Had the pleasure of working with the Brett that 390129 gets it's name from - was one of the nicest people I've ever met when working in this industry, and a touch of class for AWC to name a Pendo in his honour after his passing

Darent think how many hours I’ve sat in Carlisle station . Every Saturday as a kid I was down there, sat on a BRUTE taking down numbers. Was always locos sat in the sidings in front of the powerbox or against the back wall. Loads of freight back then. Stone from shap, steel coils from RavensCraig, , rails from BSC Workington , fuel tanks from Stanlow to dalston, local trip workings from the ammo dumps at eastriggs and longtown, All as good as gone now.

You ventured much further north for this video. Wonder if Leslie Gilpin was at the station as he films on quite a number of days for his channel. Good video Brian as always. Cheers Euan

The other day a avanti train eus-edb was terminated at Preston due to a track issue north of Carlisle, leaving many upset passengers . Why couldn't a thunderbird take the train from Carlisle to Newcastle and onto Edinburgh? Avanti we all know don't care but some poor passengers were having to get taxis from Preston onwards. It doesn't do the railways image much good.I am a railcard holder and love rail travel.

The Plessey viaduct at Cramlington, North of Newcastle is damaged, with one way running, so added traffic on the East Coast Mainline is not going to happen.

Great video Brian. It’s a wonder that you didn’t bump into Les Gilpin there who films regularly at Carlisle. As regards led flicker - have you tried changing the settings on your iPhone? Go to Settings >Camera >Record Video >Show PAL Formats and select any one of the 25fps options (1080p or 4K) for our 50Hz frequency - should eliminate the flickering.

Assuming this was Friday Euan, I was having a day off. On the face of it there seemed nothing unusual happening. Then I found out in the evening it was chaos with nothing going up the wcml north from Carlisle!

It's fascinating to see that goods train transporting all that timber. What would also be interesting is to see what happens to the train at its destination. Is there a spur directly taking the train into the lumber mill? I hope it's not necessary to first transfer the logs to lorries.

Sooooo...... you think 2 1/2 hours in a 155 to Glasgow is crap as a punter? You've not driven one I assume ? Then you'd know the poor sap in the cab has the worst seat in the house ! These things have no place on a civilised railway. We are very good in this country of making rail travel a morale-busting ,soul-destroying experience. Then again , let's not forget all the other 14x and 15x cabs. Those ironing board seat are something of a pandemic , these days, alas. They're spreading in Europe, too . But , my! How neatly pressed and trim- looking our arse cheeks will be !

Aye , the 156's , if not so much the best of the bunch , were maybe better described as the least offensive. As for 142's, I doubt anything in the bistory of mankind has spawned as many bad back claims ! The 153's , oddly , even though derived from redundant, trouble-prone 155 sets , were ever so slightly better with the ergonomics at the modded end, but not by much . Didn't do much for claustrophobia though.....When first built, you had the 'pleasure' of , if you positioned yourself just right , of being able to see the ballast on the left side of the desk knee-hole at floor level No doubt a feature you'd pay extra for on your Bentley ! Anyone who ever griped to me about 66 cabs got told they ain;t seen nuthin yet. Gotta love that weather-induced chaos, have you noticed the uncanny way that as soon as one little thing goes tits on the job, loads more follows as sure as eggs is eggs? Keep up the good work with the vlogs ,it's nice to see what's going on with things.

It's the "spitter" valve for the air brake system. When you compress air, some of the moisture in it condenses as a liquid. You really don't want liquids in your brake system, so there are valves at the lowest points in the system, where the water collects. The valve periodically opens and the air pressure blows the water out.

It is called a Spirax valve as @beeble2003 mentioned, its to bleed moisture out of the air system to avoid brake issues etc.

@@beeble2003 Don’t quote me, but I believe it was the name given to it by BR back when they built their own stock. I think it was first coined with the 37 or 47, but again im not sure. I think as you mentioned, now that building has been outsourced, various companies have different names/brands for it. It just stuck in my head when i was 5 ,and visited Laira HST depot in 1991 (which is literally in my back yard), an engineer told me when I questioned him. Dunno why it stuck with me 😂

Most places in the UK replant. We're a small country, so if we chop trees down without replacing them, we'll quickly run out. It's basically just a form of farming.
