I’ve always enjoyed Werewolves more than Zombies and Vampires, so it’s very interesting to hear about how old the stories of werewolves go back.

In Freudian terms, I see the werewolf as an unbounded id, the vampire as an inverted super-ego.

Werewolves are interesting. I think something is always lost when they aren't male, because I think they represent male aggression gone astray. I think the third Harry Potter movie is a good example of all that. The Witcher 3 also used the trope quite a lot. Again, I think modern culture has turned this "curse" into an almost consumerist experience. It's true that being a werewolf may have an exciting element to it, but it's still a cruse. Werewolves that can control themselves or their transformation miss a lot of the elements that make the monster compelling. This is why I liked the Harry Potter werewolf, he's actually a good man that's turned into an uncontrollable monster. Perhaps werewolves can be cured and redeemed, while vampires are just undead and thus completely evil. According to some legends, children born with a lot of body hair were bound to be werewolves. It's interesting to think about, maybe if you have a lot of fur you may be higher in testosterone production, which can make you more aggressive. Werewolves and vampires just got locked into this endless feud because the two tropes became famous at the same time during the early days of cinema. But it's easy to see why these two tropes are so enduring - rage among males and the existence of an unholy elite of bloodsuckers will always be relevant. The difference is whether or not we'll villainize or glorify these kinds of creatures. Personally, I think vampires should be deported straight to hell. I'd love to hear your thoughts on unicorns. Back before My Little Pony, they used to be fierce representations of nature.

My 7th grade English teacher read Stephen King’s Cycle of the Werewolf, the one with all the awesome Berni Wrightson illustrations, to our class and it absolutely terrified me as a kid. It also instilled in me a lifelong fascination with werewolves. Growing up in a very strict Baptist household, that was probably the most frightening fictional work I had ever been exposed to up to that point in my life. I’m actually working on a story with sort of an Eastern variation of the werewolf inspired by my time living in South Korea. I’m still working on the monster’s look, but I’m trying to incorporate elements of traditional Chinese lion and dragon designs into my werewolf character.

Perfect for me, Werewolves are my favorite monster/Cryptid 👍 Top 5 Werewolf movies. 1. Bad Moon 2. Howling 3. American Werewolf in London 4. Late Phases 5. Dog My favorite Werewolf Book is Thor. It's what the movie Bad Moon is based on. It's really cool because the book is from the perspective of the dog. He's the protagonist in both book and movie.

Zombies are my favorite trope enemy...Werewolves are my second. "An American Werewolf in London" was (is) my absolute favorite werewolf movie. Its sad that the genre is largely dead and movies just aren't interested in it anymore.

Werewolves are my favorite. Loved the show Werewolf when I was a kid. My mom made me a werewolf costume once, though a lot of people mistook it for a bear. Also loved the Nintendo Werewolf game, but it was really hard and I could never get very far until I played the emulator on PC, where I could save as I went. But there are very few good depictions in movies. My favorite is the first Underworld movie, and then the third. The other ones were terrible.

I think out of the 3 you've reviewed so far, werewolves scare me the most. Fast, violent, carnal, and uncontrollable. With sufficient wit you can reason with a vampire. Zombies are nowhere near as powerful. If I were attacked by a werewolf it would be the most frightening I think.

I really like werewolf films and show episodes. I agree they work best as beasts - the fear from the werewolf's POV being the losing of their mind, literally lunacy, and the harm they might do to people especially those they care about, unless they live as itinerant loners.

I’m big into the cryptozoology topic and the werewolf, also known as dog men, are seriously interesting.purely because lycanthropy and dog headed men are fucking everywhere in history. Greek lycanthropy like you mentioned, but also with the Greeks there was a tribe of dog headed men who were apparently ferocious warriors. Dog headed gods in Egypt. The shape shifting into the wolf or fox with skin walkers in Native American folklore Then werewolf in medieval Europe. Very amazing how the same tale gets told universally

In the Iliad, Diomedes in a leopard skin and Odysseus in a boar tusk helmet catch and kill a Trojan scout wearing a wolf skin. I've always wondered if there is some implied shape shifting going on or some lingering neolithic animal cult rituals. Anyone have a thought?

