We explore two strange abandoned structures.
A futuristic metal and concrete giant that stands 12 stories tall atop the highest mountain in the area. And a multimillion pound hospital that was abandoned half way through its construction. Take a look inside these other worldly and bizarre Croatian structures…
Petrova Gora was built in remembrance to those who fought bravely against the spread of fascism in world war two. Its panoramic views and peculiar shape captivates the mind, it truly feels like entering a space ship or some alien facility on a far away planet.
Built in 1981 on top of a mountain of the same name. “Petrova Gora” or “Peter’s Mountain” is also home to a system of underground chambers and tunnels which served as a secret field hospital during world war two.
As Croatia has changed, so has the meaning of their monument and it has been slowly losing its exterior metal, panel by panel, for years.
For some locals Petrova Gora is simply a convenient source of new building materials.
It remains now as an interesting tourist attraction and broadcasting tower, it has no real legal documentation and to destroy the huge concrete skeleton would take a lot of effort, meaning it will likely remain in this state for the foreseeable future…
The construction of this giant hospital began in 1982, it was designed to be the diamond of Croatian Hospitals, a triple function - hospital, hospice and spa.
Though in 1992 the construction of the hospital came to an abrupt end.
The Croatian war of independence began and took all the resources of the country.
Over 130 million pounds has been spent so far and it has been estimated to cost a further 420 million pounds to complete it.
It now stands, 1.5 kilometres long, a skeleton with half finished stairs and empty lift shafts.
This valuable site still awaits its fate…
