We talk about the 4 types of storytelling in games! Henry Jenkins discusses these different narrative modes of video games in his article "Game Design as Narrative Architecture" but we will be applying his work to table top roleplaying games! Also, I paint a manticore!
Henry Jenkins' article: web.mit.edu/~21fms/People/henr...
Inspiration for the painting came from Katsuya Terada's concept work for Legend of Zelda: overmental.com/content/the-be...

I absolutely love the look of your Dwarf - he gives me such a perfect old school vibe, reminiscent of the better illustrations from the 1st edition AD&D manuals. And that is the best illustration of a manticore I’ve yet seen!

I like the idea that the monster you drew is just a cat, but that guy is just a little garden gnome who sees it as a monster.

I wouldn't let this cat jump on my laps to get caress, to rub, and to cuddle... ...at least not until he stops baring his teeth. (But I would have let this gnome protect my garden 😏)

I'm surprised how many comments are about the (incredibly awesome) art instead of the content itself. Anyway, this playlist is a true gem, and I'm happy I found it. Ironically enough (..I guess..), I do wish that in the future, you will have a drawing/painting workshop playlist. That will be amazing as well. Anyway... thank you. Shine on!

I think there's so much good we can get from looking at video game design. Their design space has really benefitted from having a very large amount of players to test ideas on over the years.

This reminds me of that PBS show where the guy would illustrate the story as it was being told. This, was very fun to watch, but I'm afraid I was so caught up in watching the artistry that I hardly paid attention! I guess I'll have to try again without the visuals, lol.

very interestings points I am building a dungeon crawler type of adventure, and I am really fond of trying to put little details about the dungeons throught the decors. giving foreshadowing of stuff to come, what it seem to be used as, or even piece of who the master of this place. and many of your video really brought points to continue thinking throught this dungeon. so thank you. keep the amazing work!

I don't understand how anyone can equate an NPC being specific about a goal they have as rail roading. It's not like the party is in any obligation to accept the terms or mission and even if they are told and then move to a location, they could always decide to stay at the same location, give up, join the opposing side. Fight each others. I guess sure the DM could keep manifesting God ex-machina event that force player into a certain path but just having an NPC state a mission isn't railroading, preventing player from deviating from a path or explore or explore other option would be.

In game where not every action modifies the story, but you can interpretate it, for example in a Pokémon game when you try to catch a pokemon for the game is the same if you catched it at the first try or if you had to use 50 pokeballs, the story doesn't change, BUT you as player can interpretate the scene like a hard battle and imaginate how much efford took to the character. In wich type of narrative is that included? it is emergent narrative?
@Momuzzz
@Momuzzz 4 ай бұрын
(Sorry if my english has errors)
@mapcrow
@mapcrow 4 ай бұрын
Yes! That is emergent because the story is authored by the player using the game’s systems.
@Momuzzz
@Momuzzz 4 ай бұрын
@@mapcrow But there is no distinction between things that are really happening in the story and mechanics that the players interpret, right?
@mapcrow
@mapcrow 4 ай бұрын
Well, according to the article I'm referencing, they are different modes. Neither one is better or worse, they are just springing from different places. So there are four distinctions mentioned in the article.@@Momuzzz

Is it just me, or is the discord invite bust? Other than that, great video as always. My personal preference is focussing on the emerging narrative, though these other narrative forms do aid in bringing that about. I also really like how the ink and watercolour piece came together. As is usually the case when I look at people paint there was this second where I thought 'Oh no', but in the end it looked marvelous.

Thank you! I think emergent narrative is what most ttrpgs are designed for, but some are scaffolded with more embedded and enacted narrative than others. My preference is for a rhizomatic game with a strong emphasis on emergent narrative!
