using -that -as land mark to “predict” if girls that are PRETTIER -WILL be (WORSEN). I've been watching a few other channels that have also discussed Sony's X90L as well as their top tier mini LED the X95L and how they out perform most other mini LED TVs even though they both have less dimming zones than most of the competition and it all comes down to their processing and dimming algorithm. Sony revealed just before CES this year that they use their own proprietary tech to better focus their dimming zones as well as better control the gradient of light each zone needs rather than simply being on or off. It's actually pretty cool seeing how it works and because of it they don't need as many dimming zones. Apparently their 2024 mini LED TVs will have an even better version of this tech and some tech reporters that have seen pre-production TVs in action say it rivals current OLEDs in terms of picture quality and deep black levels.

My objective as a reviewer is to match the strength of a TV to YOUR use case. If the flaws I point out is not something you'll ever see, then you win! The QM8 is still my choice for best value HDR TV but the point of this video is to demonstrate what can be done without miniLED (and less dimming zones) - it's obviously not perfect as you saw the raised blacks and blooming of the X90L but the QM8 is still an excellent TV matching the performance of the QN95C more often than not. "On paper" I settled on the Sony X90L and went to Costo to buy one. Costco had a much cheaper 65" TCL and Samsung running on either side the of the Sony X90L. No doubt the Sony has a nice picture, but when I stepped back about 15 ft both the TCL and Samsung were noticeably brighter, and incidentally had good pictures. I realized right then and there that despite all the reviews and descriptions about nits by nerds (meant affectionately), that brightness really is important to me. I purchased the 85-inch Costco variant with the two-year Sony warranty, three-year Allstate service, and same aluminum backlit remote included with the A95L. At some point, I was considering purchasing the Panasonic DP-UB820 for daytime viewing because of its unique ability to convert HDR to SDR while maintaining the wide color gamut on my 4K UHD Blu-ray discs. Being that the Sony X90L was released between four and five years later than the Panasonic DP-UB820, would setting the Sony X90L's HDR Tone Mapping to Brightness Preferred achieve picture quality equal to or better than the Panasonic DP-UB820's HDR to SDR conversion with wide color gamut?

What a fantastic video. Its very easy to understand and very well produced. Anyway, this and a couple of other videos saying similar things is why the 98" X90L is in my top 3 TVs Im considering, along with the 85" X95l and the 85" Hisense UX which I hope you'll test. So putting price aside, if you were buying a TV for a room with a lot of ambient light (large windows), but no direct sun, would you be more excited to get the 98" x90 because its more than good enough and you get that unbelievable size, or would you want to close the gap even more with the superior, but smaller sized 85" x95l? 🙂

I think this goes to show why Sony is more expensive than the other brands. You are really paying for a higher end processor and more polish. That being said, the QM8 still seems like a great TV for the price. So it really comes down to what you care about and what you are willing to spend. If you are in the market for a very good QLED TV, can't go wrong with either for most people.

I spent this past weekend shopping for a TV. I ended up ordering an X90L. At a Best Buy where they had various test videos you could display on the 5 different screens and pause, I saw shockingly little difference between the X93L (not 100% it was an L) and the X90L. The salesman was able to find 1 frame where hte skin toens were better on the X93, but on scenes where there was blooming, frozen n 1 frame, looking carefuly back and forth between the two, I could not see any difference. Really, I thought the blooming was minimal overall. I really wonder if the video world is too obsessed with the deepest blacks. To me, the brightness in daylight scenes of the X90 over the A80 made a big difference in the movie-watching experience, whereas the darker blacks of the A80 were more of a novelty, especially since there was far less detail in shadow areas on the A80.
@stopthefomo
@stopthefomo 11 ай бұрын
These "deep blacks" are only visible in a dark room so BB showroom is not always the best, and more importantly, it depends on the content. For example, in the movie 1917, shadow detail together with deep blacks really make some scenes pop whereas in Aquaman or Infinity Wars? Deep blacks not as important.

