MATT BOMER, known for his gorgeous physique, lost 40 pounds to play this role...Matt Bomer is a phenomenal actor, and also a phenomenally BEAUTIFUL man...To watch him disintigrate before our eyes is heart-rending...He actually lost 40 punds to play this role, while still filming episodes of his TV show "White Collar" at the same time...Julia Roberts said of him, "He lost half his weight and came back twice the man..." The scene in the subway where all Felix's fear and pain show in his eyes as he watches the old man covered in sores is like looking into the pit of hell...It is Felix's gentleness, sweetness & goodness that opens Ned's bitter, angry heart...At the end, Felix gently tells Ned to "find a way to fight again"...Ned's real-life counterpart, author, political firebrand & activist Larry Kramer went on to form ACT UP...

Thank you, thank you, thank you for reacting to this. It is such an important and superbly acted and directed movie. Admittedly, it's a hard watch. But it's really too bad that so many people don't know about it, or if they do, they don't want to watch or react to it because it's "too sad." Hell yes, it's sad. But this happened. This was real life for gay men of my generation. I'm a 61-year-old gay man, and by pure dumb luck I dodged the bullet and I'm still here, but so very many like me are not. Sometimes it feels like people, including younger gays, don't even want to know about this period in LGBT history, but we shouldn't let it be forgotten. By the way, this is based on the play by Larry Kramer, which he wrote in 1985, during the still early days of the epidemic, and is fairly autobiographical, with the Ned Weeks character being based on Kramer himself. Okay, so I was a member of ActUp in the timeline of this film. It’s pretty accurate to the events in real life. From my circle of friends in NYC back in the 80s I am the only one who made it to the year 2000. The anger you see in the film is nothing compared to what we were all feeling at the time.

I would really recommend the 2014 film 'Pride'. Set in a similar time to this, in the UK, about solidarity between striking miners and LGBTQ+ community

No movie has ever made me so utterly devastated and furious at the same time. My heart breaks for everyone we lost and their loved ones. Reagan and Bush have their blood on their hands.

Just to let you know. A LOT of the marvel actors have lgbtq+ backgrounds. Which is the FUNNIEST shit ever. Literally all 3 Spider-Man’s have been in a gay role.💀💀💀

The hardest part of this movie is realizing that these things not only really happened but that this is the sanitized version. Once you recover from this movie, I highly recommend seeing the film Bent (1997) it stars Clive Owen, Ian McKellen, Mick Jagger, and several other stars before they became well known.

In the summer of ‘79 I had just started dating a guy from Colorado. One Saturday afternoon he got a call from a friend in Denver telling him about a mutual friend who had just died of something they were calling, “The Gay Plague”. By 1983 I was experiencing an ongoing anxiety attack. Two friends of mine became AIDS buddies. They would visit victims in their homes. They would usually cook, clean and shop for and even bathe them. Sometimes they would also hold them while they died. I also lost two friends whom I had previously dated. I am now 74 and in good health. I often wonder, “Why am I still here?”

Now you must watch the FELLOW TRAVELERS limited series. The script was written by Ron Nyswaner, the same guy who wrote the screenplay for "Philadelphia". It stars Matt Bomer and Jonathan Bailey. It's AMAZING!

So... how wonderful to have an ally and someone who is empathetic and compassionate to the travesity that occurred in the movie. I don't think anyone has reacted to the Normal Heart. I'm not sure I would recommend that as a movie for straight people to watch, much less LGBT+ peeps. Only because it's very sad and frustrating and angering. It's a great movie but a tough one to watch. You're editor gave you a hard one. What's next. Longtime Companion. Which is also a great movie. Anyway thanks for watching it and more importantly being a good person.

I can’t watch these movies. I graded HS in 83 and moved to Denver after college. Normalizing close friends dying and then getting up to go to the work the next day, going out dancing with friends, and burying it all. The brain does an amazing job of coping with the unthinkable, and I just can’t

I love/hate this movie. Love because it really showed what it was like at the time, and hate it because it showed what it was like. No one cared about us. Jim Parsons talking about his drawer full of little cardboard tombstones broke me.

Try watching the movie AND THE BAND PLAYED ON. Great HBO movie about AIDS. Almost plays like a documentary about how AIDS came about. Great actors in this movie, you'll see sooo many names.

YOU SHOULD WATCH THE BOYS IN THE BAND!!! another Ryan Murphy film, Matt Bomer and Jim Parsons again but this time with Zachary Quinto and a few others, entire cast are out gay actors, it will put you THROUGH IT but it's incredible, very rich history behind the creation of it too

I watch this movie to remind myself of the generations who've come before me who went through a real fight to be acknowledged and respected. They fought to be seen as human beings. Todays generation is giving the trans community that worked hard to be seen as well a bad rap by demanding that women spaces be accepting to anyone who says their women even if they arent going through the steps to transition. They should be fighting to create their place among us like women and gay and lesbians have had to do.

The celebration was really because the DOMA (Defense Of Marriage Act) was overturned that day...

You asked if it was mostly younger men that got it, and I think in the earliest years that may have been true. It was post-Stonewall and after Harvey Milk. Younger men were unapologetically out, or experimenting and coming to terms with themselves.

This is based on an iconic play. So good, the play is heartbreaking
