Yes, indeed! These people are crazy about sitting back telling other people how to fix something that is done just fine. My daddy taught me how to paint and I wouldn't dare criticize someone else's techniques if the finished product actually looks perfect.

I have been in the residential, commercial & industrial construction trades including painting for 35 years. I have had my own restoration company for 8 of those years mainly as far as painting doing residential. I don't own a sprayer and never have sprayed except out of a spray can. I am a brush & roll guy and that's the way I like it. I personally don't like that so called "Factory" finish. It looks fake to me and looks like a robot did it instead of someone's hands. I like craftsmanship. When I look at something that has been built or even painted I want to see the detail of knowing someone spent the time with their hands and know-how along with their experienced craftsmanship in building something and not looking at it thinking it was put together in a factory and had that fake factory look and feel to it. What you did here was absolutely beautiful, and you did it without a sprayer. Keep up the good work. You are amazing!

A tip I just saw on a video-I tried it out and it worked! Place a thin nylon knee high or one of the booties they have for trying on shoes, over a foam brush-pull snug. Brush on acrylic topcoat. For some reason the nylon stops the bubbles created when using polyacrylic. It was a very smooth finish.

My mother has that same exact dresser. You got that dresser at a BARGAIN at $80 for a solid wood dresser. She paid $800 in the 1990s for that dresser. Anyway, I like what you did with the dresser. You gave it a modern look and a second life without breaking it apart. What’s nice is if that original style (Colonial) gets back in vogue, it’s easy to strip and refinish and put the original hardware back on the drawers.

OH MY GOODNESS, SO GLAD I FOUND THIS VIDEO! I literally work out in the field all the time, and never have time to do those 'projects I'd like to get done’ things done. I have so many of those I'm keeping that for a project items around, that now those project ideas and items have gone from days to years. Yet the furniture remains the same, Led Zep pun ha-ha. But for me, it's true, the items do remain, like in my garage, just collecting and waiting. THEN, some free time comes. A couple days off, a vacation, etc., and my 'now I can get it done thinking' begins. So I start my research, and before you know it, I end up exhausted watching too many videos, seeing too much info, on 'best this' or 'best that', AND before you know it, I've spent MORE TIME researching, even purchasing materials to do these projects, and I don't get anything done, and the time keeps slipping away. It's like it takes MORE time to find the BEST way for yourself & what works for you, than ACTUALLY getting the project completed. You spent roughly 4 hours time on getting this piece done and for that I say wow, incredible! The piece looks well done, beautiful and gorgeous! I wish I could get back a lot more hours than that of my time done on researching how to paint furniture. So, now it’s September 2022, and I’m googling again. From search terms like black stain, to can I turn any furniture piece black, to quickest way to paint furniture black. And then I find your precious gem, pearl of wisdom video in KZfaq by searching black stain no sanding bedroom furniture. HIP, HIP HOORAY! YOU and this easy to follow video have inspired me, once again ha-ha, with a sense of renewal, vigor & determination to get these much overdue projects done once and for all. Thank you so much for putting this awesome information out there. You are a blessing. PS - I too have chalk painted, one time - my bed. It came out gorgeous - high dollar looking, lots of compliments, etc., but man it was a process, and lots of cleanup afterwards too.

Nice tips. I've always primed my jobs that will be pained a light color and recently switched to Zinsser BIN shellac based primer. The stuff sticks to everything, hides the stain bleed through and goes on very thin. Two coats, a very light sanding (remove any bumps) and then top coat is all you need.

I would suggest using Floetrol additive to the paint. Helps with flow otu and brush marks. I use it when spraying acrylic latex paint for kitchen cabinets. Sherwin Williams s the best. Everybody is painting everything and calling it finishing. Real wood finishing takes skill. I did it for a living for years. One day another generation will be stripping all this paint off of this wood. Painting furniture was popular in the 1920s. We were stripping it off of antiques in the 1960s and 70s.

