A Cabover. It’s like a word you don’t hear anymore. And there were literally thousands of them 40 years ago. Don’t even have any idea who still produces them yet. Still very popular in the rest of the world.

I worked for DOE, and we had two 16V71 Detroit Diesel generators at one of the facilities for backup power. They would test load bank them at 1000 amps and they wouldn’t even breathe hard. Badass engines!

I went to school on the old 2 cycle Detroits 40+ years ago and loved the old 16v's and 12v's, especially the smaller 53 series 12v - which is hard to find. The 71 series 12v's and 16v's are still available if you want one, and can afford it. Even worn out one bring good money. I suppose a chromed-out 12v53 would look pretty cool on a Leno style rat-rod! Funny thing is, a new modern EFI 6 cylinder will make damn near twice the power of this old 16v71 and burn a 1/4 of the fuel doing it. Nice looking rig though! That brings back memories!

Such an awesome truck. I'd love to see what the setup looks like with the cab tilted, and the shifter/doghouse setup. Can't imagine there's a ton of room for that beast of an engine!

The 16 V 71 was 2/ 8V71's bolted together . That would be pretty cool. I hauled one once, to a rock pit, they were going to put it in a Euclid dump truck. I think it actually ran a big generator and used electric motors at each wheel to drive the truck. I never seen a truck with a 16V engine. They take up a lot of room

That is my uncle Al's old truck I remember that truck from when I was just a kid I always wondered if that truck was still in the state or went to some old scrap yard I am so overfilled with joy brings back childhood memories.

only Detroits have that cold idle sound no others like it.

ONLY thing cooler than this is starting up a big old radial aircraft engine. They crank and do nothing. Then they kick and run backwards a few seconds. Then they drip oil and catch fire. When they finally do start running it's on like five of 18 cylinders. The others chime in after a while. When it finally is tested right before takeoff is sounds silky smooth and idles like a sewing machine. The airliners I worked on had four engines and each one held 30 gallons of oil. There was another 100 gallons inside the plane an it could be pumped where it was needed in flight.