I'm currently writing a screenplay for a werewolf movie set in late 19th century Haiti, with Vodou presented as a supernatural force of light against the darkness similar to what's shown in European films. In the script, werewolfism is an inherited familial curse from Baron Samedi after a French slaver prayed to Samedi for protection near the beginning of the Haitian revolution. His grandson was able to keep the beast at bay from childhood because of the love and compassion of those he grew up around (much like Leon Corledo was able to contain the beast within through loving nurturing in The Curse of the Werewolf), but it comes back in adulthood from the arrogance he finds in success as well as the influence of his narcissistic, destructive mother. That way, the werewolf almost comes out from many different factors; genuine flaws of the character, exterior factors and supernatural means meeting in a catastrophic, perfect storm. As far as the werewolf design is concerned, I was very inspired by a photo of David Kessler mid-transformation that I saw in a werewolf book as a child, where he still had recognizable human features combined with grotesque, monstrous traits. I always felt that was much more disturbing and uncanny than just a straight bipedal wolf like most werewolves seem to be portrayed as in fiction lately, like an abomination that shouldn't exist. Another aspect of the script that I thought it was important to include, something often ignored in most werewolf stories, is the werewolf's victims. In most werewolf films, the monster's victims are usually innocent strangers or somebody that the werewolf's human alter ego didn't particularly like. In this one, he ends up killing the family of his love interest as a werewolf, which I think makes the story and character that much more tragic and the curse that much more horrifying. Given that you're one of my favorite writing/film analysis KZfaq channels, I absolutely loved hearing your thoughts on the genre and what makes a really scary werewolf story. Also, kudos for The Wolfman (2010) acknowledgment, my personal favorite movie of all time.

I did a twelve page comic for free comic book day way back in 2012. It was a were wolf story. The Were Wolf character could control his transformations. However each time he changed he lost a certain amount of control. So each time was a gamble for him, because he ran the risk of loosing his humanity.

Speaking of this topic I wonder what you think about canon lycanthropy in TES universe while in canon what animal you turn into depends on your race, so Nords become were-bears, folks from Cyrodil turn into were-lions, or Argoninas supposed to turn into were-crocodiles, this could be hell of an interesting thing to see

Werewolves are my favorite monster. I wish we had more werewolf movies and, especially, video games. I like that werewolves of some sort are in the upcoming Resident Evil but I would prefer if we could play one. Maybe as a rogue bioweapon who does not know their own nature. Sort of a Manchurian Candidate mixed with Tyler Durden with other actual werewolves so the player can't be sure which memories are delusions and what was a hallucination. Later on, the player would meet a survivor of their attack and their reaction would start the reveal. The person they think is the big bad at the start of the game would turn out to be their target and the werewolf had been manipulating his memories as an instinctive control over the cognitive functions. It creates the justification for the bioweapons to kill their target. Blurry Photos did a good episode on the history of werewolf mythology. I wish that it had been one of the earlier episodes but the information is still good.

I want a really good, bone chilling werewolf movie. Not an action movie. Not a romance movie. I want a real 'people fainting - ambulance on call - the exorcist debut' type of werewolf movie. I want to walk out the theatre in fear and paranoia that the werewolf is out to get me. I want a werewolf movie that will haunt me for weeks after I've seen the film. Is that so much to ask?

Gee where to start. Though I believe the best werewolf stories is when it is treated as a curse, an affliction that only death can cure. The unknown, mystery, make for good horror and the werewolf lends itself well to it. Steve King's silver bullet, movie version did this well, oddly the werewolf special effects were heavily criticized for looking more bear like than wolf. 🤔
