Carlton Barrett is mostly remembered as the drummer of Bob Marley and the Wailers. But in reality his role in reggae culture and history is immense. He was one of the architects of the genre as we know it today and the backbone of the Tuff Gong's musical machine

The Barett brothers are the foundation of Bob Marley's music and they don't receive just credit. Damn shame 3 murderers run free while this man, Mr. Carlton isuppose to be alive right now.

He was one of those musicians that can convince a music snob that reggae contains greatness. Like Dean Frasier, Burning Spear, Augustus Pablo, Ernest Ranglin, etc..

Yes thank you for taking my video recommendation!! As a predominantly reggae drummer Carly is easily my biggest influence… the fact that he can play something different nearly every measure (particularly in the Wailers first 2 island albums) while still maintaining a solid rhythm and groove is unlike anyone else to ever play the instrument. I’m so thankful for his great teachings.

What about Tinleg? I think his syncopation between snare and kick is even better than Carly. Most people confuse Tinleg's songs with Carly because Pablo put Barrett on the liner notes of the album. King Tubby Meets Rockers uptown is mostly Tinleg. The this is Augustus Pablo album is pretty much all Tinleg except Pablo In Dub, I think that may be Barrett. Carley had the hi hat mastered though. One of the only drummers of any style to make up his own hi hat patterns.

If you listen to the babylon by bus album you will hear why you cannot follow him ,cause he surprises constantly with certain hihat and rimshot patterns constantly changing without loosing the groove.This man was a genius and belongs in the top 5 of best drummers ever.

Carlton Barrett's widow, Albertine Barrett, was subsequently jailed on 18 October 1991, after being convicted of conspiracy to commit murder. Sentenced with her were taxi driver Glenroy Carter, 39, her reputed lover, and Junior "Bang" Neil, 39, a mason, who the prosecution alleged was responsible for the actual shooting

...his work on the Augustus Pablo's cut/album "King Tubby Meets Rockers Uptown" has got to be one of the finest examples of reggae drumming ever recorded...probably Carlton's career masterpiece. That unbelievable remix of Carlton's drum work found on Jacob Miller/Augustus Pablo's "Baby I Love You So" by King Tubby ("King Tubby Meets Rockers Uptown") is why King Tubby is considered one of the baddest/most influential engineers in the history of music-regardless of genre...

@@OneDrop504 Actually I heard that claim from Addis Pablo, son of Augustus Pablo. However, that contradicts every discography/sessionography I've ever read. Until somebody can conclusively prove otherwise, I gotta give credit to Carlton. The cat who can shed light on this would be guitarist Chinna Smith who was on the session. I'll reach out online and see if he'll set the record straight as to who was on drums...
@OneDrop504

@@rjlohr Addis would say that because Pablo or Chinna told him. Addis plays tributes to his dad with Chinna. I correspond with someone who opened for Pablo, and he said Pablo said the same thing, that a LOT of those tracks were Tinleg. Check out my videos. I've been studying those two drummers for years. I can tell because there is a distinct difference. Carlton's thing was incorporating complicated hi hat patterns into his bass and snare syncopation. Tinleg was pretty straight ahead on the hi hat most of the time or he would do straight triplets. but his syncopation between bass and snare was unparalleled. Tinleg's open hats are out of left field, and his fills are different. Also, WAY more kick drum use with Tinleg. Listen to Baby I Love You So then listen to Auntie Lu Lu by Junior Byles. Some of the same fills in both songs, and that's Tinleg on Auntie LuLu. Also, check the credits for Who Say Jah No Dread by Jacob Miller, which is all the same tracks from King Tubby Meets the Rockers Uptown, they credit Tinleg and Barrett. Barrett did play Stop Them Jah and another one or two, but the rest is Tinleg. The Barretts were known as Marley's rhythm section and he was becoming an international star at that time. It was better for Pablo to credit them for sales.

@@OneDrop504 you could very well be right. Thanks for the informed input...will check out the Junior Byles cut per your suggestion. I'm big on giving credit where credit is due, especially for drum work on that level. Addis told me that Familyman played bass on "Stop Them Jah" and that Robbie played bass on "Cassava Piece", "Baby I Love You So" and "King Tubby Meets Rockers Uptown". The credits on the album list both Familyman & Robbie...always nice to actually know who played on what cut...if Chinna gets back to me, I'll post his reply...