I subscribed to your content a long time ago, but one thing I wish you would do is show me how well it looks on a PC, because unlike your audience I actually use my panel as a monitor too, so I switch to PC and then to my streaming box to watch content. I tried out an LCD TCL and I did the simple white page black text test, and then black page with white text test and it was really bad, as in, it was unusable as a PC monitor. This is the main reason why I splurged and got the OLED, because the white page and black text actually look right, so maybe if you could spare like 5 mins for those two tests and also describe the maximum refresh rate it would be totally awesome!

@@birdtj82 LOL let's get this cleared up. I bought the Sony X90L from Best Buy and most importantly, Sony has hated me ever since I posted the X900H VRR fiasco three years ago. Sony has never EVER sent me a TV for review - I've had to buy them all myself. The only TVs ever sent to me for review have been TCL (but not recently, I've also had to buy the QM8 and R646 from Best Buy) and Hisense loaned me the U8K, U7K (both returned). Believe me when I say that I have been Sony's harshest critic (or did you miss my scathing review of the X95K last year, which I also bought) and this is the first time I've liked the entry level X90 model! As far as LG, they definitely don't like me and like Sony, they also do not send me any TVs for review - I've had to buy those too. Gotta disagree with you about the contrast - it's consistently good. Issues may stem from poor tone mapping which is software or bad DV processing which is also software, self-emissive delivers best in class contrast with QD-OLED taking a farther leap by offering better color luminance and color purity at wider viewing angles. Burn-in and ABL will always fall behind the flagship LCD TVs, as there are no perfect TVs but the absolute strength of OLED is definitely contrast (whether it's truly "infinite" is a different issue)

Samsung QN90C or Sony X93L. Which one would you recommend? Which has better upscaling?

I'm curious to see a Mini-LED tv with a 720p backlight Matrix, once the tech advances enough. I presume you could then have an 8K color filter on top to resolve the fine detail, but the HD backlight image wouldn't need to be as precise.

The issue is cost, it gets exponentially more expensive to up the dimming zone counts supposedly. I doubt we'll ever see an LCD TV with over 900,000 dimming zones tbh. It would either cost more than OLED by a wide margin, or by the time we'd get there, MicroLED TV's would probably be getting cost competitive and readily available, and superior to LCD in every way.

@@shugo7337 I'm saying it would be a cheaper option to manufacture than direct view MicroLED, especially for future 8K resolutions in TV's 65" or smaller, because they wouldn't have to get the individual LED's so small, but still have a near perceptible contrast. Having 900,000 individual LED's will be a lot easier to achieve than 33 million.

Yeah but the Sony is still $100 more than the TCL with inferior tech. I'll take the Mini LED TCL.

I'd really like to see a vid on "Best TV for Streaming Content". I, like a lot of people I think, watch only lower quality streaming content (youtube tv, youtube, amazon prime video, etc.).

Don't a lot of those apps still provide higher quality 4k content tho? I know Disney+ has a ton of Dolby Vision/Atmos and all that

@@Briballdo I admit I'm not an expert, but I know you have to pay more for 4k youtubetv and Prime Video offers HD (1080p I assume) at a lower price for rentals than UHD. Also, I don't think your stream will always be perfect quality depending on your connection, so many people rarely watch UHD/4k. If you are buying a TV at $1000 or under there's a very good chance you aren't watching top quality content.

@@therationalpiper7428 Yeah good point. It's hard to compare these TVs because in person they basically only play the demo videos at absolute max quality. And then reviewers will basically only focus on the super high quality content as well. I'm really curious how "normal" 1080p or 4k content from streaming apps does on these TVs

@@Briballdo Right, and I posted the comment here after seeing part of his long comparison of u8k, QM8, Q7 and U7k. I didn't even realize that the processing mattered so much more for the content that I usually watch.
