I despise RMS, but not for his Asperger's persona or sexist comments. It's his core idea that non-free software is immoral. I say, if you want to code something for free, choose any license you want and put it out there. You want to go commercial and sell your software? You can do that too. It's all good. The zealotry he spreads is a real cancer.

I got a couple micro vaxes for free a long while back. I thought I was lucky. Until I powered one up. It took like 15 minutes to boot up into VMS. Not a good look. The two 25 inch color CRTs were impressive. An awful lot of heat and weight for not a lot of oomph.

Totally missed the stream but gonna watch in bits today. Love the wait time and having to slow down and work like it’s the 70s!

Yggdrasil was my very first Linux. I drove from San Jose to Mountain View (not very far) to buy the disk over the counter. Spent the next two days getting my video and sound card to work -- totally worth it! I've been a Linux user ever since.

We’re three years after this. But the FSF continues to stagger along into irrelevance as the rest of the world marches on. If stallman dies, what happens then? Is the fsf solely built around stallman? You gotta build orgs for long term viability Shaming a person into individually choosing not to use OSS has got to be the least effective way to accomplish their goals.

I imagine some Slashdotter "Ballmer is quaking in his boots! Linux is going to take over the world!" and then ... "Oh! You actually mean for people to use this as a completed product.... oh no. This is bad. This is even bad by the standards of the time." What the hell is that mouse configuration? You're a long way from even booting X. We're still in the dial up era but they cheaped out by not giving you every package in the distro, just a base installer and then "if you need to get onto the internet with you ISP go look for help on the mailing lists."

I had this exact machine and PCi card when I worked at Sun in the early 2000s... as I remember I mostly used it for uping my Seti@Home stats. :)

5:00 Presentation Manager is this way because of the infighting between IBM divisions and Microsoft. (Before anyone comments, I'm not a know all person and my sourse is a video by the youtube channel "Another Boring Topic", so please don't act like I'm a person who just argues and doesn't understand opinions or sarcasm/jokes as I'm not).

I love your content, but I have a hard time understanding what you are saying sometimes. Occasionally some of your words are spoken to quickly next to each other , and I can not make them out. Usually when describing something unique. The CC doesn’t help either. Maybe just slow down or deliberately enunciate clearly on uncommon words. Thanks for the great videos.

Ah yes it was a great place to work at the time. Eric Schmidt killed the company by blowing $700 million buying WordPerfect instead of outcompeting MS.

At least the battery is not one of the Varta batteries some people fear because of their tendency to leak as they age. It reminds me of using something a long time ago finding it with the batteries still in but having leaked and the item ruined. Then people wonder why I like to remove batteries from things that I am not using if they are going to be stored for an extended period of time. It is just that I don't like the heartbreak of finding my item damaged from leaky batteries!

4:46 - interesting. Have you had exposure to SGI's "Indigo Magic Desktop", 4Dwm, etc? I _much_ preferred those back in the day. And indeed, frankly miss them, even now.
