Tolkien's experience in World War I as an officer and his top NCO is directly mirrored in the relationship of Frodo and Sam. It also is reflected in the Hobbits coming back changed by the events of the War to destroy the ring and Sauron. Changes that war makes cannot be explained by those participated to those who did not serve in combat.

The whole Han Solo arc thing is why I hate Disney Star Wars so much: he went through this brilliant development that ends in VI where he’s decided to accept the Rebels and fight for his friends rather than himself, and then come VII they threw it all away into the trash just so that they could bring back old Han Solo to copy IV...except the VII version of Han was even LESS developed than IV, because at least IV Han was competent at flying the Falcon and didn’t need a MaRey Sue to do everything for him! And even worse they kill him off at the end, dumping him in the garbage for good, like some worthless prop. Absolutely shameful.

I find all three of these archetypes to be so facanating and interesting, and by far my most favorite is probably "The Friend" with my most favorite example from that being Samwise from The Lord of The Rings. if anything sam is MORE competant than frodo hes braver, activly fights (and wins some of those) right from the start (he stands up to the ringwraiths at weathertop while frodo just cowers and hes the one to acost aragon at bree) hes the only character in the entire series that is able to WILLINGLY give up the ring and hes the one that actualy carries the ring to mount doom, frodo being unable to continue sam is far more competant than frodo
@buckchoi
@buckchoi 5 жыл бұрын
am I misremembering or does Frodo not, against great sort of oppressive force, stab the ringwraith's foot at weathertop? I honestly can't remember Sam, but maybe that's movie stuff. I just looked it up... FotR 'A Knife in the Dark' "Terror overcame Pippin and Merry, and they threw themselves flat on the ground. Sam shrank to Frodo's side. Frodo was hardly less terrified than his companions; he was quaking as if he was bitter cold, but ... ... 'He [Witchking]] sprang forward and bore down on Frodo. At that moment Frodo threw himself forward on the ground, and he heard himself crying aloud: O Elbereth! Gilthoniel! At the same time he struck at the feet of his enemy. A shrill cry rang out in the night; and he felt a pain like a dart of poisoned ice pierce his left shoulder.' The old forest or barrow downs, might say something one way or another but here at least Sam is unproven you could say. But you have a point with the rest! In fact I think Merry and Pippin also show something of a more worldly competence in dealing with the scourging of the shire iirc, while Frodo possesses something of a higher spiritual understanding (which, now that I think of it, seems to make such characters fit oddly in the world, like kooky mentors).

Frodo didn't "just cower" on Weathertop, he was the only one that could actually see the wraits for that they really were so of course their affect on him was amplified as compared to the others simply seeing them as the black riders. He did also attack the ringwraiths on Weathertop out of desperation and ended up being stabbed. Sam took a set against Aragorn in Bree simply because he was extremely protective but Frodo spoke to him one on one after the fall off the table in the common room, he didnt' cower away from him. As for giving up the ring willingly Sam was only able to do it because he held for a very short amount of time. Bilbo had it for decades and he was able to give it up in the end too, so of course Sam could give it up after holding onto it for so little time. When it comes to Sam carrying the ring up the mountain, that's also a big oversimplification. Frodo had carried the ring all the way through Middle-Earth, and then right through Mordor. He had to bear the full brunt of all the negative affects that the ring could exert on him, which grew stronger and stronger all the time as he got closer to the heart of Sourons stronghold. Of course he was more physically worn down than Sam, the ring was actively working against his will every step of the way. Besides which, Frodo did actually complete the last part of the trip himself, after he ran ahead and inside Mt Doom while Sam was dealing with Gollum.

I would say that the goody two shoes is the more formidable writing challenge because he/she is the one more likely to run the Mary Sue gauntlet and/or come off as two dimensional whereas the other two are more likely to have interesting flaws and dynamics. Hermione is definitely knocking at the door given how she is stated to be much plainer than Emma Watson at yet is chased after by an international Quidditch player and rarely fails at anything she does, but there are many more. I find this to be a common trope in JRPGs and anime/manga.

I wouldn’t say Hermione is a Mary Sue, because Harry and Ron still outshine her in many regards. The most obvious one being Quiddich, but also there’s the fact that Hermione is not as brave as Harry or Ron and is often the one who’s easiest to take out (like the basilisk did for example). She’s more of a support to help Harry and Ron, rather than a hero.

@@TheAutistWhisperer I would say that Yuna from Final Fantasy X (which is easily one of the most successful JRPGs of all time) is a classic borderline Mary Sue of the Goody Two Shoes type. She is beautiful, always thinks of others before herself, loved by everyone she meets with the exception of a single jealous bitch, all of the male leads want to be her husband or protector, she is by far the most powerful character in the game, and her only real flaw is that she cares too much. And I would argue that this is even worse come the sequel as anyone of any importance at all hang off her every word, she is bravely and selflessly fighting for love and the future of the world, she's unbelievably sexy with a huge cleavage window and hotpants and yet is still very innocent about it, she has friends everywhere, the secondary villain is yet another jealous bitch and the main is only after her because she resembles his girlfriend, her Blitzball skills after only two years of practice rival that of Tidus, Wakka and Jecht who have been playing their whole lives, and she gets her man at the end. I recently learned to my surprise that the terms "antagonist" and "protagonist" are apparently false friends to the same terms in Slovene, which is why James Bond being a protagonist is weird to me. By Slovene definition, a protagonist is the literary person with a certain plan in mind, and the antagonist is the one trying to foil the plan. By this logic, James Bond is mostly an antagonist by throwing wrenches into the cogs of evildoers (but I believe there are times when he is a protagonist). And Voldemort's goal is to kill Harry, while everyone is working against that plan, making him a protagonist, while Harry, Albus, ... are all antagonists. To me, it would make sense to not automatically equate "protagonist" with "hero". Harry is definitely still a hero in this story from our perspective, but not from the perspective of people who root for Voldemort. I would argue that "hero" is a more subjective term, while "protagonist" is objective. I wonder if you could make a video if this seems to you a topic with discussive potential.

