Matt's Off Road Recovery

4 жыл бұрын

We got a call for a Toyota Tacoma on Spring Drive, near the Toquerville Falls Road.
Something had broke in the front suspension, and it was causing interference between the tire and some of the suspension components.
It took a little bit of detective work to figure out what happened.
but now, how are we going to get this thing off the trail to an area where we can get it on the rollback?

I had a Jeep pickup once and I was doing something underneath it, but I was having a lot of trouble. (I have no idea what I was doing at the time, this was 40 years ago.) My wife hear me cussing up a storm and crawled under the Jeep with me. She looked at the problem that I was having, and said, "why don't you do this?" I almost yelled at her to get out of here, but I took a deep breath and then looked at her idea. It worked like a charm. I am soooo glad that I kept my tongue in check THAT time. @@Rat-Builder yes I have, I get out at least once a week. Since working from home I can sneak out a couple times a week. The reason why I called her a moron is because morons are unaware of the situation around them. If you’re on the trail first of all you know rocks and things protruding that specific angles can cause specific damage to specific areas of the vehicle. Like hitting the tire and wheel at the right spot or on the inside of the wheel where the shock mounts are or the transmission or axle hub and any other low lying parts. Somebody that is aware and going out in the middle of nowhere will understand the basic low parts of the vehicle. Then they will look at the route understanding that they can get stranded and then bad. Now a moron would simply drive around at high speed hitting rocks and whatever else because the vehicle and their understanding is some tool and it’s just going to go over and through things and then if Something Happens well Something Happens. And there are a lot of people like this but they are easy to see because you can just see their lack of understanding of the physical world around them. So yes. She is a moron. And Everything I listed is extremely very basic common sense. Even a very stupid person that would take the five minutes to think about it would be able to understand this. Why you believe you need to defend this king of idiots is a whole other question. And she has actually been on this guys videos before meaning she is a repeat retard. And she is an older adult which implies a certain level of competence in basic though processes.

I got yelled at at a dealer where I had bought e NEW car with sub standard plug caps, of which half disintegrated on my way home on the highway one dark night. I pulled over, looked around and found a nice bunch of old fencing wire, with which I replaced all the ht wires - and made sure nothing touched where it shouldn't! I told that steel bands worked fine in the old days, so why not now - and what would he have done in the middle of the night, hours from anything if he was a mechanic with a broken down pos. You're a mechanic? You know what you did?!? he asked. Yes, I'm a mechanic, and I believe i knew what I did, since this bodge job got me home. He was all smiles after that.

Ghetto trail repairs are my favorite! I was a spectator on my favorite one, but there was a guy with a severely bent tie rod. They bent it back straight as much as possible, but it looked pretty weak where it bent. They used about 20 steel cable ties to strap a crow bar to it like a splint. Got him off the trail haha. I've gone over some rocks that I was like "this is gonna be rough", then I glide over it. Then others look like nothing and you go for a ride. Just cut the corner a bit...it happens.

To be very fair here, can be hard to see shit like that rock at the side of a tight corner on a trail, kind of all the same color and blind spots around truck can be several feet away from the corner. If your not familiar with the trail or don’t do a lot of off-roading successfully it’s pretty easy to slam into seemingly obvious stuff because you missed it. Give the fact this person seems slightly unaware they hit a specific rock and just heard horrendous noises or so they claim to me says A; not familiar with off-roading, B; genuinely had little idea what they hit or if they hit anything.. this won’t validate any warranty claim any differently. A bent arm typically won’t be warrantied weather that’s for the best or the worst if it’s bent or sheered in central location warranty won’t be upheld on that specific item. Bent arms indicate you smacked into something with force. If it sheered where the bolt attaches then you have a better chance at a warranty as long as it isn’t also bent… the bend is key.

I was a mechanic in the army. It’s called BDAR, battlefield damage assessment and repair. We trained on how to repair it with whatever we could find to limp it back to our motorpool. I’ve used tape on radiator hoses, 550 cord for belts, I once laced a tire sidewall with safety lacing wire and a bunch of tire repair kits and glue and got it home. And drove a 6x6 cargo truck with a tire missing and the axle chained to the frame. You do what ya gotta do to get it back.

Never weld a wheel with the tire mounted, valve core in or not, air expansion happens so fast many people have been seriously injured.
@johngaltline9933
@johngaltline9933 3 жыл бұрын
while I tend to agree it's not a good idea for anything meant to last, even if you heated the entire wheel to a thousand degrees, the tire would melt before the pressure change would be dangerous. never mind just heating a small portion of the steel raising the total air volume by maybe a hundred degrees if they really took their time with it. even if the tire was at working pressure, say 50 psi, it would only be at 60 psi after heating.
