Clothes Are DESIGNED To Fit Terribly, Here's Why

I have a saying: store-bought clothes are made to fit everyone, which means they don't fit anyone. At all. Go grab a shirt from your closet and check the side seams-they're straight up and down. Your t-shirts, dress shirts, jeans, chinos, and polos don’t fit you perfectly, but it’s not your fault.
Manufacturers know we're all shaped differently, but it's cheaper to produce one size that fits everyone kinda okay than multiple versions for different body types.
Back in the 19th century, clothing was practically bespoke. If someone needed a new shirt, it was tailored to fit them perfectly. But with the rise of mass clothing production in the 20th century, consistent sizing got lost. There's no standardization, so a medium in one brand could be a large or extra-large in another.
That's why on this channel, we tailor everything in your closet! Literally E-V-E-R-Y-T-I-N-G.

I’m not a big guy and I had to deal with this issue my whole life then I was paying to have my clothes tailored which got very expensive plus I would have to wait for weeks to have it done then I started wat I your channel bought a sewing machine and started sewing at first not so good but now I fit my tee shirts dress shirts and jeans so much better and to think how terrible it was in the past, I still have some issues with the stitches and don’t really know how to fix them but I keep trying, but all in all thank you so much you really helped me feel more confident in my look, keep on bringing it 👍 !!!

So awesome to hear you're tailoring your own clothes man! And I totally get it, you end up looking back and being like "wow...how did I not do this before and just wear off the rack clothes?" As far as your stitches go what exactly are you having issues with? It might come down to something simple like having different brands of thread in your spool and bobbin. Its usually an easy fix so DM me on IG @stylishdtailors if you wanna get to the bottom of it!

This is so true. When I purchase a shirt almost without exception I START by taking the sides in 5 to 6 inches (EVERY TIME). At that point I can begin to fine tune the tailoring. Always enjoy your work. Keep it up.

Isn't that crazy! It's gonna throw you for a loop when you finally find that shirt where you don't need to do that haha!

You've cost me a lot of money... But then... When it all works out, I would say, you've saved me about four times as much as I've spent, simply because me and my wife are redoing 50 years of style changes we didn't like to begin with... We never fail to catch one of your teaching videos... Enjoy the 4th...

Lol here I am emptying your wallet! But you're right, the more money you save the more money you spend because you end up buying a whole bunch of clothes to tailor. The struggle is real my friend I get it! And happy 4th to you as well!

I've heard folks say that before and even during the industrial revolution, people often wore undershirts, shifts, and things like that to protect those nice bespoke clothes from sweat and make them last longer. When you're tailoring a shirt, is there anything that you'd do differently depending on whether you're gonna layer underneath it?
@StylishDTailors
@StylishDTailors 26 күн бұрын
Yeah most definitely, if you plan on wearing an undershirt then when you're measuring and pinning your garment you can be a bit more conservative with how much you are removing. So basically don't make it as fitted as you think you should.

Can you make a quick video how to make the neck hole of a t shirt smaller?

I'm a gal that recently discovered your channel and can't wait to try your tips and tricks on some t-shirts I have--I hate the boxy cut of most t-shirts you find in the store, they're not flattering on anyone (unless you're Sponge Bob!). Your vidoes are fun and informative, I'm excited to try what I've learned in them and "remodel" my wardrobe!

Would love to see a tutorial on how to tighten the neck on a T-shirt. I can take in the sides on an XXL to fit my arms and chest but the neck needs tightening.

Honestly it isn't worth it. I have a rule of thumb where I only recommend sizing down by 1-2 sizes max. Making the collar smaller is more work than it's worth really.

Interesting dude, I didn’t know this. It does make total sense. I started tailoring my first shirt by following your instructions and it took me over two hours just to get the pins in correctly. When you say it takes 20 minutes, that’s for someone with experience like yourself. Not a complete newbie like me. The first time I put the pins in I didn’t put them back through the fabrics so when I stood up half of them just fell on the ground. It took me 10 times replacing the pins before I got the fit correct and even now I’d like to adjust it. My friend told me that it’s easier just to make something from scratch. Idk. Anyways cool video

Making something from scratch requires a pattern. It's definitely NOT easier than making a few alterations.
@StylishDTailors
@StylishDTailors 29 күн бұрын
Oh man I'm sorry you had that experience with your pins! You gave me a good idea to make a video on how to use them properly though. It's REALLY easy to do but I don't think I've been explaining the process properly enough. If you do it right the pins shouldn't fall out of your garment at all. And tailoring an already existing t-shirt is way easier than creating one from scratch. (to use an analogy I just used in a video I just filmed lol) it's kinda like having a kiln, clay, water, glaze and a table to make a clay pot. Sure, you can probably figure it out and make a decent enough clay pot right? Well what if someone handed you an already made pot that just needed the final coat of glaze sanded down a bit in a few spots. Which process is easier?
