A lot of people don't understand college is great if your heart is in it, but if it isn't its just a big waste of time and money. I have told all of my kids, follow your dreams and you will never feel like you are working. I see so many people who are already dead inside and are playing catch up to the grave, they are unhappy, unmotivated and never know what true freedom is. I don't want that for my kids, I want them to know what true freedom is! 💯

Yea, but sometime parents don’t really believe in their dreams. Simply because they think is unrealistic, they think is crazy, they think is silly, and they think they’re not real, and force you to work at 9-5 jobs that you hate, like you better work at McDonalds, grocery store and other 9-5 jobs, then going after you're silly dreams. But I want to say to that, is prove them wrong.

There's a logical reason behind everything. There are thousands of children in India who don't wanna study but they don't have a choice because they are too afraid to fail and if they fail there's nothing in this world for them. Most parents are too poor to choose a backup option for their kids and so the kids don't get any chance. The problem is not parent but it's actually poverty which has changed the mindset of many parents.

I feel like the mother had good intentions, trying to do what she thought was best for her daughter. Usually, desi parents tend to want their children to be one of 2 things: a doctor or engineer; those jobs tend to give a lot of financial stability. Also, some of the stuff mentioned is what parents learned from their parents. Personally, I feel like children should be given the freedom to choose their careers and support + guidance (not interference) from their parents. NOTE: The above is my opinion as a desi person.

I totally agree. Everyone is complaining about how parents should let their kids live their life but that's not their job as parents. Parents are supposed to guide and correct you to the right direction. I find it dumb how everyone says "follow your dreams" dreams don't pay the bills when it comes to it. Go to college and get a stable job. Once your side career kicks up, quit and go full time on the side career. Sometimes, we have to differenciate dreams from reality.

It can't be more relatable (the 'studying' part) . I'm Asian (specifically Indian), and recently me and my sister had our final exams of the last term. Long story short, I got 493/500 (98%) and my sister got 499/500 (99%). My aunt called to congratulate us, and her exact words were 'You both did good, but (to me), you need to work a little more hard'. This personally hurt me. I just wish our parents and relatives appreciated us more working so hard to meet their expectations. 😫

Reminds me of a line i read in a Sudha Murthy book about how engineering was considered a man's domain back then and she wanted to become an engineer her whole family didn't like the idea and told her no one would want to marry her. She managed to find an engineering college that accepted her and she scored higher than her classmates. And what her family said about no one wanting to marry her just because she pursued engineering was a complete lie because she has a husband called Narayana Murthy.

First, no one can live their life according to how others want you to live. You don’t owe anyone to fulfil someone else’s dream in life for them at the expense of what you want to do, and I’m talking about situations like “ it was my dream to become-insert anything- so I’m going to need you to become that so I can live vicariously through your experience to fulfil my dream” kind of thing…At one point everyone has to realize…it’s your job to fulfil your own dreams and others can’t fulfil that for you. Besides…doctors, lawyers, teachers and engineers are not the only successful and happy people on earth, and yes there are many people who are in those fields that are extremely unhappy too. “Do you know how many starving people are in that field” can be said about every and any field of work because it’s the persons skills and how they market their work and their ability to keep that job which makes that person successful in any field. Please don’t blindly think being a doctor, lawyer, teacher or engineer will automatically make someone happy…because it doesn’t.
