I taught myself to be crochet about 50 years ago using crochet THREAD and STEEL HOOKS (the hooks most people dont want to use anymore since they're so miniscule!) I was determined to learn! Lol 🧶 I "thought" I knew how to crochet. However, I've learned so many new ways of crocheting various stitches, plus so many wonderful tips and tricks since I've been watching KZfaq! My eyes have really been opened and I love it! There's something new to learn every day! Thank you, Tuulaa, for your channel and for being such a in good teacher.

Finally the absolute easiest and best way to keep straight edges! This method should be more widely known. Another plus is that this method produces a sturdy edge that makes adding a border super easy and doesn’t cause big holes! Thank you so much!

@eiguajardo
@eiguajardo 2 жыл бұрын
@@thejessica-est theres no fix, just try to put the edge stitches inside of the double crochet stitches, don't go around the entire stitch, that creates bigger separation/holes, go thru it and the result is much more clean

Hello, I hope you can help me. I'm new to crochet and just learned the DC stitch. After crocheting several rows I wasn't very happy with the way it looked because it had gaps on the sides and also the edges were not as straight as the SC and 1/2 DC stitches I had just learned. The instructions asked me to chain 10 + 3 extra stitches. So I start with a slip knot, chain 13 and then the last 3 stitches of the chain will be the first DC stitch because I am told to skip the first 3 and make my first DC into the 4th chain. I looked on the internet to try and find another method to make the edges look better and came across your video. I am a bit confused though as to how to start your technique from the very beginning, with the foundation chain. Do I start your technique after I have made the first 10 chains and then instead of chaining an extra 3, I will try your technique? Or do I do the first row like normal (making the first DC into the 4th chain until the end of the first row and then start your technique at the end of the first row before turning the row and continue on with your video)? Otherwise, are you able to make a video showing your technique from the beginning starting with the slip knot and the foundation chain? Thanks for any help you can provide! Your edges look very straight and I really hope I can learn your way of making the DC stitch. Best, Lisa

Hello Lisa, sorry it has taken this long to answer - I do try to answer comments every 3 days but time goes so fast! With this technique I would do as you suggest, make the very first row after your chain the way you have the basic instructions for and then start this from the 2nd row on. At times I have been wondering if I should make some basic tutorials but then decided not to because there seems to be so many of them! But you are not the first one asking, maybe I should consider that! Hope this helps! _Tuula

Excellent presentation! I assume this would work with the higher stitches (triple, quadruple) also. I always forget how many extra chains to make at the end of the row for each stitch type. Do you have a quick way of remembering?
@TuulaMaaria
@TuulaMaaria 3 жыл бұрын
Yes, works for those bigger stitches too. The number of chains can depend on the yarn used so for high stitches I try it out each time, to see what amount looks best.

@@TuulaMaaria Let me see if I get it No matter what the pattern calls for I use your double crochet technique at the end and the beginning of each row?
@TuulaMaaria
@TuulaMaaria 3 жыл бұрын
@@patriciamalloy5501 Yes, as long as you are working with double crochets. This does not affect the number of stitches on the row because the two stitches at the end count as one.

When making and pillow cover you have to single crochet in the stitch two times can you double crochet in the same stitch or put two single crochet in the same stitch
@TuulaMaaria
@TuulaMaaria 4 жыл бұрын
Single crochet goes a bit differently, I wouldn't put two stitches in the same stitch. Just chain one for turning and then always have the first stitch of the new row in the same stitch where the chain is. I really should make a video about that, several people have asked about that! 😊

I have an "unofficial" unedited video about half double crochets that I made as an answer to this same question, kzfaq.info/get/bejne/f56ojaemtZe-kWw.html With single crochets it is important that you always make the first stitch of the row into the same stitch where you turning chain stitch is, to avoid holes. There is no problem in alternating the stitches and getting a straight edge 😊

Just a suggestion - there was no YT when I started crochet, so I pretty much just followed the books and such. I have a hook grip and yarn tension-ing hold that I've never seen in a YT video. Play around with holding the hook and yarn in a way that feels better to you. If you don't copy the videos on how they do a slip knot, hold the hook, or hold the yarn, as long s it works for you, it works. I have a modified hold of the hook - modified knife hold (just holding it like I would a table knife, and I just hold the yarn loosely, with tension provided by my thumb/index/middle fingers, the other fingers just curl into my palm around the yarn. I can hold my project with my off hand and tension the yarn, while moving the hook with my thumb as a guide.

Single crochet is easier. You chain 1 for turning and always make sure you put the first stitch of the row into the very first stitch, where the chain is.
