Straw bale gardening can be a great solution for planting vegetables in poor soil or dry climates. After first preparing the soil by planting nitrogen fixing plants, we're now moving to the next step of starting garden beds on our abandoned off grid homestead in Spain; and we're using straw bale garden beds to do it.
Thank you for following our journey.
¡Un gran abrazo desde Smithsdale Farm!

[ABOUT US]
We're Danny and Kate. In 2015 we moved from the UK to Barcelona, and after 8 years enjoying the busy city and sunny beaches we moved to the mountains to start a new adventure. We'll be renovating a town house, building an off grid cabin, restoring an old stone house and farming 12.5 acres of land with regenerative agriculture and permaculture practices in Catalunya, Spain.

Sometimes gardening can feel like one step forwards, two steps back. Trees will often shed their leaves prematurely when they are under stress. We had a drought last summer and our very mature copper beach shed all of it's leaves to reduce loss of water through the leaves. This year it's fine. Also, plants are more vulnerable to pests when they are under stress due to either too little water, or in the UK it can be too much water. Your almond tree hasn't had chance to grow roots that go deep enough to get enough water its self. As other people have said, keep watering and feeding it and it should be fine next year. Although all gardeners suffer losses, by giving the almond some TLC it should be fine xxxx

Feed the “leafless”tree, then keep it well watered. I think you will be pleasantly surprised just how well it will recover! It’s always disheartening when that sort of thing happens, it’s totally out of your control which doesn’t help! ❤

Oh my goodness those bugs! We have only planted a fig tree this spring, like yours this one has been bug free but the last time we went up the tree had almost fallen because of the wind! Several leaves were damaged badly. I hope we managed to prop it up better last time, we'll see this weekend when we go back! I will try the soapy water treatment on an olive tree where I saw some (what I think is) woolly aphid. Can't wait to see your straw bale plants!

Good luck with your fig tree. They seem to be quite good at surviving harsh conditions so fingers crossed yours will be fine 😊🤞🏻

Your almond tree looks good. Don't worry about how it looks. It will recover next year. Your trees need to focus its attention on growing roots not leaves or fruit. The tips of the branches are green>>that means its alive. Also, someone recommended neen oil for insect control. I second that.

Oh that would break my heart to see an infestation like that. However, the almond may come good and end up being stronger. All the best.
