Strange USA Canada Border : Exploring Peace Arch Park

Peace Arch Park may be one of the most unusual places in the world. It sits on the USA-Canada Border, and spans the two countries. There is also a portion of the park which is bordered by Canada on the north by only a ditch between the two countries. Stepping across the ditch to Canada is an illegal border crossing for US citizens. At the center of the park is the Peace Arch Monument. It is situated near the westernmost point of the Canada-United States border in the contiguous United States, between the communities of Blaine, Washington and Surrey, British Columbia. Construction of the 20.5-meter (67 ft) tall arch was headed by American lawyer Sam Hill and dedicated in September 1921.

You are more blessed on the Canadian side because ot the free health care system. I like the USA but concerning social things they are way behind many other states. As long as you are healthy there is no problem but when you have even something simple like Diabetes or asthma and no health insurance you have a big problem. So I prefer Canada, not only because of the better health care system.

@@derrickforealI live in Canada and my brother lives in the States and he definitely misses Canadian universal health care and yes of of course we pay for it with our taxes (nothing is free in life) but the point is you don’t pay at the hospital or at doctors office and no Canadian ever went bankrupt because they couldn’t pay their medical bills……Sadly America is the only industrialized country without universal health care (and yes I know we have our problems in Canada but I still wouldn’t switch systems)

Interesting border situation. I live in Detroit which Downtown sits less than 2 miles north of Downtown Windsor, Ontario and at least that is separated by a river. They are also currently building another bridge that will have biking and walking access between the countries so that will be interesting. Also being so close to the border some Apps will think you're in Canada even though you're in the US like occasionally Google Maps will show hotels prices in CAD instead of USD for example.

The ditch is quite startling. Just a reminder that even though everything looks the same on both sides of the border, people are innocently going for a walk or walking their dogs, kids playing in the park, looks like a regular suburban all American neighborhood - but if you cross the ditch, you will suffer ramifications as even though everything looks similar, innocent and peaceful, we are still divided by borders and countries that keep us separate. Just like animals in the wild who are territorial, we as human beings also mark our territory. The subtleness of the ditch is almost more disturbing than putting up something like a wall or razor linked fence, just because it's such a gentle reminder. Kind of creepy really.

Yes I've been to Peace Arch Park several times, it's very nice in my humble opinion. It's OK to cross the border just as long return to your country. The "moat" is just plain silly, but quite important in that it is a deterrent for vehicles that want to cross the border illegally.

Does anything like this exist on the boarders with Quebec and NY, VT, NH and ME? It seems that the Canadian govenment in the east are much much much stricter about things like this.

As long as you remain within the park. So technically you are in the "foreign country" but can't access any of it outside of the park until you cross the official border crossing. Think of it this way, when you drive across the Peach Bridge or Rainbow Bridge in Niagara Falls, when your car comes to the middle of the bridge you have technically entered the "foreign country" without permission from them until several feet/meters later when you get the the border booths. Same if you walk across the bridge at Niagara Falls. You've technically entered the foreign country without permission and are in the foreign country, but can't really access any of it until you talk to the border guards located several feet/meters into the country.

When I watch this I recognize how simple it is in Europe without borders. You can just walk or drive through different countries without restriction, fences or control. There still exists a border police somehow but not like in other countries. I feel very free and priviledged with this now. The only thing is that the police of the different countries must work together better than in other countries with borders to avoid a lawless zone. 😅

We would walk across the US border and go to the Blaine marina where the boat was moored. Then sail it to Ocean Park waters in Semiahmoo Bay (all Canadian Waters) and spend the day fishing/crabbing. Traps were landed in BC and then we went back to the US to moor the boat and for the long walk home. I oh so loved that life.

There was a guy who was thinking that if you have to stop at the Border, it can't be open. Let me explain what a closed Border is. During the time of COVID, it was closed to most of us, except for essential workers and Truckers so it was more or less closed. Another way to explain the difference between an open one and a closed one is when no one is allowed to enter, period. Having to stop at a Border is for the country you are entering wants to know if you are Admissable, that is all. During COVID it was in a way closed but only for those who had no specific reason, like tourism to cross.

just FYI there are no fences between the U.S. and Canada border in general, this is not special for the Peace Arch border. the difference is just that you can legally cross. also the rule is that all nationals can enter the park and move freely on both sides as long as they leave on the side they entered from. it used to be generally accepted to „go through immigration“ just after leaving the park on the other side with your passport and while that might still be possible it is not the way it’s supposed to work.

Pretty sure anyone going into this park can visit the park on either side. They just have to either come back the way they came or clear customs for proper entry. Technically when you’re at the peace arch and south of it you’re in the Washington state park side and when you’re north it’s the peace arch provincial park. People may be able to cross into the Canadian side here? I’ve done this three times. Took public transit to Blaine walkers through the park like you did walked through the border went to CBSA there and walked to white rock. I also chickened out of taking greyhound once back to Seattle and did this southbound. If you are in Blaine where the underpass is you’ll see a do not enter sign. That’s where walk throughs from us customs go. Good idea to have ID. border patrol and CBSA do have a strong presence here especially on the us side. If you leave in a different country than you started please do check in. The CBSA office is just north on the sidewalk so pictured and the USA CPB office is south of this point. Follow the signs.

The atmosphere at the US-Canada border looks more relaxed and friendly than my home in Texas on the US-Mexico border , I live in Nye , Anna ave street . My house is near the Rio Grande River. Just open the back door and see Nuevo Laredo Mexico.The border here is only a river separating the two borders 😁😁😄😄😄

You need to go to the Haskell Library that literally sits on the border between Derby Line, Vermont and Stanstead, Quebec. The border is marked inside the library and Canadians and Americans can cross freely inside. Just that Canadians can't exit the American side and Americans on the Canadian side.

I wonder how many of the cars/people passing you by were border patrol. The one honda minivan went down to the end, backed up in a driveway, and then went past you as the woman in the well put together cold weather walking outfit walked by.

@antikommunistischaktion
@antikommunistischaktion 6 ай бұрын
Your phone won't switch right at the border as there is some bleed over with carriers. For example when I was visiting Niagra Falls on the Canadian side my phone was locked into T-Mobile very reliably and only switched back to a Canadian carrier when I was a good ways on QEW (I was already in Canada at the time I entered from Windsor).

In Wyoming, they discuss a bill which would allow ‘physical force’ to ‘terminate’ suspected trespass. By comparison, these park rules are like nothing. At least you can't be shot legally by crazy land owners while walking around 'suspiciously' close to the border line.
