Baking powder is a leavening agent so if you use that it will leaven the coffee pot, turning it from a 3 cup coffee maker to a 6 cup coffee maker. :-)

***** Thanks, That's great to hear, Baking soda is a brilliant cleaning product for so many things as it's mild and harmless to almost everything, being an alkali it neutralises odours which tend to be acidic in nature too, glad it was useful, to clean your Moka pot make sure you only use hot water but rinse and wipe the pot thoroughly and don't reassemble until fully dried.

When I cleaned similar moka pot that was unmaintained for a long time, there was a really dense and thick layer of burned coffee stuck in the funnel that didn't come off even after long soaking.

A nice vid. Just a thought though, I think scratching the aluminum surface is not a problem. You just need to dry it and let sit for a few hours to oxidize again, and you're good to go. Also, you might want to brew the soda solution a few times to give it a chance to get into the areas which are otherwise inaccessible. Cheers! :)
@Armuotas
@Armuotas 6 жыл бұрын
That foaming nuisance can be made somewhat easier if you put a sieve on top. It will burst most of the bubbles before it all drips all over the place. Learned it the hard way. :) Also to be aware, once you treat the pot with the soda bath, and then use and dry it the insides will have these small white mold-like "growths". I think it's some sort of mineral concretions, perhaps from tap water. They seem to disappear after a while.

Glad you find it useful, I am annoyed at myself for forgetting to add the end view but as I said to a previous commenter, it's not about cleaning to a shine and getting rid of all the marks because you can't necessarily but it's about removing old residue and deodorising so your coffee isn't tainted by sour old oils and such. Hope you enjoy the end result in your cup. That is indeed what matters.

ADDITIONAL ADVICE..... Once the cleaning pot are done, they are still wet, place the bottom pot upside down on the stove ring on high, for just one minute or less. This will dry fast and kills are germs and bacterias. You could do this on occasion using this technique, so you will never get residuals from water, or city water (chlorine), etc on the side of the pot. If your careful you could put the top pot opened, on top of the upside down bottom pot, while the stove ring are on high for one minute or less. YOUR POT IS COMPLETELY STERILIZE! ENJOY YOUR EXPRESSO!

Interesting that Bialetti mentioned bicarb of soda. In the instruction leaflet, they say occasionally use vinegar. I often thought bicarb was a better option for aluminium. On the stove top, I use a heat diffuser, rather than have direct flame on the boiler. My theory is, it helps protect the pot and distributes the heat better.
@spidiq8

That makes good sense. Gas stoves in the last 10 years or so are definitely not Moka pot friendly and I've seen adapters but a diffuser sounds good.

+Because I said so!!! I should have and to be honest didn't really think about it till after uploading and waching the video again and realising I hadn't. It won't come up like new unless you actually take something abrasive and take it down to fresh aluminium underneath, it will remove the bulk of stains though but the main reason for using this recipe is deoderising, this pot was one I bought second hand and it was whiffy, these are often used then can get left often with old coffee in and that and the oils will go rancid

Thank you for clarifying. That one guy was very unnecessarily rude in the comments. If you wouldn't mind, I'd like to ask you more questions about cleaning and deodorizing old Moka pots. I found an old Moka pot in my mother's old cupboard and decided to take it in and restore it. One thing I noticed right away was the bottom part having this white-ish color powder and odor to it and I've tried to clean it out under hot water but it still remains. Have you have similar experiences with these pots and does the baking soda solution help get rid of that powder substance? Also, if the coffee keeps coming out with a metallic taste to it, will it ever go away over time or is there a way to get rid of It completely using this baking soda method? I'm afraid of unknowingly consuming some of the aluminum particles and white powder substance so I want to know if this pot is salvageable or not. Any help and info would be greatly appreciated as I really hope to solve this issue and make good use of this pot rather than purchase a new one. Thank you and hope to hear from you soon. Cheers!
@spidiq8
@spidiq8 5 жыл бұрын
Some people are, apparently they can't help themselves, never mind. Re your pot, white ish powder sounds like aluminum oxide which means any protective coating has gone and it's oxidising, unfortunately there's no easy way to seal this and every time you use it you'll remove some of the oxidation and some will inevitably end up in your drink and more will occur naturally in between. Re the taste. It's common to taste 'off' the first couple of uses hence 'seasoning' brew at least one pot then discard it, (I use cheap supermarket beans or pre ground for this job). I'd say clean it externally and keep it as a display piece on a kitchen shelf and get yourself a new one.