Thank you so much for sharing your talent and spending your time on creating these enormously helpful videos! So, 3 cheers to you!!! I’m so thankful for this diy video! A coffee table that I was getting ready to trash, I am now going to try to resurrect! Quick question: Do you wait very long before applying the second coat? Thank you so much for your help👏👌👍😘

I used your technique on a radio cabinet I was restoring. Even used the same paint and color. I’ll admit I was apprehensive as I’ve only ever sprayed furniture, but the cold weather made that impossible. It came out great, to the naked eye you would swear I sprayed it. Thanks again. 👍

I was surprised when I saw your top-coat method because I do my top-coat exactly like you do! With the foam roller wiping it down. The only thing I do differently is I get the roller damp first and thin down the poly just a bit. Whenever the topcoat starts feeling "sticky or "grippy" like if you can feel the roller dragging on the surface, I go and rinse off the roller again. I don't press hard, I just skim smoothly over the surface. It should be easy because of the damp roller and thinning down the poly increases the viscosity. It should feel a bit slippery going on. I apply it in thin coats and sand with a super-fine sandpaper in between. After the 2nd coat! Before that, you run the risk of sanding through to the paint layer. I've used this technique of cabinet doors and I'm able to build up really thick durable smooth finishes that look professionally finished.

I’ve painted four pieces using Ovation and I love it as well. I used to work at Lowe’s in the paint department so I’ve tried every brand they sell (including the expensive brands) and I agree with you, I love Ovation.

I wouldn’t disagree with you but I could buy a gallon of paint for $8.10 after my discount. I bought MANY gallons of paint and stain. I could speak from experience when answering questions customers had about paint.

The OVATION Plus has PRIMER in it. Guess SUGGESTION: You might try stacking the drawers and REVERSE front/back on each layer so that you isolate the painted panels while keeping the surfaces vertical. GREAT VIDEO!

foam brush WON'T do it. I have been painting for a long time and used all kinds of foam brushes and they all leave marks (won't be silky smooth). This can ONLY be accomplished two ways; one with adding plaint conditioner like Flood or professional sprayers. All other methods WILL leave foam and brush marks.

OMG! My sprayer broke so I had to hand roll Behr Marquee matte paint on a dresser and side table. I kept thinking of you and your technique but I think my paint was too thick to avoid an orange peel texture and roller streak marks. I'm so bummed! Could it be that the paint was simply too thick? Oddly enough I checked your channel to see how you apply the poly and saw you had just posted your technique. Great timing. Thanks for sharing!

@@blacksheephouse I've been using a Wagner Flexio 590. The 590 is no longer sold but is comparable to the 4000. It was a good sprayer to start with but had some limitations. I just ordered the Graco Ultra Cordless. It's a big investment but I've been researching sprayers and have been impressed with this one. I decided against a pneumatic sprayer since I don't currently have an air compressor or the place to put one. Do you ever thin your paint? The Behr Marguee I'm using is so thick and no matter what I do I keep ending up with roller streak marks and the orange peel texture. So frustrating.

I am a second generation professional painter with 38 years experience. We have specialized in high quality painting finishes only. First and foremost you doing a great job but if you want to take it to another level of quality With just a few more simple tips. First of all the product that you are using is a water-based paint. All acrylics are water-based paint. Therefore you can use water to thin it. The majority of your high quality professional coatings (this excludes all of your home improvement store paints including bear)are made to thin to the user's specifications. They are not made to use straight out of the can. It is the biggest number one mistake that homeowners and amateurs make is to apply the professional product straight out of the can it is too thick. Therefore leaving brush marks. if you add a cup of water to a gallon to start with And stir thoroughly. The paint will lay down to a smooth finish without brush marks, and dry to look just like it was sprayed. Unfortunately the finish on the dresser in the video is nowhere near smooth. It has a rough texture due to the roller stimple that the roller left behind. If you simply take a high quality prudy nylon/ polyester brush with medium firmness, and long stroke the brush across the surface Immediately after rolling it will be a extremely smooth when dry, and look like it was sprayed and no one will believe that you brushed it. 🙂

Thanks! It’s super smooth to me 🖤 and I’ve sprayed many times so I know what smooth looks like. In the close ups I was showing wet paint so it may have looked bumpy but once it dries down I’m telling you, it’s really smooth. I have had trouble with streaks when I add water or floetral to my blacks when I brush or roll but maybe I’m doing something wrong there bc I don’t have that same problem when I spray. I’ll give your technique a try and I’m sure I’ll make a video if it goes well!
