A couple of years ago I accidentally stumbled upon a study which provided the answer to that question. There's apparently a direct correlation between the submissive gender role women in North American societies are taught from a young age, the ideological expectations of what is considered feminine, and a woman's voice pitch. Women who were brought up with a lot of self confidence, who were raised to be strong, independent people tend to develop a significantly lower pitched voice compared to, oversimplified, girls who were raised to become accessories to some random men. It's incredibly interesting because you'd think that the voice pitch is a natural phenomenon, but it mostly isn't. Of course it's not only the pitch, though, it's also about expression and other stuff, for example instead of saying, "Oh my God!", they say, "Oh my Goood-eh!" I'm sure there's a term for that ending but I didn't study _English_ linguistics, and in my language this stuff doesn't exist. The relationship between sociolinguistics and gender roles seems to be a lot deeper in English than what I know from my native language.
