24:50 I used to be a pretty toxic player back in the day. Especially after hitting diamondfor the first time years ago, I had put a lot of time and energy into the game. Back then StarCraft was really the only thing that brought me joy. I was severely depressed and insecure (even suicidal for a long time), so when I would lose, I'd sometimes take it out on my opponent. Thankfully I never typed any of the more deranged things seem here, I'd mostly just type "gtfo noob" if I was winning or "op race" instead of a gg, and the occasional swearing. I think all of that stemmed from the fact that almost all my self-worth was derived from being "good" at sc2. Today I am in a much better state of mind and thankfully stopped with the toxicity. I don't believe the people who toxic do it because they are bad people. I'd like to think that when I am being flamed, the other person is just unloading his frustrations in the only way he knows how or in the only way that's available to them. When all your self worth is tied to a victory screen, it's difficult to not get angry when the other person outplays you.

I think a big part of it is we're in what I would call the digital generation where most of our interactions are held through digital mediums (phones, social media, etc) where you don't see or acknowledge a person, all you see is a name. If you persist in this kind of environment, it tends to lead to sociopathic type behavior where you dehumanize anyone and devalue anything that doesn't serve your own implied wants or needs. So they lash out in some utterly destructive ways and feel fine about it because they don't even associate the person they're saying it to as an actual person... it's just a name that isn't serving their needs. Sadly this is something I see only getting worse as we continue to become more and more digital in our interactions.

@@PiGstarcraft Probably because SC2, especially at the higher levels, is a difficult game to play and keep up with. Most people dealing with the digital addiction tend to reinforce what comes easily and is convenient... So they show up for a while, lash out because they can't just press F2 and win, and eventually move on because they're not getting what they want out of the exchange. From what I've seen in your videos, most people respond appropriately by not taking them seriously or feeding into their temper tantrums. You don't reward a 2 year old for stomping their feet when they don't get a new toy in the store, you don't reward trolls for trying to ruin your experience because they choose misery.

I think it’s actually another layer when it comes to crazy hateful rants like in this episode, where anonymity allows racists and misogynists to project whatever qualities they hate irl onto an opponent that is frustrating them in the moment. Also not to be annoying but the real problem with the digital era feels like it’s the way social media and digital media in general is designed to be addicting and damaging for the user in order for the companies to make more money. The same way a gambling addict can throw their life away at a slot machine, terminally online people can really lose track of what they need in order to actually live a healthy life. Just my 2 cents

I wish i was good enough at the game to harvest such levels of salt. I remember one game, it was a 4v4 and our team got rolled, but I was zerg and i kept a handful of drones roaming around, keeping out of sight and i would spawn a Hachery just long enough to reset the "show all units" timer the enemy team couldn't' find me, then kept looking for flying CCs in the corner or whatever. I made this drag on for over 20mins before they started just leaving, so i won the match while totally losing, and my team was just dying in chat at the ridiculousness of it. Even then, I didn't even get all that much salt from the enemy, just annoyance and frustration. I had another match were all i had left were infestors, back when they still made infested marines and the map was totally mined out and i just slowly wittled the enemy down with my .. 4-5 infestors until i won... even though i lost almost everything at that point... still not any significant salt...

I always say GG, and yeah I check the replay to understand how I lost, what my opponent did and how could I improve, because like WhiteRa said "More GG More Skill", so each lost game is a clear replay to check my own mistakes specially on games I felt I was winning or there were no way to lose. Sometimes I got some crazy guy like those but it is weird, I think the most common is the "EZ" from people feeling their paycheck is based on his GSL placement and still playing against a mid scrub ladder for some points when I take it as a game

I think the reason people lash out this hard in games is because they're already going through a shit time, playing games is their outlet and when playing games starts adding to their stress rather than relieving it (for example getting dommed in starcraft), they just say all kinds of horrible shit to dump their negativity on someone else. It's likely we're both reading too much into it but you're bang on that it's an interesting thought lol
@sideways5153
@sideways5153 9 ай бұрын
I mean there is something to be said for the fact that tying MMR or a player vs player win screen to your happiness is an indication of a poorly chosen outlet. Nobody having a rough time should be putting themself in a headspace where they need to be better than someone else in order to feel okay. Challenging yourself can be great for your mental health, so many people talk about Dark Souls or learning a martial art as something that helped them through really tough times, but it’s sad to see some people just spiral out by trying to seek solace in places they won’t find it. I hope more people can get outta the rut an unhealthy mindset puts them in, y’know? Nobody deserves to be miserable.

