Before anything,i think it's important to say that this day is a celebration of the working class women of Russia who marched for labour rights, which preceded the October revolution. Literally. The day was called "international working women's day" and celebrated in march 8 by USSR,and then china,and then the rest of the world sort of did that. So this day isn't just about some abstract identity or some poetic conception of women(you know...സർവത്യാഗിയും സർവംസഹയും ആയ സ്ത്രീ) it's the celebration of working class women,or their struggle for rights,for equality in the work place,as well as in the rest of society. There needs to be less glorification posts about how great y'all mothers are,and more for solidarity to all working women, and support their struggles for equality and justice

Regarding your first question, "do we need to celebrate a day as women's day?". Actually even I used think the same. Women or the person who identified as women should treated equally as men for everyday not only for one day. Again we know about our society, we should talk alot for bring a positive change, sometimes we should adress a same thing for alot for its positive outcome, so if we think in that way, women's day can be a day for address to the equality of women in this society..I feel it's a day on which we are saying "yes we are still here for our rights, until we have the equality in every areas of our society..." 🥰

The problem with our society is that, it is considered "cool" to celebrate women on particular days. It has never occured to people's mind that these sort of ads/posts/speeches are patronizing to the core. These "modern"/"progressive" stuffs does not make any difference unless people try to understand the fact that we all are a single living species on a single ball of rock. Feminism does not mean celebrating women or pushing men off their pedestals, it simply means women should be treated the same without patronizing and there is no room for discrimination one way or the other. I am in 2 minds about the celebration of a particular day as "Women's Day". On the one hand, it encourages institutions, governments, companies etc to implement schemes, focus on positive messages, foster discussion and so on. And when these have long term effects, we take a step forward. After all, the world as a whole has a long long way to go before women can achieve true equality, where they can be seen as just another human being. The ad with the trans woman was truly beautiful. But if a day like this is used to reinforce patriarchal notions like "marriage and motherhood completes a woman", "women are great because they can sacrifice", and other such ideas, then we are stepping backwards.

Great video and very relevant call outs. As a woman among a bunch of men working in IT, I have totally experienced the ad situation- none of the men stood up for me, in fact I said I did the work and I want to present/ talk about it. After that, I was even not invited to follow up meetings. I hope this ad will be an eye opener for shamelessly taking on other person’s work. Reality is men will stand up for their “own” women in the family, but how many will stand up for their colleague/ team member. Gayathri we talk about film industry, get into the weeds of IT it will even more gender based discriminations.