Was it sucessfull? As a project it wouldn't normally catch my interest but my sisters old pot is in a similar state and to be honest I think a new one is called for. A new one results in: cleanliness, a new safety valve, new gasket, new funnel and new filter for not much money. My previous attempt at cleaning an old pot were tedious in the extreme and with results generously described as mediocre. The old pot chucked in recycling.

willisoften Yes, but it won't clean to a sparkle. If it's stained it'll remove a little but the? Thing it does is cleans and deodorizes. If it's corroded and or you need new gaskets, valve etc you're as well getting a new one.

willisoften You're welcome, I am quite active on here and try to reply to comments where possible. If the funnel is missing then definitely replacement of the whole pot will be more economical and give more peace of mind knowing it's new and clean. The one thing about these I never liked is that you can't remove and clean the mesh in the funnel properly, the springs in the safety valve can corrode and while it's unlikely to cause a spectacular explosion it will expel steam and can catch you unawares and scald. Have a look also at stainless steel moka pots, a great alternative if you are unsure about aluminium and health concerns.

It's not about cleaning the pot back to a brilliant as new shine, it's a method to clean off any nasty deposits and deoderise it. Often physical scrubbing is the only way to get back to clean metal and that isn't necessarily good, as you're back to bare aluminium. If the metal is corroded or oxidised also it won't help. If you have health concerns you might want to consider getting a stainless steel Moka pot, they wont taste or season the same but are easier to scrub clean.

I appreciate what you're saying. But espresso is not the same as the coffee from a Moka pot, Moka pots have been around much longer than espresso machines and they do make a great coffee, no question. The emphasis on quickly and that's the reason for the invention of the espresso, a great one we also have the wonderful Italians to thank for.

That I don't know, I only know they're called Moka pots in the UK and assumed that was the name they were given in Italy?

JK V If you watch video you'll note right at the very start I say 'espresso' with the inverted commas hand sign AND explain that Moka pots do not make true espresso extractions but they are commonly called such hence the inclusion in the title.

This is rubbish bi carb does not work. the Manufactures recommend white vinegar for a good clean then always allow for all parts to dry and remain dry between each use.
@spidiq8
@spidiq8 5 жыл бұрын
I've never seen a recommendation of using white vinegar on aluminium by any manufacturer, do you have a source for this please? Bicarbonate of soda is for deodorising as well as cleaning and it will eliminate lingering odours in the pot.

@@woodchipper3538 I like that way of thinking, sadly we are becoming more and more a throwaway and replace society, one of my passions is mechanical watches and I feel more connection to one I've bought vintage second hand and serviced than a brand new one.

@@spidiq8 my mom is one of those persons that store things and never use it. I found a lot of old kitchen machines unused... brand new. I found a little cute moka pot ruined almost unused (the seal was broken almost dry) Things are made for enjoy not for decoration or to accumulate them. I grab, repair and enjoy them. Love fixing old stuff or repurposing too. You can do alot of amazing things with old stuff. Good video! I love coffee in the morning.

@@holymegadave My parents generation and mine too to a degree are of the hoarding 'just in case' variety I try not to be and I do have coffee gadgets that don't get used often but that's because I'm so obsessed with coffee generally. Good for you recovering these things. That's what recycling is really about.

@@sandrathompson8879 No feelings hurt here. Simple fact is that you can't please everyone. People criticise if you explain and want you to make a 10 second clip with pictures, people complain if there's a 10 second clip with only pictures and no explaining, people complain if there's bg music, people complain if there's no bg music. But there's a distinct correlation between the loudest complainants and their own lack of channel content, maybe that's just coincidence but this is after all, a free platform, free to create and upload and try to help as I like to do, free to watch or not as you see fit. It costs nothing but free time and if you care to look at my many videos and comments and replies you'll see that I try very hard to reply to all and help where I can.
