I've been saying this for years. We were doing very similar systems that did the same damn thing as the modern "AI" systems, although with a much smaller data set back in the late '80s at a defense contracting company (in this case, systems that capture and translate intercepted radio transmissions). The whole thing fit on two standard military five-ton trucks - and consider the size of hard drives back then. But it worked, for what it was _specifically built for_ . And we sold it to _foreign countries_ . Which means the US military already considered it obsolete. Think about that for a minute. The basic algorithmic system is essentially the same; it's just working with a vastly larger data set. Since we don't even know what "general intelligence" *is* , I see no true path in this direction that leads to "GAI". We may *never* achieve that goal.
