Rick Wakeman and David became good friends during this time. Bowie asked Rick to join his band. Rick respectfully declined, and actually joined YES the very same day. David always said that Rick made the right decision. I would have to agree!🎹

These lyrics are dope!! This might be my favorite Bowie song. I highly recommend the video for this song, it was 20 years ahead of it's time. Stark lighting, with Bowie in a bright blue suit jacket, orange hair, blue eye shadow and platform shoes. He is performing in an empty white space, which wasn't something we would see in rock vids until well into the 80s. And the theme of tabloid entertainment and cheap 'shock' stories. We know all of this VERY well now in 2021, but in 1971, only minds like Bowie, Andy Warhol, or Stanley Kubrick would have brought these themes into their art.

Great reaction. Featuring Rick Wakeman of Yes on piano & strings arranged by guitarist Mick Ronson, "Life On Mars?" is often recognized as one of the great compositions of the 20th century. Famously composed by Bowie in under 30 minutes. Lyrically, the song is a collage that touches on _alot_ & can be interpreted in innumerable ways. But as an existentialist takedown of corporate greed, political corruption, police brutality, shattered illusions, & media artifice, the song may be more relevant today than it was in 1972. "Thin White Duke" is the name of Bowie's _Station To Station_ era character persona in 1976 only.

Amazing to think these vocals were ‘live’, no autotune, nothing, all in one take. He grew visibly irritated if they had to go back & re record a song more than 3 times - incredible when put into that perspective

Rick Wakeman (of YES) arranged and played the the piano 🎹 on life on Mars when working as a session musician at Bowie’s recording studio. He also arranged and played the piano on Cat Steve’s “Morning has Broken “. David Bowie was so impressed by Wakeman he offered him a full time job but Wakeman joined Jon Anderson/Yes. 👍♥️😇

I'd never understood the lyrics to this song until now. A sad girl in trouble with her parents (probably because of her attraction to a boy) runs away from her house and into the distraction of a movie theater only to sit down to a stupid, boring, clichéd Marvel movie about dudes punching dudes. Is there life on Mars? There isn't any on Earth.