I don't talk crap on Starcraft but I did in a game called Caesary. As long as you dont go overboard and bring race or get personal it can be used effectively to throw your opponent off. When your opponent is mad or doesn't like you, they tend to make more mistakes and play on emotion rather than sound strategy.

Got a weird rage story: So I am in versus ai waiting for buddies. Get a match. Match starts I typ GlHf. Nothing. Then he typs the same. Followed by my bad, I'm new. Me: Np Then he almost exactly does what Pig discribes as 1 of the terran tactics, and on time as well. Marines, some marauders, medivacs and a few sieges. All good it seems. Then it happens, all of a sudden he starts cursing. But not at me, AT HIMSELF. WHY? Cuz he fucks up his buildorder. He wanted to stay bio but made the we rong buildings 2 armory a third starport. So he's going full meltdown. I try to calm his ass down. And tell him that: 1: It's vs ai so your trying new tactics or just training for ladder. 2: You have me your teammate to help you if you fuck up. And 3: THIS IS OUR FIRST MATCH, WERE VS VERY EASY AI. He didn't say anything the whole match anymore and haven't seen him since. So TeoJ-something if ya see this I hope yout doing great on ladder 🤣. I have seen guys go with F or shit if they fuck up, but never a full meltdown at something as small as build order and then going full tilt at themselfs. SC2 man shits wild.

One aspect of this phenomena is that video games appeal to people with ADHD because it allows them to enter a hyperfocus state. When you put them in a losing position, suddenly they lose their hyperfocus and this is very disruptive to a person with ADHD. Games are one of the few places in life where they can easily enter a state of focus, which is why they are so satisfying. Another difficult symptom of ADHD is emotional dysregulation. So you've broken their hyperfocus which causes negative emotion and then they have difficulty controlling that emotion and their subsequent behavior in the wake of it. While this behavior should not be condoned, I think it is worthwhile to look at the psychological roots behind it and give the benefit of the doubt to people who may just be lashing out in their suffering. Part of why I love this series is that you humanize it and acknowledge this is a real person to be understood instead of writing it off as a one-dimensional asshole who should be shamed for his behavior. Giving the benefit of the doubt opens the door for apologies and forgiveness. All the love, PiG!

It's the nature of hyperbole on the internet. Once people stop getting reactions out of threating to, "[demonitized] you in your orifice!" then they have to find a new way to express ever greater levels of threat/rage. The worst thing a raging person can feel is that they're not being taken seriously, so they have to find something to get the sort of reaction they want. Which is why the best response is always just to laugh at them, because nothing removes a person's power more than being the butt of a joke.

Entitlement is what you're looking for. The raging ones are highly likely younger individuals who has grown up getting most things they point at. They are probably having a fairly easy time in most other things they do in life, like school, sports, higher education, etc. They have been taught that they are "successful" without really having to put any work into it. At the same time, they have never really had to suffer any real consequences when showing a bad manner. In other words, they are spoiled brats who can't take that the majority of people they play against are better at something than they are. Thanks for a great channel by the way. I used to be toxic piece of shit back when I used to play games on the ranked ladders. Never held myself accountable and things I could've done differently. When I lashed out, it was meant to be disrespectful, but I never insulted family members or anything. I was much tamer with my insults, but the amount of trash talking I did was nearly every match or game regardless of win or loss. As with all younger people, I think ego and "knowing-it-all" is a big part of what creates that mindset, and a lot of it was moving past that and realizing I don't know it all whatsoever. Nowadays I'm just chilling with more things going on in my life that takes precendence over video games. I still play ranked, but I always look at what I can improve and do better in my next game. I've thankfully moved past that phase, I do banter with friends and opponents but it's all in good fun.

