Today's Question: Have you ever been lost in the wilderness? What happened? What did you do in order to survive?
"Survivor Type" is one of my all-time favorite short stories by Stephen King. If you haven't read it yet, you may want to check it out first and then watch our video / podcast presentation. You can find it in Stephen King's collection SKELETON CREW.
On this daring adventure into the macabre, our STRANGE RESORT podcaster George Hatfield journeys overseas, (from Saigon to Micronesia) attempting to retrace the steps of a disgraced doctor who was lost during the sinking of the Callas, back in the early 1970s.
But what really happened? A hidden diary may have all the answers... but do we really want to know the truth?
Music by Sir Cubworth ("Spying in the 60s")
Music by Kevin McLeod ("Laid Back Guitars")
Music by Doug Maxwell ("Ukulele Beach")
Music by Jesse Gallagher ("Maestro Tlakaelel")

This little story makes 127 Hours seem like just a picnic! There have been at least two film adaptations, and another adaptation as an episode of a TV anthology series, but that episode never aired. Not that I'm hungry for that stuff. I never watched any of it, but I figure it can't be half as bad as those Human Centipede movies.

"Survivor Type" is the first and, so far, only Stephen King story I've had to stop halfway through just to settle my stomach and get my breath. I was just not prepared for it. I'm an audiobook user as reading can be a challenge for me, and between the narrator and the actual story, it was just TOO much. I enjoy it more now that I know what's coming. I like to pair it with "Chattery Teeth." Go dark, then, go silly. And they both involve biting. (Kathy Bates narrates the Audible version of Chattery Teeth, BTW)

Not exactly lost, but I was heading towards a locally famous solstice thing, (Its out in the middle of the desert) and I had walked this I think twice before and now we (my family) were walking with family friends. Me and said friends were lagging behind while my family had walked on ahead. They asked me 'do you know where we are going?' and I looked up at them at the time a VERY young teen and pointed directly towards the proper rock fin. I felt very good that I was more intelligent than the adults then. Lol. Then going to a thing called 'the crack' or 'hidden kiva' locally we were hiking in from the bottom up and came across people that were going from the top down. We were VERY late getting to the top and those people had kindly stayed put to make sure we got out. I'll never forget that.

A pity that George Hatfield does not describe what happened when that child knocked on his window while he was staying at Tookey's Bar and Grill in Falmouth, MA. Or rather, what happened afterwards.... Was it Ralphie or Danny Glick, Richie Bodin or Ruth Crockett who wanted him to "let me in......" Disappointingly, he seems to have got away from 'Salem's Lot' unscathed.
