What an amazing stream. You guys talking about the ideals of the young vs the politics of the elders hits on something I've been thinking for a long time. In multiple ways, our older generations have been compromising the futures of their children for their own sake. I also resonate strongly with the idea that the youth tend to be right in their protests because they are "fresh" in the lessons of moral/ethical consistency that the generation before them instilled in their youth. At the very least, this is my perspective and experience.

I really liked being in school, I wish it were free (at least for your first bachelor's) where I live. Surrounded by people working toward similar goals, learning on a daily basis (although I have critiques of the 'testing' aspect of schooling), and most importantly to me is it's a time when asking questions is celebrated rather than treated as a problem. At jobs I've had, asking "why do we do x" and "why don't we do y instead of x" has almost universally gotten me labeled as someone trying to start trouble or rock the boat, when I'm just calling out what, to me, seem like clear inconsistencies. The few times I am given answers at all they are usually unsatisfactory and feel like half truths or cop out answers and it's frustrating.

As an Australian I had an accident at work last year in which I cut into my arm with an angle grinder. It was cleaned and looked at a couple of hours later through the emergency room and I had surgery to repair it the following week. The only thing I paid for was the uber to and from the hospital.

I think with the hospital bill, most Americans has the individualist mindset that "If I had to suffer, then you have to suffer too". Similar to the discourse to college/university debt forgiveness. Plus the fear of any system to remove the fanatical burden would increase taxes 10,000%, and give it to undeserved people would solidify the aforementioned mindset.

Because of the public "discovering" Colombus recently, people have forgotten that there is a difference between what I call a "personal discovery" like finding a niche band, and a "broad discovery" like inventing the lightbulb.

The whole blue check response to the 4.5k hospital bill was insane. First of all, that demonstrated that she had "good" insurance in the US. 90% coverage means she had a platinum plan. Most plans are WAY worse than this. I genuinely wonder whether neoliberalism is the actual root of all evil in the US, not simply reactionary politics. Not that this is a political post in any way. We don't talk about politics here. Just good vibes. 🙏🙏🙏🙏

I'ma make this real simple for people, the reason the youth are always at the front of these movements is because they don't have anything to lose yet. us older revolutionaries can't get out there and risk arrest and long hospital recoveries because we have families we have to support and under this system, the act of the protest could get us fired, the arrest could get us fired, the being out of work in the hospital could get us fired and then we don't have the means to support the family... the youth are unhampered by those things, and that's why they can risk so much. That combined with the fact that life hasn't destroyed their hope and idealism yet.

I would love to see this topic in a essay mode. I don't like this live format at all, can barely focus and follow the thought with the constant interruptions and shout outs.

Yeah in fairness we often go on to make video essays about things we discuss on stream, it's a different vibe and not for everyone.

@@WisecrackEDUI was asked to send a link to my first film. I don’t know how to do that but just click my icon and be taken to my first film. Also stick around after the credits. A post credit scene is at the end. Also turn down the brightness on you device so the background isn’t as distracting. I just had trouble finding a suitable location and I did my best to darken the background as much as possible.

If someone thinks life experience makes them a better decision maker they must be a terrible decision maker, because personal experience doesn't inform us about society, it colours our expectations. Science, data, informs. Personal experience biases.
