I spent 3yrs in strangeways for defending myself. I should of let them beat me to death because strangeways was a living hell. All I wanted to do was my time and leave to never return. But I soon realised that I had to fight for my life in there. Unfortunately for me I ended up on one of the worst wings in the prison full of animals that wanted to shank me. I was cut 17 times by 11 different inmates. But you soon learn not to grass if you want to live. When I finally got out I wasn’t just physically scarred I was mentally scared. 25 yrs later and I still have the same nightmares. Stay out of jail!

How on earth can you have been hated that much? Not being funny but I've done 11 different jails on about 4 sentences and only had 3 fist fights in YOI in pre arranged fights nobody ever stabbed me up and I'm talking 11 different jails. I didn't know nobody going in so it's not like I had lads from the manor backing me. Sorry you had bad luck but ffs that's way too much bad luck if so many people had it in for you. There were lads getting done over but they were acting shady like trying to get single-cell locations blagging health reasons when there were waiting lists etc or people stealing or debt heads.

If your story is true, which I find hard to believe in both how you describe what you were sentenced for and what happened while in prison, there was more than likely a reason for it. If you truly went in and kept your head down and was no bother to anyone and kept yourself to yourself there's no way in hell you were hated like that. There's a lot here you're leaving out (again, if indeed your story is even partly true).

He was eventually diagnosed with BPD and got medication and therapy. He's been released for 15 years and has not reoffended. This is the case for a lot of criminals locked up, they can be helped and treated then released to become a contributing member of society, rather than a burden and danger. Sadly mental health services are not being adequately funded, which ends up costing the tax payer a lot more when people who need help commit crime.

The simple truth here as it is obvious to see, is that most of these prisoners have no idea what they want, how to go about normal life or even express themselves in a rational way. Half were a danger to themselves or others and needed the constant supervision of men who are physically much bigger and more disciplined than them in order to maintain some kind of order in their lives. Why we let "Society" unpick all of this and then paint all prisoners as victims and all screws as bullies is beyond me.

Neither the TV nor the "snacks"-are guaranteed. You can buy stuff with yr wages, twice a week if yr lucky, but if you smoke you won't be able to afford them (or yr burn probably.) The TV is like no TV you have seen and only gets three or so channels. You may have to obtain a piece of wire (contraband) for the aerial. Then you can enjoy discussing with yr padmate (or mates if yr 3 to a cell) what to watch. Btw, you take a shit in yr cell, whether there's people in there or not. Same in Armley mate When I was on D wing as a Y.O, the screw would take their work boots off and put on a pair of slippers, before creeping to lads pads and smashing fk out of them. They even enabled men like Paul Sykes to rape the some young offenders in Armley. The screws tried to cover for each other but eventually a few dozen of them got arrested and convicted for their brutality, and all but 1 was banned from working on the wings again. The one screw who was allowed to walk THROUGH the wings, but not work on them, is a huge bear of a cunt we all called viking. Absolutely hated, that man, and most screws from this era. The 80s were no better. Lads were killed by screws in Armley, and other prisons all across England, and I hate them with a burning hatred, but a Scottish screw in Armley called Mr Matthews (if I remember rightly) was the one who stood up to the "slipper squad" of rabid screw bullies, and told the bizzies all about it. That man was still revered in Armley in 2012, when I last went, as a visitor. Not all screws are wrong uns, and some of them are genuine decent men, with real honour, but far too many screws in the 80s simply watched on as sadistic gangs of violent screws beat young lads half to death at random.

I agree with you, entirely - I bet those officers were all backing each other up at the detriment of the welfare of those prisoners - WHAT HOPE HAD THEY GOT IN A PLACE LIKE THAT???
