I dig and store my ranunculus corms to protect them from freezing winter temperatures and too much moisture, but also, so that they’re protected from the squirrels and mice who will feast on my entire collection!

Thank you for this video. This is my third attempt at ranunculus. Last time I bought corms soaked them and potted them up right away. I believe most of them rotted as I am on a balcony so I don’t Think the squirrels get up here. (Now that I have written that, they may have.). This year I bought three started by the nursery and just starting to bloom on Easter weekend (which was the first weekend in April this year. They bloomed for quite some time. The foliage is completely dead on them and they are still in the ground. I could not find clear information on storage. This is perfect. I now know I may be able to keep them stored in my storage locker. I am in a flat, so cool places in my apartment are not available. The storage is in the basement. It may work. ❤

Thank you. Yes, I try to mention dates where they're applicable but dates are also dependant on the zone they're grown in, so need to be taken and applied to your area. I lifted and stored my ranunculus at the end of June this year but the important thing is to wait until they have stopped flowering and also to see that some of the foliage is going brown. I will make a note to mention my dates in future videos. Thanks for your feedback, I really appreciate it.

Hey Annette. Well here in the sweltering hot humid SE USA, I was blessed with 1 red ranunculus to bloom. Considering we had a long cool spring which is rare, I will plant again but earlier. February maybe. What have the average Hi/low temps been there in Buckingshire lately? And what is "extremely hot" temps for your area? Just curious. Lol. We just came out of extreme heat advisory ranging in the 100° s, with pavement temps 139™F, 😳🥵 thankfully back in High 80°s F and partly cloudy scattered showers days. I always talk too much, Annette, so you never bother me going on...and you always crack me up. 😂 Anyways, be safe and stay cool. ❤️ Happy Days Gardening to my Sweet UK Friend. 🤗

Side note . This was my first attempt with Ranunculus. Thankfully, I only paid $2 for the 12, but I am considering investing in some quality corms. And putting them back in raised beds next year.

Hi Christina, well we had -7C this past spring, and that was considered VERY cold for us - it only lasted a day or 2. I'd say our normal low isn't below -2C/-3C but is often just plain 0. For highs, we tend to not get hotter than about 27C (your 80F) but have hit 35C last summer (I did not enjoy that). My ranunculus thrive at about 15C but if it gets much warmer (like 20C) then they start to fade and stop producing new blooms. The anemones too. It's so wonderful to chat to people from other parts of the world - this is what really inspires me and I just love it so much. Thank you for taking the time to reach out and comment. 💚

If I get any flower this year (it's my first year) I'm sending you photos! My hyacinths didn't do well, I bought some already grown and they just flopped over, leaves as well, I'm not sure what happened. How close do you think I should have planted my ranunculus' near each other? So they can blend? Also violets? Do you have violets? I can't remember if I asked you that? I have LOTS and I love them, I was curious if you had them in interesting colours? Like Opera or Sultan? Or Parchment? I can't get those here, and I would love to see them in full bloom, ohhh how lovely would that be? Also, I hope you don't mind all the questions? You're just so nice, and your garden is so beautiful, and you're so knowledgeable, I just love it ❤

Store bought greenhouse hyacinzhs tend to flop over. When you grow your own bulbs and the plants experience natural wind they will establish stronger stems from the beginning. Hi from a professional german gardener.

How fantastic - I'd love to see photos! I tend to plant my ranunculus quite closely - maybe 15cm apart but I think the correct spacing is about 20cm (9inches). I just prefer it when they're in a good grouping, and if some of the corms are small, then they will produce a smaller plant. I don't have any violets - I've never grown them but I think they are so pretty. And I LOVE having chats on here - thank you for your lovely compliments and for joining me 😁💚

@@cottoverdi I planted some in a pot to move later, i hope they'll survive the move, but the chickens just destroy my seedlings. So hopefully if they move well, and do well, some are in a quite windy spot, so it's not great, but I had extra. I'll definitely send them, I follow your page on instagram, I'll send you some of my violet babies, they're so pretty. It's always wonderful watching your videos and having a chat here 😀

Hello Annette. Please can I make use of your expert knowledge? Does the foliage not feed the corms for next year? It may be that you've allowed that to happen and a few weeks have gone by since the Ranunculus flowered. This is only my second year that I've grown them and I left mine in situ last year and only 50% came back. I assumed they had rotted but watching your video I think the squirrels enjoyed them. They're rascals at getting my crocus and tulips! I'll lift my corms in future. Thank you.
@cottoverdi
@cottoverdi Жыл бұрын
Hi Wendy, yes, you're absolutely right - I probably didn't;t make that clear - I've waited for the foliage and stems to yellow and fade before digging them up - that's why I did some last weekend and some the following week. To be honest, I don't think it's as imperative as it is with tulips. Yes, I fear it was probably the squirrels that got your corms - they have such a nose for the ranunculus and they're easy fodder because they don't have to dig very deep to get at them! Hopefully you'll have 100% success next year.
