Once again, I'm diving back into Debian Linux madness, this time in livestream form to allow folks to experience in real time the madness that is setting up and installing Debian Linux 2.1 on real hardware with my Thinkpad 380D.
Last time we explored Linux on the Thinkpad 380D, I only covered install, but this time, we're going to go much more in-depth with exploring setting up X, the "wonderful" choices in desktop environment, the pain in getting NeoMagic displays up and running and maybe trying to upgrade through successful versions of Debian. I'm going to be performing an in-depth exploration of Debian 2.1, answering questions in real time, and just having a good time with all.
During this stream, we're going to start by FIPS the harddrive and attempting to dual boot with Windows and Linux, go through the Debian Liux installation process, setup X and maybe even do some retro web surfing, and then follow up with exploring starOffice or other commerical software. Depending on time, we may try upgrading through every version of Debian on real hardware.
This is a follow-up to my original videos on 90s Debian Linux and this boxed set of Debian with I trashed nearly two months ago.

As someone that has only been using Linux for about 20 years and is squarely in "Team Windows" (blech), the problem with Linux is linux users/devs. Linux "advocates", by-and-large, only want programmers to be using computers at all. "If you can't compile your own kernel, you shouldn't be using a computer!" I have been baffled by this attitude my entire developer career and seeing that it goes back even further than my personal experience is just sad. But, man, I love watching your videos!

Wow, I remember installing Debian Linux 2.1 in 1999. Happy days. Mind you I mostly used RedHat at that time. As far as I recall neither was much harder than installing Windows 98 from a stack of floppy disks.

Now, you may be looking at the chat replay, and you may see me looking like an absolute buffoon in the chat. No, i don’t think that wayland would work in 19 friggin 99, no, Ncommander is NOT a sucker for pain, i wasn’t even talking to him. I was referring to other people in the chat, but i didn’t know that Ncommander would respond and think i was talking to him. Sorry everyone, I’m not an idiot, I’ll do better next time. [also, I was playing earlier moments of the stream, so I did not see Ncommander responding until it was too late.]

Had similar cd drive issues on a thinkpad 770. Reinstalling windows 98se was possible by everytime the disk stopped reading just ejecting and reinserting and hitting continue at the error message. Would work for a couple files then do it all over again. Had that dualbooted with tinycore and used a Linksys usb Wi-Fi dongle to get online in Linux with its one USB port. Love that computer going to have to pull it out of storage and play around with it.

Damn man, I had wanted to watch this stream live but couldn't due to time constraints. I remember going through a very similar situation in 2000 installing Potato on an IBM ThinkPad 560 with a 100MHz Pentium and 24MB ram. No Internal CDROM, boot floppies copied on to actual floppies, (there were lots,) and having to hack workarounds for an unsupported, (at the time,) PCMCIA tplink network adapter to be able to access the CDROM on a remote machine. It took me a hell of a lot longer and I resorted to drink and drugs to get me through the process. When I'm working and earning again you're gonna get some patreon monies from me.

I am impressed with your knowledge and what you managed to get up and running. Slackware was a breeze compared to this. And you solved the Bcksp not working and I learned the Ctrl H substitute. Sound was very sketchy in those days. I think RedHat was the best option for that. I also remember editing the OLVWM menu on my system. Fun but arduous.
@NCommander
@NCommander 3 жыл бұрын
Ctrl-H shows up even in modern UNIX. It's due to an ambiguity in the ASCII specification that goes all the way to Research UNIX at Bell Labs. The Ctrl-H trick is something you tend to run a *lot* in if you had to work with commerical UNIXes

I remember installing this back in the day without any knowledge of linux and got asked all these questions. No clue what to answer and how to get back to question if I wanted to change it later. My understanding of English as a 14 year old German teenager wasn't that sophisticated either. No internet, the HowTo docs folder was all I got, only partly translated to German.

Have you considered your CD Roms might have issues due to cables or Motherboard connection point? You could even have a power issue. But then again CD drives are notorious for being incapable of finding the start point to read sections on a CD.

"Linux is 99% politics". That's what made me hate software development as a job. I stumbled across a forum post on Debian forums where the users there are berating people for using anything other than Debian... Having said that if I go into the linux mint help IRC and you can ask the most "stupid" (no such thing (to a point)) question and people will answer you with no issue. Its probably the case with anything where the silent majority are just fine and there's just 5 people loudly being annoying.

Use pkg-src and bootstrap a basic environment. It starts by compiling the NetBSD compiler, which compiles on anything C. It will then use it to compile the NetBSD libc library and proceed to use that for the latest gcc for your system and architechture, if it doesn't detect correctly feeding this in manually is easy, and then it'll use the gcc and bsd libc to compile gnu toolchain, ansd voila! You have a universal key for a modern gnu environment software. Done this on a HP9000/J76000 which was fully loaded with RAM and four PARISC-2.0 8700 64bit CPUs running HP 11iv3 and the included cc and libraries which are intentially incompatible with GNU in particular and compiling anything is a nightmare of patch and knifing source which often failed if you're not a professinal software engineer. And the HP improved support environment wasn't much better and cost too much for most customers :D Best part? pkg-src repository had support for compiling on it so, I could just let it run the entire thing, takes a few weeks. :D

Thanks for another wonderful stream. Was this release of Linux really an elaborate sh*tpost? Also, thanks for the perspective on politics and Linux which really brings out the worst of both worlds. I vaguely remember the dselect thingey while watching a buddy of mine install linux around 2000 i guess it was. I thought it was rather cool actually... Here in Norway we had a project at the time to bring Linux into schools as an alternative to the Microsoft package/monopoly. Never went too far and now every edu level has drowned in either Ms or Gsuite. I guess you don't need the details [EDIT: for why Linux in schools (Skolelinux) never took off] because you've already answered the question - politics!
@NCommander
@NCommander 3 жыл бұрын
Honestly, you just managed to articulate me feelings on this Debian box set. It can best be described as a high effort s***post that everyone took seriously :/ The thing is that there are very valid reasons why something like Debian or Debian-Edu was sorta stillborn in those markets. Without someone corporately backing them (and I honestly don't consider SPI/etc), you're never going to get the buy in from administrators, and honestly? Given that most Linux distributions were pretty much hot garbage until the later 2000s (I consider Ubuntu 6.06 to be one of, if not the first user usable Linux), and you can see why it all went down the tubes.

Linux is not just politics, hardcore Linux fans bash on a female college student that bought a Dell laptop with Linux installed. She needed the laptop for her college courses and "Ubuntu" wasn't compatible with the software for her college course. She contacted Dell and a representative said Ubuntu works as efficient as Windows. She contacts a local news program and Linux fans lose it chasing clout. They thought she was hired to promote anti-Linux propaganda which wasn't the case. The news gets in contact with a computer technician to help her figure out Linux (rather than installing a fresh version of Windows on her computer). Some hardcore Linux fans are militant equivalent to not making the High School football team, years later, you suddenly get your hands on Arch Linux and now you think you're a computer master. The problem I had with the bashing that Linux hardcore fans used Linux based functions (terminal commands as talking points to bash a non Linux user.
