They still have the winch. It's a tough WARN winch, capable of pulling up to 18,000 pounds. But having a winch is no good if you can't anchor it anywhere, as the saying goes.
As the lieutenant failed to familiarize himself with the spare tire holder's workings, he couldn't manage to crank it down. He decides to unscrew the tire while it's still in position, hoping not to be crushed by it, relying on his reflexes. Meanwhile, for the past hour, Robin, the young scout rover, has been digging a large hole across the track, measuring 1.5 meters by 1.5 meters and 0.5 meters deep. The excavation amounts to 1.125 cubic meters of earth. During the short night, the lieutenant came up with the idea to bury the spare tire as a sort of an earth anchor. After all, it weighs 300 kilograms and has a diameter of about 1.4 meters. If buried deep enough, it should offer significant resistance for the winch. However, just getting it rolled forward over the hill from its position behind the truck requires the lieutenant to shovel a ramp; otherwise, the guys won't manage. The efforts of the past days have taken a toll on them. The loops of the recovery straps don't align precisely with the bottom of the tire when it falls into the pit. Under tension, the tire twists, causing the lifting strap to be on top. The soft sandy ground can't withstand the force, and the tire gets pulled out. Back to one says the lieutenant, starting all over again. The tire needs to be completely pulled out first, the loops repositioned, and more ramps need to be dug at the truck's front while placing boards underneath the tires. With God's help and after a long struggle, they will finally succeed in freeing the truck!
To make things clear about this situation: It was really bad luck! We were trying to find a passage between 2 highland roads and an Icelandic Ranger advised us to drive there - by saying: "yes, it's possible on the track and this truck goes anywhere anyways.."
But track conditions became worse - as I stayed on this desolate way - I got stuck. The track WAS already in a devastation condition, I did stay on this track as I didn't want to off road it to pass the impassable part..
No signal for mobile phones - and nobody since 2 days around..! What was our options?
So we dug it out for 4 days and turned around..
Shovel and wood we brought back to the shelter plus a good amount of alcohol we deposited there..
I completely respect nature - in this case we just worked on a track that was destroyed before!
Btw: 250m ahead the track ended anyways at impassable rivers..
Meanwhile new Volcano eruptions will straighten things out anyway..
Btw to think about: In Iceland, they had strict rules against leaving the marked paths or going off-road. Which is good. But then, right next to those regulated trails, a mountain would just nonchalantly burp out millions of tons of lava, wiping out entire valleys! It makes me question the whole notion of proportionality - where's the fairness in that, I wonder.
And if that wasn't enough, I cannot help but think about emissions. They were always telling people to save fuel and be eco-friendly, yet at the same time, this volcano was belching out massive amounts of sulfur dioxide and CO2 into the stratosphere, causing darkness over the northern hemisphere. It was a real irony - talk about proportionality gone out the window!

I've travelled Iceland's F-roads quite often, usually in a Landrover Defender. I've also driven MAN KATs off-road on military training grounds in Germany and abroad. The choice of vehicle for travelling is at your own liberty, as long as its use complies with regulations in Iceland. Based on the information you provide this appears to have been the case. I'm also well aware that sometimes one is just unlucky. However, it is more than obvious that a 13-ton Zetros is grossly oversized for Iceland. Ground pressure is an ambivalent argument. A Leopard II A7 battle tank can claim an even lower ground pressure (mass per square cm) than the Zetros. Forget about the irony - this incident certainly hasn't helped the reputation of tourists driving "off-road" vehicles with the local population. It may well trigger even stricter regulations at the national level which will affect an entire body of tourists to Iceland, not just yourself. Apart from all this, it was more than unnecessary to advertise your controversial experience by uploading this video to KZfaq. You've done the community a bad service ...

At least a voice that stands out from the general and undifferentiated storm of criticism! And yes, it was just bad luck and unforeseeable that we got stuck at that spot. (By the way, this wouldn't have happened if we had departed from the already heavily rutted path and driven on the vegetation cover next to it - which we didn't do due to regulations!) Unfortunately, there was no mobile network, and otherwise, there was no chance to get help. So, we had to dig ourselves out. The truck has a ground pressure of 1.08 kg/square centimeter at 2 bar tire pressure, which is not even bad! And no, the truck is not oversized either. All the tracks were very drivable, and there were no other problems. By the way, some of the Icelandic 'Superjeeps' are even wider than 2.5m! Also Freigraben.

I’m operating the truck on 13 tons as it’s not completely filled with water, diesel and gear. On the 16.00R20 tires and deflated down to 2.0bars, a tire has a contact area on the ground of 0,3 square meters - all tires together 1,2 square meters. So the pressure on the ground is 1,08kg/cm² which is not so bad. Also is the width of the truck 2,5m which is about the same or less as the heavily modified Icelandic super jeeps! The truck is neither too heavy nor too wide for F-roads! And again to make things clear about the STUCK situation: It was really bad luck! We were trying to find a passage between 2 highland roads and consulted an Icelandic Ranger. He advised us to drive there - by saying: “Yes, it's possible on the track and this truck goes anywhere anyways.." But track conditions became worse - still drivable, no problem. But finally as we stayed on this way - we got stuck suddenly. The track on this particular part WAS already in a devastation condition, still I did stay on this track as I didn't want to off road it to pass the impassable part.. No signal for mobile phones - and nobody since 2 days around..! What was our options? So we dug the truck out (took us 4 days, step by step) and turned around.. Shovel and wood we brought back to the shelter where we borrowed it from plus a good amount of alcohol we deposited there as a kind of payment to whom it may concern.. Absolutely not! it was really bad luck! In the beginning, an Icelandic Ranger specifically guided us to take this path when we inquired about a route connecting two highland roads. He provided clear instructions to follow this route. Additionally, it's important to emphasize that we never ventured into off-road driving. So, let me emphasize again: following our map, we naturally adhered to designated trails, which were further marked by wooden posts. Nonetheless, there were several locations where these wooden markers were missing. In such cases, we followed existing tracks on the terrain, essentially driving in areas where previous vehicles had traversed. Interestingly, as we progressed, additional markers would reappear. The landscape in the glacier region undergoes continuous changes due to river flows. Iceland might want to consider either closing off these routes or providing more visible signage to prevent people from getting disoriented or lost.

@peteruppert
@peteruppert 8 ай бұрын
Erstmal versucht man alles andere..
