I was there! I love how the entire time Neil was either picking a knowledge/theory fight, looking disinterested/unimpressed or showing off that lovely shirt.

Brilliant, however, please put the ad at the beginning instead. It's so inappropriate to hear the beautiful end of the video only to have it drop into a horrible commercial.

True science is being interested in the world around you and wanting to know how it works. It's not facts. It's not big books. It's not reciting the planets, it's not knowing things. In Neil Tyson's words, "That makes you a fact memorizer." Understanding how things work, what drives how things work, having the set of utilities to inquire and question, THAT'S science.

Sorry Neil but it was the Crimean War not the US CW. And Caravaggio was doing it by feeling long before the Impressionists. And you don’t get Starry Night without the totality of the work. But other than that, interesting comments.

I also think people not reading books are no where near the point of watching astrophysicists and other scientists talk. Just like anything worth doing right, large books and in depth explanations will only further ones scientific ambition. So science is big books and equations, BUT its how one uses that knowledge gained from that hard work that makes science what it is. Debates and lively public conversations is a medium to gain an insight into how scientists personally view the world through.

Except the majority of science is motivated by curiosity with no attention paid to focusing on creating the next cure to a disease or clever gadget. In order to get those benefits you need a society in which intellectual pursuit can take you to the frontiers of discover, and in which news of your discoveries can be routinely disseminated.

You aren't responding to his comment. You are misdirecting. What the talk was about is irrelevant. He's saying the "popularization" of science is only good for introductory-level discussion. That's not real science. Science has rigor, lots of time and effort, lots of collaboration with many people. Alot of this is Politics/economics :/ He's still a douche though becasue Science Doesn't exist in a vacuum, clearly.
