Even though I put a border on my afghans I've always bristled at that gap. I've been a crocheter for over 55 years but never bothered to look into a workaround. Love your favorite method and can hardly wait to practice it tomorrow!

Great demonstration on how each looks after completion. I like the SC plus the ch 1 the best. The edge seems to be straighter. Thanks.

I've been playing around with ch3 substitutes for a while because I don't like the gap that the chain leaves, but not settled on a particular method yet. This was super useful to see them all together!

Almost ten years of crocheting and I swear I learn something every day! Great video! Thank you so much! And to everyone who got as frustrated as I did at the ends of rows, don't feel like you have to go exactly like the pattern, sometimes there are little tricks that make much more sense! Patterns usually say chain up three and I thought I was supposed to but it drove me crazy!

I've been crocheting for 51 years and this is the first time seeing these techniques, with the exception of ch 2 beginning crochet chain which I use. Can't wait to try the other two alternative stitches to see what I like best. Great video. I think it will be understandable even to a beginning crocheter.

The single crochet and chain one is probably my favorite- I’ve tried a couple of times to do the standing double crochet and while it looks good, I struggle to keep them uniform and wrap the big loop. It’s a happy middle for sure!

Thank You sooo much. Just wish I’d seen this before I started my current shawl project that leaves one edge without a border. Hate those holes! What I can’t figure out is-why don’t pattern writers include any of these methods? Any one of your ways is preferable to the 3 chain up pattern method.

What a great video! Exactly what I was looking for. I never knew how to end the row so I watched your video many times to visualise where to insert the hook on the last chain. I learnt two things at the same time. I have got to master the twisitng of the hook to make a dc, a very elegant and a professioinal finish. Very well explained and in detail. Excellent zooming so it was pleasant to watch and understand. Most videos are not worth watching as there is NO zooming and they don't think of beginners. Congratulations to you. You are so humble and you are gifted for teaching. Thanks for sharing and caring. Your fan from France. xxx

I use the no turning chain double crochet, but after I turn the yarn on the hook giving myself two loops on the hook, I insert the hook through the first stitch before pulling a loop through so that I have three loops on the hook and can make a proper and solid double crochet. It comes out nicely. You have to be careful not to pull the initial loop up too far.

I always chain 2 instead of 3 because that doesn’t leave a huge holes or I’ll use extended single crochet if I need too. I think you just have to play with around with your crocheting to get what you want and what works for you. But I never chain 3.

You can also for the turning chain just Chain 2 instead of Chain 3 and when you make the following Double Crochet on the second stitch from the previous row, not the first stitch, the third chain will happen, be formed, appear automatically at the connection point of the two stitches. So, Ch2, sk1, DC. Check the turning chain now. You will count 3 chains on it, one more than the original 2. I have also seen some Ch1 and then do the DC in the first stitch. They don't Ch2, only Ch1.
