Straighten Converging Verticals (in camera)

Converging verticals is when something you know is upright appears to bend together and get thinner in your picture. it can look really cool as an effect - but what if you don't want it?
You can buy a specialist lens called a shift lens which you can adjust to straighten converging verticals and you can straighten them with software, but there straighter you can get them in camera when you take the photo - the easier it is to tweak them later.
Convergence is caused by the camera's sensor not being parallel to whatever it is you're photographing. It often isn't possible to get completely parallel and that's why software is so brilliant. As you look up or down onto something the distance between it and your camera sensor varies from top to bottom - causing converging verticals.
If you can move back and extend your focal length so the angles decrease and the convergence decreases along with it. (need to know more about focal lengths and what they can do? come see us at www.photography...)
For this example I chose the spot very carefully so I could move back - but the principal remains the same...

I worked at a techpub firm where, for one job, we had to document dozens of electronics cabinets the size of refrigerators (for a military satellite downlink facility). The photos were all taken from a standing position, which meant the cabinets all looked wider at the top. To crop the image as much as possible and maximize the images on the page we used Photoshop to remove perspective. The verticals were all parallel - but the images were kind of wonky; the trays the electronic components were mounted on looked as though they were tilted up at the back. The customer didn’t notice.

Yes - we've been shooting these for over two years and have a lot more of them. They used to be available only to members on our site - but it wasn't working as a business, so we're going to let everyone have access to them for free and earn revenue from the ads instead.

You're right Richard. It's very complex the more you dig into it. If you over compensate in post the building looks squashed so I think it's always best to go for natural looking convergence rather than try and lose it completely. I know this will invite questions from readers like what is natural? The only answer I can give is to do what artists do and spend time really looking at your surroundings and you'll begin to notice what looks OK and what doesn't.

When you explain it so simply it becomes obvious, but I have many images such as the first one where things are unpleasantly skewed. Thanks for this tip; another great tool for the camera bag and it doesn't take up any space!

I went on a painting course and we were taught how to 'measure' the subject to sketch in outlines etc. I was amazed at the amount of convergence that exists in 'real life' and I'd never noticed. So, in my opinion, you need to understand exactly what source viewpoint you wish to recreate otherwise your 'corrected' picture will look strange (especially if you do this in post production). It explains why a skyscraper I took in Miami (and corrected for convergence) actually doesn't look right.

Absolutely spot on Mike. Unfortunately, in commercial architectural photography, one often runs out of open space before they are able to correct the Keystone effect, necessitating a TS lens. As you say, they aren't cheap. Just as an FYI, Rokinon builds an excellent 24mm TS lens for about 1/3 of the price of the others.

Thank you. There isn't really a best lens for buildings. You have to experiment with the focal length and balance getting it all in with moving further back to help lessen the convergence. If you're really into architecture then you can invest in a Tilt Shift lens but they're a shed load of money. And by tilt shift i mean the specialist lens not the miniaturization photo effect which has taken that name.

It could be they are using spot focusing and are telling the camera where they want to focus, locking in that focus then re composing to what they want the photo to look like - or possibly the same with spot metering. Hope this helped...

Hi Miriam. I don't use lens caps because I always forget to take them off when I'm in a hurry but I do clean the lens a lot, just a huff of breath and a quick wipe with a lens cloth. I don't often get dust on the sensor because I don't often take lenses off. I use two identical bodies with a different length zoom on each. a 18-70 and a 70-200.

Really great video as always. But I actually prefer when a light house or similar building is skewed. Like you said, creates more drama. But very well explained why it's happens. It's much easer to get what you want, when you know why. Skewed pictures can be nicer than normal pictures, depence on the subject. That's what so nice about photography. There are no rules, just guidelines.

I would quess that he is setting his focus point. For example, Set your cameras AF Point to the center point only. Place your AF point on the part of the scene/subject you want to make sure is in focus and half press the shutter and keep it held there. Whilst still holding the shutter, move your camera to compose your image (by move i dont mean walk somewhere else and take the image, you must remain on that spot and try to keep the camera on the same plane. This should ensure proper focus.

Very good video, but I'm surprised you didn't mention another option: use a wide-angle lens on a camera that's parallel to the structure from the very beginning. That way, you don't have to keep moving so far from the lighthouse to get the camera sensor closer to parallel with the structure. In many, many instances, moving backwards (or upwards) is impractical. Yes, you'll get lots of useless foreground with the wide-angle lens, but that's easily cropped, and today's high-megapixel cameras allow our images to retain sharpness after considerable cropping. Your thoughts?