Hi PiG! Great stuff! I was wondering if u have any advice on builds for practicing with certain units? For example, it'd be awesome to know of a modern, optimized storm r ush build. Or some sort of good build for practicing sentries that isn't from like 2014 immortal sentry all in video where the build order still is reliant on mothership core. Now that SC2 is "figured out" by everyone, it seems like new players don't have any good builds / build order or updated guides. I know I can find don't crazy modern pro builds online but they are so niche and often are focused on micro intensive stuff like warp prism archons or some crazy timing of warp gate chrono plus blink. I'm trying to play something that isn't just me being put at huge disadvantage cuz I'm practicing with some trash storm rush build I made up on my own. I thought It'd be awesome to have a service where I could pay someone in like high master league or something to write me some decent build orders that I could practice specifc strat but also not so niche that I'm not working on my normal transferable Fundamentals.

Also I definitely grew up on the internet in the era of it being very toxic and everyone saying horrific shit to eachother cause it was to someone nameless. I started playing SC1 when I was 6, CSGO when I was 9 and in CS I’d say some horrendous shit to people because the culture of the games at the time was very toxic and it was just the standard, as a kid you just absorb whatever it is you are consistently getting thrown at you and the defense mechanism (online at the time) was just to try being even more over the top until the other person just stopped replying. I think people of my age group (young 20’s) have grown out of that as it’s like damn. I shouldn’t have grown up hearing slurs, typing slurs, getting called horrific things, getting death threats to my home address from people who can doxx, etc. it was just the unfortunate happenstance of my generation. There are, of course, the basement dwellers who haven’t touched grass this month and never grew out of it because “it’s just a joke, bro” when we all know they’re absolutely fuming about their life in general and just trying to drag someone else down.

I don't know man. Some fucked shit gets said online once in a while, but it's not like someone on the other side of the globe can do shit to you, so I don't really see the problem (when it's enemies in games saying shit like that). Laugh in their face, take your win, and have a good day.

I've BM'd on the ladder before. Not proud of it but will admit it. Never any slurs or anything horrible like that just stuff "you are terrible I should have won, learn a real build, EZ EZ EZ", stuff like that It was almost always because of outside factors. Stress from work, personal issues, etc... that had me in a bad headspace before even hitting the ranked button. And then I'd put all my self-worth into the game. The losses then feel like a reflection of my own failing as a human and the gut reaction is to lash out. That's why I did it.

A theory for toxicity (In Korea mainly) is high levels of stress from work or school and they use video games as a vent to their frustrations. Watching Korean LoL the amount of "momdie?" ive seen in games is impressive in how unoriginal it is

At times I get sour in CO-OPs, when a juvenil is deliberate selecting an OP commander like Tychus in Lone Wolf, plays deliberate for a high score, ignores patrols, and constantly has a unit aside of my units to scam kills of me. For me it feels like a waste of time, when I try to have some entertainment and I'm used to serve the other player as dummy for his ego run. CO-OP went down the drain, when commanders got introduced, that don't require resource management or micro of their units any more. The core values of a good RTS game got diluted, and often the players playing these kind of OP commanders deliberate do it to get an ego kick or are seeking recognition in a video game. There are also the stealth commanders, that often show players with a narcistic love for the stealth game play, ignoring the rest of the tasks. It makes me feel as if I suppose to run behind these people and do the clean up for them. I consider CO-OP as a team play, where players augment each other. To often I cross path with pushy players, attempting to patronize me. Often they justify their actions with the phrase "I'm helping you, you are soo slow, I already cleared the first wave" etc., when I ask them the reason for their behavior. The conversation turns sour, when I turn down their help, mention the OP commander they play, and ask them to be modest, humble. Then it's getting toxic fast.
Please be kind🙏
