NEW DELHI: One year after the Galwan clash, the standoff between India and China continues in eastern Ladakh though partial disengagement has taken place. If Galwan was a game-changer where India gave it back to China, there was another incident 35 years ago when India stood firm and displayed aggressive intent against Chinese intrusion in Arunachal Pradesh. India quickly mobilised troops, just like it did in Ladakh last year, and signalled to the China that it was ready for a fight. In this episode of ‘Simply Nitin’, StratNews Global Editor-in-Chief looks back at what happened in Sumdorong Chu in June 1986.

You hit the nail on the head - they are bullies. They will attack if they think they are a lot stronger and they will back off if the adversary has an even chance. In one word, they are cowards.

I still remember when Sumdurung Chu happened. I remember the public differences between General Sundarji and Rajiv Gandhi. General Sundarji was the most daring General Independent Indian Army ever had. He was also the architect of Operation Brasstacks. General Sundarji was the Indian version of General Erwin Rommel. Had he been in charge today we would have recaptured some of the Indian territory lost to China in 1962.

SSB was the Special Service Bureau now known as the Sashastra Seema Bal.SIB is the Subsidiary Intelligence Bureau, not quite the same as SSB. It was Inspector Pemba Bhutia with whom I served as Medical Officer in SSB's Group Centre in Dirang who first detected the PLA incursion in Sumdorong Chu

For Indian armed forces the biggest drag has been the political leadership and its diplomats. 1962 included.

Brilliant channel Nitin, I have been flowing you since my teenage years. Always a delight to watch you speak. Very well researched, good old patriotism and no hubris or jingoism like Republic TV. I greatly admire and respect you for your effort towards authenticity & accuracy, being pro-India while not being hateful against anyone.

"Huang Guozhi, senior editor of Modern Weaponry magazine, has said that the world’s largest and most experienced country with plateau and mountain troops is neither the US nor Russia but India. India has the world’s largest and most experienced troops trained for high-altitude battles, a military expert affiliated with China’s leading maker of equipment for the People’s Liberation Army (PLA) has said, adding that mountaineering is an “essential skill” for each Indian soldier deployed in the mountains."
