CAN YOU ADD BOOST TO A JUNKYARD 4.3L V6? NA & BOOSTED RESULTS. REBUILT, JUNKYARD 4.3L V6, CAM & BOOST!! Can you really make power from a motor pulled from an Astro Van? IS The 4.3L REALLY 3/4 of a 350 V8? IF SO, can IT make good power, especially with boost from a TorqStorm CENTRIFUGAL Supercharger. With LS, Hemi & Coyote getting all the attention-it was time to test some of the other guys! CHECK OUT THE VIDEO ON THE BUILD UP, AND SUPERCHARGING OF THE LITTLE 4.3L V6 ASTRO VAN MOTOR!

Very true. Going on 12 years.. I’ve raced everybody willing to run off red lights. Hammered through swamps in 4 low. Gooning down dirt roads like I’m Ken block. And even jumped it like the duke boys. The 4.3 is an absolute STUD. Little gutless. Just enough oomph to have fun..but a STUD. General maintenance and a couple fuel pumps is all it’s asked for. Creeping up on 300k miles and it’s just happy as can be.

@murdyg7382 I had one in a boat. Broke a belt and overheated it till it seized. Replaced the belt and rode it like that the rest of the summer. When I pulled it apart in the fall, it had 2 blown head gaskets and there was a spark plug tip bouncing around in one cylinder. Thing just wouldn't give up.

This is fact I only just have my license. 16/17 years old growing up in Newfoundland my father had a 95. What a 4.3 and a 1/2 ton he used it as a worktruck. He was a mechanic welder. We hauled wood with it, but when I got my hands-on it. I was literally just hammer on it and hammer on it and hammer on it. Laid rubber everywhere. Yes, we did lose a transmission, but Hey, it was still going at over 500000 km before he sold it. That engine is a representation of what GM could do.

Ran into this video again, and still impressed. 😂. Stock powdered metal rods, stock cast pistons- most likely with factory ring gaps, stock heads, and stock exhaust manifolds. Throw a moderate cam into the mix, a generic centrifugal compressor, and no intercooling, and it lays down comparable power to the Ford Raptor’s Ecoboost... with only one camshaft, pushrods, and a carburetor too. 🧂🧂🧂

I love the 4.3L engine, it's a little workhorse! I have a '95 Chevy 1500 single cab w/ a 4.3L. I use it all the time towing vehicles with a metal car hauler between Texas and Missouri. Does great going up them steep hills with the a/c and cruise control on. Vehicle never strains and never slows down with cruise control on. I have two fairly low mileage stock turbos off of two different Subarus(Sti) that I been waiting to use on the 4.3L. Guess it's the perfect time to do it, since time is all I got now lol. I actually tuned one on a chassis dyno back in 2014. It was in an O3 S10 with a 5-speed and factory port injection. Mods were: cam, long tubes and a centrifugal supercharger on 10 PSI. It made 350 hp at the wheels on a mustang dyno. Factoring in a 15% driveline loss that puts crank power at about 410. Since you run yours without accessories, made 3 more psi, ETC, that roughly puts them on the same plane.

It made 276hp & 306lb-ft of torque thru stock n/a manifolds and Y-pipe with an untuned 850cfm carb sitting a top 3 inches of carb spacers (to get the carb linkage over the fuel rails) while running 91 octane from the mom & pop gas station from down the street. It was built to handle 30psi AND a 100 shot of nitrous. Currently I'm running the stock turbo & boost (14.7psi) as I'm sure the stock 700R4 won't handle the 1st AWD boost launch I do but I can't wait to stick a bigger turbo on & turn up the boost once I finish the 4L80E swap.

The magnum 5.9 is easily the best bang for your buck as a direct swap for any mopar that came before it. I import them to Australia coz it's still better value than reconditioning a 40yr old LA360. The disrespect they get is huge. I've had people literally tell me it's not even possible to make 400hp from a 5.9. Also they make pushrod oiled shaft mounted rocker arms to allow a retrofit of LA style cylinder heads onto a magnum short motor now, so the "bad flowing magnum heads" is no longer such a big deal breaker for high hp builds.

I think these 4.3l were very underated throughout the 90s. My dad loves Astro vans cause it was rwd, could tow our boat, and didn't get 12 mpgs like the 350. These things could run forever although some heads had small oil drain holes back to the sump so they could clog and keep all 4 quarts of oil in the head... I would love to see some more testing on this motor and other gm engines like the 3.8l and their ecotec motors or even the atlas motors like the 4.2 i6 or even the i5 and i4 variants, although there are less supporting mods for those.

Although there's a LOT of engines that could be suggested for such a series, I think the AMC/Jeep 4.0l is a no brainer. Bulletproof factory stock(well, sorta... I have cracked a piston in an early-2000s one with over 150,000 miles, they did have a tendency towards that for a few years...), there are actually quite a few out there making power thanks to the popularity of Jeeps in the desert community, especially thanks to the adoption of the JeepSpeed classes. A number of people have strapped turbos to them and made big power with some work, the 4.7l stroker kits are relatively common too. The various factory heads can be swapped for gains, like PI 4.6 heads or Vortech SBC heads. Edelbrock and I believe a few others have cylinder heads, some intakes out there, headers aren't very hard to find, they have pretty decent support as far as niche engines are concerned, I would almost look at it as the Pontiac 455 of 6 cylinders. Also, I'm REALLY curious about what a Subaru flat-6 is capable of, what one can take. The low CoG, light weight, and 6 cylinder displacement have always made those really interesting too me, with a turbo and some work seems like they would make a killer platform for anything that doesn't need more than, say, 650HP, and can contain the dimensions of a flat-6. Would REALLY like to build a tube buggy with one of those, mid-engine... ...since we're day dreaming, let's say it's on 9"-based 10" gear diffs w/ portal boxes at each corner, sitting on 37s to keep things as low as possible with portals... ...anyway...

