As others said, most of the liquidators, including the ones on the roof, either didn't die or if they eventually got sick it was many years later. At this time there were some protective measures taken such as time spent in the highly radioactive places. There were some who suffered from acute radiation sickness but generally got better, some remained with frail health. There's a couple of documentaries where they have actual footage of the roof cleanup, the prep for it, it's been recreated on the show almost identically, very interesting, even the speech. They couldn't show much of the other measures taken such as removing the top layers of soil and burrying them under clean layers that were underneath, spraying a whole lot of the surfaces in the area, the trees, to keep the contaminated dust and soil from being carried up and away by wind and such

"There was one standout star of Chernobyl‘s depressing fourth episode, and it wasn’t any of the human characters. It was an adorable little robot by the name of Joker. In the latest episode of The Chernobyl Podcast, series creator Craig Mazin and podcast host Peter Sagal broke down the real-life story of the lunar and police robots that were used to clean up radioactive waste after the disaster. After the Chernobyl 4 reactor exploded, it left a large amount of debris on the surrounding roofs. This included huge chunks of radioactive graphite. Officials realized that they could throw the graphite back into the reactor to build a sort of Sarcophagus over the reactor, encasing the radiation. But there was just one problem. It wasn’t safe for any human to go onto the highly radioactive roof. “Exposure to radiation is cumulative, and it doesn’t go away,” Mazin explained on the podcast. “That place would … kill you in a minute and a half.” The real solution the Soviet Union came up with was to use Russian lunar landers, called Lunokhod, and a borrowed police robot. Joker was one of the latter robots. It was originally from West Germany, and just like “The Happiness of All Mankind” shows, it was sent to the rooftop to remove the rubble. Two men even risked their lives moving graphite to make sure Joker could move freely on the roof. And yet the robot supposedly designed for these types of missions almost immediately died of radiation exposure. “The Soviets - and this is mind-blowing to me - they refused to tell anyone how bad the situation was. Even then, months later, after the world knew about Chernobyl and knew what it meant they were still soft-pedaling just how bad it was to the point where they refused to tell the West Germans how much radiation was on that roof,” Mazin said. “It was 600 percent or 700 percent more than it could handle. And what blows my mind is the Soviet power system thought that was OK. Why not? Let’s just see. It’s the same kind of attitude that leads to Chernobyl in the first place.” Most of the robots used seen in Episode 4 are CGI. However, the crew actually built a version of Joker for this episode. As for the real Joker, it’s still around. There are pictures of the robot online and it can be found in a garbage heap in the radiation zone. It’s still very dangerous and very radioactive. The other depressing addition to this subplot was also true. After Joker and its peers largely failed, the Soviet Union did send up groups of soldiers to remove the debris. They were referred to as “biorobots,” and as seen in the episode they could only be exposed to the radiation for 90 seconds at a time. Any longer than that and they would risk death. As Mazin reveals, roughly 3,000 men completed this mission, all donned in homemade armor. Naturally the Soviet Union refused to properly equip these men who were risking their lives. As is always the case with this show, Chernobyl may seem grim, but the reality was worse. So, so much worse." The radiation did kill and shorten the lives of many, but so many reactors seem to be overestimating the damage. The people on the roof definitely didn’t get nothing, but the talked earlier about how long they can be exposed and what it would do. Thy said 2 minutes cuts life expectancy in half, 3 kills in months. They deliberately sent each person for 1.5 mins

Most of those people would be pretty much alright (I mean they definitely had like 4 times higher cancer chances, but none had recieved a radiation sickness) as they were only affected by gamma radiation at the limited time while having grear to protect them from the alpha and beta particles. Problem is that some of soldiers didn't took that to serious by extending their sorties or even going for the several in a row (and even not every of that received severe effects for the health). Same as when some people were threatened by armed guards in previous episodes - that's just a plain bullshit. There are a lot of small misconceptions caused by lack of cultural knowledge by authors caused some absurd scenes. E.g. they didn't explained why there is a vodka, making viewers to get back for ever-drinking Russians stereotype (and actually it was a myth that alcohol helps to clean radionuclides from the body, so soldiers were allowed to drink even there was a prohibition those years) or a doctor treating burns with milk (while they actually gave firemen milk to DRINK as there were also a myth milk can help with chemical poisoning which they believed they had). And so on...

You made it through what many consider to be the most emotionally difficult episode. My condolences for the loss of your cat which I'm sure made this an even more difficult episode to watch for you. The next episode I believe will be very educational for you and not so hard hitting. Would you consider reacting to the Firefly / Serenity series? I'm certain you ladies would enjoy it. Arguably one of Joss Whedon's finest work. Much less dark and has a lot of humor, it is a space western classic with a huge cult following. Special effects are dated, but that does not take away from the quality of the show.

Google got caught collecting data on kids and were fined for it; so to cover their butts legally in the future they are throwing creators under the bus even though its not creators collecting the data. So this is something you are going to have to deal with in your less "adult" videos as well.

The Liquidators on the roof are not necessarily going to die, and not over the next ten years as would be expected for Rads on the roof. yes they are getting Radioactive Exposure, and yes some of them might get enough to get radiation sickness, but this is several months after the incident, so the most radioactive particles have undergone several half lives, meaning hardly any of that nuclide are still in existence(highly radioactive nuclides underoes one of several forms of decay, turning it into a different and more stable nuclide of the same or a different(usually lower in table of elements) element. At that point in the incident they are no longer dealing with short lived fission products(the kind that killed Akimov and the other Reactor operators), and they are now dealing with long lived fission products that are a danger if ingested or inhaled. So accidently cutting his boot on the damaged boot is not going to automatically kill the Liquidator.

It is not really possible to harden or shield electronics enough to protect against radiation on that level at a reasonable weight, it would require several inches of lead around every electronic component in the robot to keep those level of Gamma and Neutron radiation at bay.

I wonder how many people were sad at the cows and the dogs dying (and rightfully so) but do not realize that worse happens to the animals on their plates.

The idea that the baby absorbed the radiation, thus saving the mother, is not scientifically accurate. What made the difference between the baby and the mother is the baby's cells were actively dividing. That makes them more susceptible to damage from radiation. The mother's cells mostly were no longer dividing, so she was less susceptible.
