The germans making also a interesting steam locomotive with eight V-shaped engines (or four for one axle but the engines are fitted outside on the front of the wheels). The locomotive have the number 19 1001 and it was streamlined like the class 05 002.

THANKS FOR POSTING THIS AND DOING THE COMPUTER ANIMATION! THIS IS QUITE INTERESTING! I IMAGINE IT WAS A BIT OF A PIG TO DO HEAVY WORK TO THE MACHINERY UNDERNEATH THE BOILER AND BETWEEN THE WHEELS! IN MY EARLY DAYS ON THE AT&SF RR SHOP IN KANSAS CITY I GOT TO TALK WITH A PAIR OF EX UNION PACIFIC MACHINISTS THAT WORKED ON THE UNION PACIFIC 9000 CLASS 4-12-2 LOCOMOTIVES! THE MIDDLE CYLINDER WAS ATTACHED TO A SINGLE CRANK AXLE AND WORKING ON THE CENTER ROD AND BEARINGS WAS QUITE DIFFICULT! THIS TURNED OUT TO BE ONLY AN EXTENDED EXPERIMENT ON THE U.P. AS ONLY 10 OF THESE WERE BUILT! HOWEVER IT CAN BE SAID THAT WITH 3 CYLINDERS IT WOULD HAVE THE POTENTIAL TO MORE EASILY START A HEAVY FREIGHT TRAIN WIT THE CRANK PINS ON A 120 DEGREE ARRANGEMENT!

This maintenance nightmare is not much more complicated than the Shay, Climax, and Heisler types of geared locomotives used on logging railways. But geared engines are very slow compared to conventional locomotives.

Hannah Miyamoto Shays, Climax and Heisler’s are designed for power and traction rather than speed even though the top speed is 20-25 mph
@HSMiyamoto4 жыл бұрын
@@nathanchan4653 That was my point. Fortunately, because steam produces max torque at 0 MPH, no transmission or clutch is needed.

With the geared locomotives, especially Shays, the maintenance is eased considerably by the whole drive mechanism being exposed and accessible.

@@larrybrennan1463 How do British railroaders maintain an engine with an inside cylinder? Do they have to put the engine over a pit every time they want to check something? Inside cylinders are almost unknown in the U.S. Even when compound engines were popular -- before superheating -- the high pressure cylinders were usually on the outside, next to the low pressure cylinders.

One point - everyone always quotes p-bronze liners. I've no idea where this info came from originally but the drawings show the valves and liners were both cast iron so no differential expansion problems. There was a gun metal sealing strip sprung loaded from behind to seal the admission port so maybe this caused problems but the rotary valves and cut off liners were iron not bronze.
@Plokman0402 жыл бұрын
You have ti admit, it looked very neat. I wish to model this engine as a toy train in a project, Would of been nice to see her rebuilt as a conventional steam engine. May be wishful thinking but you never know without trying.

Those osclilating driveshafts and independent cylinders are a clever idea, no need for siderods but at the cost of increased weight. Great video!
@peckelhaze69346 жыл бұрын
Very interesting. The concept was quite a good idea but putting it into practice would have been near impossible due to the strict timing of the valves.
@simonwass63156 жыл бұрын
Walter Raleigh there was only 4 positions of cutoff and reverse had no facility to use the steam expansively. The gearbox is amazingly simple and considering the availability of turntables it could have worked, the turbo motive only had a reverse turbine powerful enough to get to turning facilities.

That's right, a technical background and understanding of basic principles on the working of steam engines is needed to understand the information. One thing still not clear from the animation however is if each cylinder operates individual or is paired with the slightly offset cylinder in a sort of opposing piston fashion, and if the rotary valves work in one of both ways. The drawing shown are to blurry to distinghuish this.