They have a really long intake runner in the head and its very restrictive and the exhaust side is very short and not so bad but needs work. I really wanted to turbo it but when i was looking into it i could not find anyone that could tune it, so i didnt get to much further ,maybe now there is someone. i could of did standalone but i wanted it all stock ecm so everything would function normally , also the 4.7 H.O. has about 10.2 comp ratio and the non H.O. has 9.5 but the H.O. has about 16 more degrees of duration and about .020 more lift than non H.O. I still have all my research on doing the twin turbo's for the 4.7l but the jeep GC platform has like no room for that kinda stuff, the pick -up would be better suited for room for twins of a decent single.

@@chrisdeez2176 I'm sure you can make them pretty peppy but do that work to a 318 or a 360 any you'll run rings around a 4.7 all day. Ive never personally messed with the high outputs so I couldn't tell you but I do know the non HOs don't have forged rods and pistons. They're not terrible engines but I don't know why anyone would ever want to build one. I built a $800 355 for my k10 that makes more power than a "High Output" 4.7 does. I know there's an entire liter of displacement difference but my block is a 1968 casting with 1972 993 heads and an RV cam with some .030 over flat tops that came out of a 350 irrigation motor that ran on natural gas... stock crank, rods intake, and carb. This little Chevy V6 reminds me of a friends engine. About 8 yrs ago I was at WyoTech in Laramie, Wyoming completing the motor sports chassis fab class and a neighbor of mine had a late 80’s square body S-10 with V6 in it. Except, his V6 started its life as a forklift engine that was converted to propane injection by the forklift manufacturer. He blew his little I4 and him being a good ole boy, he found a broken down forklift and pulled its engine. He rebuilt the engine and converted it back to a gas burner, now the rest is what he told me about the engine. He put a thumper stage 3 cam (I remember he said 505 at 50) in the engine, mildly ported (I can only assume he gasket matched the heads to both manifolds) the cylinder heads, installed a RPM or air gap intake with a 650 or 850 Holley. This little engine that could sounded like a damn throaty SBC or a BBC with a wild cam. When riding in it he would jam the throttle and if the tires could grip with his cut out bed, lowered and c-notched frame with a GM 12-bolt rear with 4:11’s. That thing felt as if he hit the nitrous button or something, even though it didn’t actually have NOS installed. It pulled its ass off and it loved running north of 6,000 rpm all day, as long as the radiator didn’t start spitting in traffic. Yes he was that guy that did 0-90 between red lights!!!!! But, his ride was a working progress and it ran good with the parts he chose and put together. Before he graduated and went back to the farm (as he used to say) he completed a lot of fab work on his truck while and after completing shop competencies at WyoTech-Laramie Campus in the Motorsports chassis fab class. I still remember the little truck but, I be damned if I can’t remember the boys name. His ride was cool and it ran great for a previously junk engine that was propane injected out of a forklift!!!!

trdscfjc the issue with that though is there aren’t any aftermarket cams, or really anything aftermarket for that matter available for the atlas series engines. That’s why so few people mess with them

I remember someone on SupraForums swaping one into a MKIII supra Using an AR5 Transmission which is basically A toyota R Series Transmission with a GM bellhousing (R154 Is stock supra trans) those 5 speeds will handle about 700hp and high 600ftlbs of torque believe he ended up with about High 500 whp on moderate boost levels (12-15 psi)

I think motionautotv KZfaq is doing just that. this guy isn't doing anything new, he's just showing the old stuff they have done for magazines years ago.

That motor Jeff Smith wrote about had this same cam in it with extensive head porting, and less compression than a stock 4.3. It was also a pre balance shaft motor.

Your continuing the work and love of the odd stuff that I read about 30 years ago in "V-6 Performance" by Pat Ganahl. It was actually written in the early 80's when the 4.3L was just coming about, but guys like Grumpy Jenkins were already pushing 450HP from the small block V-6 just to see what it could take. I still pull that book out and look it over from time to time. I originally bought it to research a 60* V-6 engine build I was doing in high school, but was disappointed that the book was written before the advent of the TBI injection I had decided to run.....still a great read and a blast from the past!

I LOVE the 4.3l v6! I'm really impressed with what you did with the supercharger. On the subject of other overlooked motors, I have a copy of a junkyard gems article from Hotrod mag a few years back, where they put mustang 4v heads on a 4.6 modular v8 and tried a few different intake and carb options, and made like 700hp on I believe a stock bottom end. The ability to make respectable power like this from overlooked motors really makes this a fun hobby.

What about the Buick 3800. The m90 supercharged motors particularly are still being modified.

The M90 blower is in an of itself kind of a choke point. I'm sure those engines could pump out some impressive numbers if you swapped the M90 for a bigger blower, or a turbo.

How about testing on the Atlas inline 6 from the trailblazer. Would be fun to see how it responds to mods like turbo!