@@TheAutistWhisperer No, he is definitely a hero, because all the shit he does is usually in service of preventing worse shit (and of course in service of awesome explosions and chase scenes). He is not, however, the guy with the plan. His plan is to break someone else's plan. That's reactionary, antagonistic. The same goes for avatar Aang. His plan it to fuck up someone else's plan. This then goes even further with Azula; her plan is to fuck up his plan about fucking up her dad's plan. Double antagonist?

I don't know if you've read Ian Fleming's books or just seen the films, but it is made very clear there that Bond is nothing more than an assassin. M. points him at someone and Bond goes off to pull the trigger. In fact the way that one earns a 00 number is to kill a man whilst on a mission. Things definitely got muddier in the films as it very much depends on the Bond. Even then the friendliest Bond of the lot Roger Moore got off to a very infamous start in just how eager he was to be rude and violent to the innocent in his first two films. Bond fits my definition of an anti-hero far more than a straight hero.

My secondary characters all contrast with the protagonist's world-weary outlook, but they aren't really his friends and they don't stick around for the whole story. His neighbor is pretentious and incompetent while he's more humble and does his job, his old friend from high school is more energetic than he is. His sidekick isn't too interested in reality, and the insanity there causes some strange adventures. It's good to know more about the archetypes for consideration in future stories!

Quirky sidekicks always makes me think of JRPGs and certain mangas - a good foil for a protagonist that is very literal or quite grim. I think of Guts and Puck the Fairy from Berserk, or Vampire Hunter D and the symbiotic creature that lives in his hand. They constantly play humorous foil to the "incredibly dark and grim, world-weary, beaten, and unshakably stoic" protagonist.

@@DVSPress That's really interesting; I will have to look at some JRPGs and mangas to see that pattern. They'd be seeing each other pretty regularly anyways, and keeping them separated would add more tension in the "rebel vs stickler" conflict. Something I'd like to do is have the first person perspective alternate between the two main character. Each would get a full chapter, but would this still be considered head-hopping?

First, thank you! This video got me thinking in different directions about something that seems so obvious and in your face. I have a theory based on your video about the character Nux from Mad Max: Fury Road. I would define Nux and the other War Boys as the ultimate Goody Two-Shoes characters. They obey the rules without question and believe absolutely in the authority above them. The rescued women to varying degrees are all bad boy characters, led by the ultimate badass bad boy, Furiosa! However, since all of them are driven by both hope and a rejection of the status quo, they are not nihilistic enough to really be bad boys. That role is played to perfection by Max. The effect that the bad boy characters have on Nux is that he ultimately becomes as much of a rebel as they are. Max becomes a little less nihilistic and the rebels become the authority. What do you guys think?

Sam is arguably more important than Frodo starting when Frodo is captured by the orcs of Cirith Ungol, when Sam takes and uses the Ring to rescue Frodo and kills that Orc to save him. Then Sam gives back the Ring, and Frodo is basically a cripple for the vast majority of their journey through Mordor. Sam is making ALL the decisions, since Frodos mind(and body) are overthrown(by the Ring and by his wounds, both the stab from the witch king on weathertop, and Shelobs poison sting, and the hard and long journey). The Journey through Mordor is one of my favorite sequences in the book. Sam really does step up, and show hes greater than Frodo, definitely a greater warrior and more sturdy and tough. I just got done reading Lord of the Rings for the dozenth time(or more), as well as The Silmarillion, Unfinished tales(the Mariners Wife is my favorite unfinished tale), and now some of the history of middle earth(its a making of series of books. Im reading Morgoths RIng right now. That refers to the Earth, called Arda, which acts as Morgoths Ring hence the name). I really love Lord of the Rings, it hits home in all the feels, there losses but theres also great victories; theres great heroes and villains, and the world feels so real in so many ways. The tale of Aragorn and Arwen in the apendix is also fantastic. I REALLY dislike how they replaced Glorfindel the Balrog slayer(yeah he killed a Balrog in the fIrst age, in the escape from Gondolin, was killed himself in the battle but also killed the balrog himself, then was returned to life in the third age to fight against Sauron and help the quest of the ring and the rest of the High Elves of middle earth(such as Galadrial, and the House of Elrond mostly, and the Lindon and Grey Havens Elves).

I'm writing a book myself and could use some advice on characters if you're interested in reading it.

My characters are seldom that clear cut. There might be a mentor/bad boy, a goody two shoes forced by circumstances to be fairly chaotic, a best friend who doesn't even know what she is due to tampering with her mind, and so on.

Because they also tend to be the most masculine guys whereas the nicer guys tend to be far more feminine. Forget what you've heard: women are still just as attracted to the James Dean or John Wayne type as they ever were.

Doki Doki Women like confident men. Bad guys are more confident (and consequentially more conceited) than good guys, at least on average.
