A group of men who devoted their lives to hunting powerful storms died in the middle of the chase.
Tim Samaras, his son Paul Samaras and Carl Young were killed Friday while following a tornado in El Reno, Oklahoma, relatives told CNN on Sunday. Their work tracking tornadoes was featured on the former Discovery Channel show "Storm Chasers."
They were among at least nine people that state officials reported killed in storms that struck Oklahoma on Friday night. On Sunday, Oklahoma City Fire Department officials told CNN that searchers had found the bodies of as many as five additional victims, but state officials could not be immediately reached to confirm whether the statewide death toll had increased.
At the intersection where authorities said the three storm chasers were killed, crews hauled away a mangled white truck Sunday that had been crushed like a tin can. The metal frame of their storm-chasing vehicle was twisted almost beyond recognition. The windows had been smashed to bits.
Canadian County Undersheriff Chris West confirmed that three storm chasers had been killed but declined to provide additional details about the circumstances of their deaths.

Tim Samaras was not a "citizen, thrill seeker looking to sell photos and videos" as stated by the anchor in this video. He (along with Carl Young) was a scientist and an engineer doing extremely important research and collecting valuable data in order to better forcast tornadoes and thus save lives. To make it sound like he was just some cowboy out trying to get his kicks and make a quick buck is very irresponsible and just plain sad.

ImpossibRu My point was.....why even have the debate? If someone wants to go out and chase a tornado....they have every right. The government, the news, or anyone else doesn't have any business trying to stop them. When a couple of more people die this way....there will be a push to make tornado chasing illegal.

You're absolutely right, people have every right to chase. I could see if someone is taking small children along for the ride and putting them in harms way, but consenting adults have every right. That said, Tim Samaras absolutely WAS NOT an ameture thrill seeker and I think referring to him that way is insulting to him and the other scientists working in the field.

Just chasing a tornado is putting oneself in danger. Thing is, no matter how much data is collected, human beings will never conquer Mother Nature. Let El Reno be a lesson of that.

So you're saying just stop trying to study our environment and learning about the world we live in? Should we not report about wars either??? I understand the mother nature is a beast and the more us humans fuck it up... the crazier and more unpredictable it will get... but we need to also understand what the exact formula is that causes these tornadoes so we can give an earlier warning to people in the area of the storm...

Unfortunately, this tornado was so big and so powerful that the meteorologists on the television stations were saying that not even the inner rooms of their homes were going to be enough to save lives. Ultimately, the only people who were truly safe during this storm were those who had an underground storm shelter.

I didn't know or even meet Tim Samaras. I believe I have seen about every bit of work he had televised or put on KZfaq. I could see the passion he had for the science, and his awe of the power he studied. I could also see the compassion he had for his team and his colleagues, and the victims of tornadoes. I remember how the snobby academics would snub Sean Casey and Tim always had a smile and a hug for him. I could just tell he was a good man. Storm on Tim, Paul, Carl.

Sounds like the guy at the end was saying the safest place to be normally was a death trap in this storm. I could be wrong but it sounded like he said to additional tornadoes flanked the normally safe viewing angle for the original twisted. I watched a bunch of different chaser's footage and many of the tapes looked very scary. Multiple groups seemed to be moving seemingly safe distances away only to have another vortex come out of nowhere from the south to southeast side of their positions.

Mr. Samaras was a reality tv star. When his show was cancelled on Discovery Channel, he took pictures to sell to National Geographic. He attempted to do experiments in an effort to someday better understand tornadoes which he hoped would increase warning times. He is credited with recording a record drop in pressure. I can respect his efforts, but so far, he hasn't saved anyone or been credited with increased warning times and now his son and buddy are dead.

News reports like this disgust me, what they don't seem to understand is the people living in the paths of these storms depend on those storm chasers and specifically the news storm chasers to let us know where they are and if it is coming in our direction so we can seek shelter. Warning times have gone from less than 3 minutes for the 1999 tornado to over 30 minutes today, because of the excellent reporting and radar we have now. They have saved many lives!!!

