The nerd in me always enjoyed the technical aspects of straight photography but I am sorta an artsy fartsy hipster too so I've always enjoyed the Bauhaus movement in general as it leans to technical aspects but adds a humanistic dimension to it! Lucia Moholy is one of my favorite classic photographer. It's such a shame she didn't get the credit she deserved for so long! Great video and introduction to the ideas!

Clint sent me here, loved the video, here to stay. I've been getting in to photography big time this spring and it's very interesting to learn about the origins of photography as an art form. Would love to see more about similar topics. (Can defo see some family resemblance btw)

It is indeed Tal-bot! I've been to his house where he developed his first camera (well I say house, mansion) and seen the window where he did his first photograph.

I agree with you, never do I comment when someone may use their phone, point & shoot or shoots from the hip. That's ok, I like straight photography. The straight lines of a building not falling over, the sharpness etc. I took a photo of the Tetons from about where Ansel A. & the thing I noticed was the bend of the Snake River was was covered in trees where his image the bend was clearly in view. Our world changes & so do cameras. I still use my 4x5 & darkroom. Good video.

It wasn't until I saw the work of the pictorialist William Mortensen that I saw anything like my own style of photography. I am nowhere near his level of skill, but There are similarities in how we think. Personally, I think the war on pictorialism by the f/64 group ultimately did photography a disservice. It did establish photography as an art form, but at the cost of imagination, inventiveness, and storytelling photography. Today, we see much of that in film, and narrative art, but only rarely in photography.

The thing is, people agreeing more with straight photography, will deem the pictorialist approach as invalid and their way as the correct way, whereas people agreeing with pictorialism will think that both approaches are perfectly fine, albeit straight photography being more restrictive than it needs to be. I think so at least, right?

It's crazy to me the amount of gear today's photographers use to make a simple still life. In the old days, photographers like Sudek just shot next to a well-lit window. That's the type of photography I want to do. I don't know if that's straight photography or not...
