Stranded in Paradise. Tracked Jeep to the Rescue!

While trying to cross a sloped and snow covered road, this Toyota Tacoma slid off the low side and over the edge. The driver hiked out and a got a motel room for the night, and the next day I picked him up and we headed out to get it. The tracked @Jeep had no problems getting into position on the snow, and between the @harborfreight winch and @YankumRopes, it was a very simple recovery of
pulling him back onto the road, then towing him out.

Good your dad is okay and picking himself back up. My pops is 73 and still thinks he can do things like he’s still in the Marines. He’ll most likely just keel over while working literally in the back 40 of his 150 acre ranch he bought for retirement. He’s happy; therefore, if he goes out that way, I’ll be thankful because he never wants to waste away in a hospital bed or care facility.

@@garlandremingtoniii1338 My great grandfather did the same. He was in his early nineties out working with his tractor dragging scrap iron out of the brush. A piece he was pulling dug in, swung up and hit him in the head. Makes me sad but glad, no pain or nursing homes, a long life that ended swiftly. May we all be so blessed.

My Dad was digging potatoes at 72 Y/O when he had a heart attack. Not a month later he had his extension ladder in the bucket of the loader and was up top picking pears "so they don't go to waste". He passed on 2 months before his 90th Birthday. I turn 70 in a couple months and hope I have 20 years left in me.

Good idea about using spikes over his shoes. Not sure when this happened but look up signs of concussion because even if he didn’t lose consciousness, he could still have one and there can be a bleed that doesn’t demonstrate symptoms until too late. Always best practice to get evaluated medically after a fall when the head hits a hard immovable object with force! Words of advice from old retired nurse.

A few years ago, I came across an F150 that had slid off an iced road. I stepped out to see if I could help ; the whole road was an ice rink. 10 weeks ago I slipped on ice in a customers driveway. My feet went out from under me, and I landed om my shoulders and then my head hit the ground. I went to the hospital thinking I had a concussion, but my head was ok. I fractured my T2 vertebra and got whiplash. I'm going to Physio therapy now to recover. I bought a pair of ice cleats the next day....... I know, closing the barn door after the horse left. But falls on ice can really do a lot of damage. Your dad should go for an X-ray at least!

I asked the doctor 4 weeks later what they meant by 'at least' and he said the x-ray hadn't extended any further. The good thing is he didn't seem to hit his head. He said he's never realized his feet could go over his head . . . that was on his way down.

Thanks for the post sir, much appreciated. Am sending good wishes for your father's health and wellbeing after clunking his skull on the ice/concrete! On another note, that looked like a trail addition of the Toyota Tacoma and if I remember correctly there is no rear locker nor crawl control available on that model affecting its ability to self-recover. Also, with those conditions some chains/socks and traction boards might have been a good option and allowed them to get out. Being prepared for the conditions is something I preach like gospel to all my friends and family~ Thanks again, hope it's a good week over across the mountains!

Way to go Casey. Another job well done. Having lived on a cattle ranch between Bend and Sisters as a teenager, I am familiar with how much snow and cold can happen in your country (negative 30 degrees F with a foot of snow one time). Would have been school at Redmond that day - but the transmissions on the buses wouldn't work. Please tell your dad to wear those shoe chains. We even get snow/ice/freezing rain at times here in the south hills of Eugene. Those shoe chains have saved my fanny several times just trying to get the mailbox.

I’m 74 and used to being active, walking several miles every day and going to the gym, hiking etc. Two weeks ago decided to try out a jungle gym, lost my grip and landed wrong on my right leg. Twisted the knee and probably tore my MCL. On crutches and waiting to get more imaging done. Not doing well with the inactivity. I understand how your dad doesn’t want to slow down. Casey your dad is one of us Generation X. He has a hard head and will never admit he's hurt. You need to treat it as a concussion and get him checked out. God bless

You should tell folks 'No charge for the tow, but tips Are appreciated'. Dad, be careful out there. I understand, I'm 67, we don't bounce like we used to and we darn sure don't bounce BACK like we used to.

Those ice spikes are super dangerous on hard tile floors like the grocery store, don't let your solution be his next head injury lol.

Casey, hope your dad is okay. Keep in mind that ice spike are like ball bearings on ceramic tiles if you follow though with the threat to make your dad wear them whenever outside the house and visit a store that has a tile floor.