Even the lady from Politico, who isn't a meteorologist, but has covered the aftermath, talks about the important public service provided, and how she spoke with a man who said their coverage saved his life on May 3, 2001. She likened chasing to working in a war zone, which is incredibly accurate, and these storms are even less predictable. I would say that while the question was posed about profiting from all this, even the anchor reminds viewers that these guys barely get by, unselfishly.

It is so sad, that TWISTEX researchers Tim Samaras, His son Paul and his best friend/storm chasing partner Carl Young took nearly every precaution to keep safe and they were ultimately caught off guard by the tornado's sudden turn in direction and the traffic jam of storm chasers that prevented them from getting away. Storm Chasing should not be done by thrill seekers, but professionals only! If you want to go and storm chase just for the thrill of it, then go on a tour led by experienced storm chasers, do not go chasing yourself, let this tragedy be a warning to all future thrill seekers, If it is dangerous for professional storm chasers, what do you think it will be for an amateur storm chasers who may or may not completely understand the science behind tornadoes. The only car that is meant to be driven into tornadoes is the TVN Dominator, and even then it is not 100 percent certain that something can go wrong. If you see a tornado and it is close, or even coming close to you get to a shelter, if you are in a car, go to a ditch, DO NOT SEEK SHELTER UNDER AN OVERPASS, THE WIND WILL GET FUNNELED DOWN AND ACCELERATE TO STRONGER SPEEDS, THIS MAY CAUSE THE PERSON IN THE OVERPASS TO EITHER GET SUCKED OUT AND INTO THE TORNADO OR HIT BY DEBRIS THAT IS ACCELERATED BY THE WINDS WHICH MAY BE IN EXCESS OF 200 MPH! We don't need people racing around to spot or track a storm, the NWS recommends against it. Super Doppler does that and can identify rotation. It's getting ridiculous how many storm chasers are out there now. They almost kill each other getting away from the storm. It's time these guys step back and rethink what the hell they're actually accomplishing. Three dead and a few very near death occurrences in the same weekend? I think we need more Joshua Wurmans and less of the guys competing to see how ridiculously close they can get to the tornadoes and to get the glory shots. Just my opinion.

@Lloyd Christmas regardless they died doing what they loved which was storm chasing. You're a disrespectful idiot who doesn't know the first thing about storm chasing or how dangerous it really is and it's something I want to do while also acknowledging the dangers associated with the profession. Small price to pay to save people from an almost two mile wide tornado who don't deserve even being told where it is

this whole storm chaser thing is getting out of hand. there is no reason to get that close to a tornado. spotters do just that, they spot from a safe distance and report in order to warn people. but these guys seem to be skirting the edge between science and thrill seeking. it's just too dangerous... why would you do that if you have a wife, kids, ?!?!?!

Very true, people won't believe this though because Mr. Samaras was their reality tv star. They think a tornado has to be spotted by a chaser for the sirens to go off, or for local news to air the NWS warnings. In reality, using this radar is how he put himself and his passengers in the line of fire. How ironic.

i know it costs a ungodly amount, but you should only get close to a tornado to film it in a vehicle like the TIV

Tim Crowder It's not like he strapped his son to a tree in the projected path. Many families share passions of careers. Look at the Deadliest catch and the King Crab Fisherman or families that have multiple generations of police or firemen in the lineage. It was a TRAGIC ACCIDENT. The same thing that can happen to anyone in a storm or in dealing with mother nature. His degree or experience or profession does NOT make him any less at risk for MOTHER NATURE being in control.

uh thats not who died. this was a unprotected car. and btw they have things on a vehicle they forces the vehicle to stay in the ground and would require 45,000 pounds of force to bring it up.

These storm chasers have taught us all about the dangers of tornadoes and why we should listen to the warnings. They have important jobs. In Ohio where I am from, the state government has people dedicated to being storm chasers and will ask for them to go out and look at the weather. They sometimes are the eyes for emergency services. They have to take classes for storm chasing. Emergency services can't be everywhere, so storm chasers licensed storm chasers report severe weather.

It hasn't increased warning times? Are you nuts? Confirmed: you don't have the slightest clue what you're talking about.
