Back in the early 70s , 18 wheeler going down mt eagle north. No brakes. Coming upon a run away ramp. An old couple decided to do a pic-nic at the entrance of the ramp. Trucker had no where to go run over their mh, or go on by. He went down just a short way had to go over the hill. He didn’t make it. The old couple were charged with vehicular homicide. So folks please for the sake of the trucker, pay attention, leave those ramps open, they are there for a reason.

how it possible no brakes?? u scared me much
@Carstuff111
@Carstuff111 3 жыл бұрын
@@jinyax3321 There can be many causes for no brakes on a truck, the most common I have seen, over heated brakes. Once the brakes get hot enough, they DO NOT WORK. Have seen drivers try to stop over loaded rigs on flat and level ground catch their brakes on fire because they over heated them so quick, and one of those happened to plow into a line of vehicles and hurt 6 people.
@ChevyConQueso
@ChevyConQueso 3 жыл бұрын
@@jinyax3321 Brake fade is a real thing. Most people aren't familiar with it anymore, since newer cars and pickups all have disc brakes now. 18 wheelers do not; they're all drum. Drum brakes "fade" and lose braking power when used too much and are overheated. That's why the driver in the video uses all the other means to slow his truck down, so he doesn't have to use his brakes unless he needs them. Jake brakes, standard engine braking, adding loads to the engine to fight the rolling resistance like using the compressor and fan, and keeping the engine cool by running the heater (uses engine heat) and the windows down for a little extra capacity. These things can be done in pickup trucks and cars as well if you're loaded down or just driving in very steep areas like in the Rockies to keep the vehicle from going to fast. Run away ramps are a last resort, and have saved many lives of drivers and others over the years.

Love your videos man! My first trip to the west coast, in 1986, I was pulling a 48' flatbed with a Freightliner with just a 350 Cummins, no Jake. No power like the trucks today. I had almost no experience. Unloaded ceiling tile in LA. then went up to Bakersfield and loaded oil field pipe going to Houston, grossing probably 80,000. Had NO CLUE about mountains. Started down Cajon Pass, riding the brakes. By the time I got to the scales, trailer brakes were smoking bad. I still can't believe they didn't say anything to me. But I pulled over after weighing and sat a long time until I thought they had time to cool. Somehow I made it down to San Bernardino without killing myself or someone else. I learned the lesson of a lifetime that day.

Hey (sorry I don't think I caught your name on a video). I'm an attorney but find your videos interesting. Years ago, I represented numerous commercial drivers with various tickets, but even apart from that, I've always liked seeing tractor trailers on the freeways, especially at night with the running lights. You get to see a lot of good scenery. If you ever pass through the Albuquerque area, let me know, and I'll buy you a coffee at one of the nearby truck stops. Drive safe.

Michael Thomas.Do you happen to know Jim Klepper the interstate Attorney from Arkansas who also represents truckers? He writes article of interest for truckers in the TRUCKERS magazine. I sent him a letter of what happened to me in New York and he published it in the TRUCKERS magazine to warn other truckers about possible corruption either with the City of Hamburg,N.Y or with the New York State Police.In my case it was definitely corruption.Sad when the truckers today have so many other restrictions and have to worry about getting tickets that are falsified! In my case if I would have "just pleaded guilty" like my wife suggested I would have lost my job as the insurance company that insured us drivers would have suspended coverage for me due to my age.Trucker who run I-90 near Buffalo,to Rochester beware!

It’s nice to see a young guy like you who does it right. When I started you worked with the truck, understood how she worked and what it would and would not do. Today these guys let the technology bail them out all the time and they rely on it. But when it fails it’s catastrophic. You’ve got to be tethered to the truck at all times. Too many “drivers” are just along for the ride.

Thank you so very much. Years ago, my family traveled a few times to Florida to visit my grandparents. After losing my dad back in 2015, I began remembering going up this mountain but never could find the route dad took, I searched for a few years but could never find the long highway with the curve heading up the mountain. Today, watching this video you made, it was all right there. So many memories flooded me of our family trips to Florida, driving over Monteagle, my mom being scared, seeing the beautiful rocks and waterfalls coming out of the mountain, my dad joking and having a blast going over this mountain. Thank you for helping me bring back so many wonderful family memories, gave me a good cry of missing my dad and brother who passed away in 2012 from cancer.

Driver from Canada here, been retired for 12 years… these videos give me the itch to go back, I’m only 41.. retired at 30 due to a collision causing serious brain trauma and a plethora of other injuries. The DOT here took my Commercial licence away for 2 years due to a small seizure I had on my way to the hospital in the medivac. But now I’m clear and itching to get back to fuel hauling Btrains. Love your vlogs. Stay safe and your head on a swivel.

I know it's an older video but I appreciate the demonstration! I just got my CDL last Friday and was looking for a video that would show me how to safely go down. Well done, thanks man!

My OCD kicking in when you pull in to the check station - SHUT OFF THE DAMN TURN SIGNAL!!!! I have legit woke up from a dead sleep and yelled at my husband to shut the damn turn signal off when he’s forgotten it and drove along for a while. The clicking sound of it woke me up. 😂

When over the Eagle in '74 hauling chemicals. #50 Cummins and no exhaust brake. My Dad who was a trucker told me to start off the mountain in the same gear you were in after the climb. Still gives a pucker factor as a young man. Great vid. Be safe out there

Also aren't going to need the runaway ramps :) I'm seeing how things go for me the next couple years and if they don't pan out i'm gettin a CDL and making this my life. I love to drive (partially to blame for my '07 Mustang GT) but it's so relaxing and seeing some of the beautiful sights truckers get to makes it even better.
