It’s been 30 years since South Africa’s first democratic elections and at the end of May South Africans have a wide range of political parties to choose from. Yet with several corruption scandals, high levels inequality and unemployment, we wanted to find out in our Street Debate if young people still believe that political parties will fulfill their promises.

"We want leaders who we can respect." This is what one of the participants said in our street debate while talking about South Africa. Would you agree with him? How do you see politics and politicians in SA? President Cyril Ramaphosa's ruling ANC party is projected to lose its majority in South Africa's general election on May 29. For many voters, the polls offer another shot at restoring hope for the nation's democracy. Here's more on it: www.dw.com/en/will-south-africas-2024-election-save-its-democracy/a-69093580

I agree with him. There's been change over the years, but it's been too slow, and political promises haven't been aligning with what has been delivered so far. At the same time, it would be unfair to not acknowledge efforts by many people in politics who actually want change, even those who are in the ruling party.

@@viwembande9497 Uhm, people have been giving solutions for years. Especially from minorities, but do you think anyone wants to listen to those who actually have a reputation of building successful economies? Much of the majority think everything only evolves around them, when white people talk they talk about all South Africans, when many black people talk they talk about black people. Quite easy to spot. The DA has given solutions and have had many for so long. Overall SA is what you get when you put a modern economy in the hands of children who also have the audacity to tell the adults how the world works. Thats what i see when i hear ANC, EFF speak.

Watching from Dallas TX USA. I am a 78 yr old white man and I clearly remember shedding tears of joy watching on tv Madiba walking free. Then the long process of "truth and reconciliation," and then on and on and on.........the main thing is that SA has survived as a democracy even though it is in peril today. But then, so is the USA as we approach our Nov election. If Trump wins that, we have actually lost our democracy. I feel good seeing these young SA's so active. and certainly good will come from their efforts. My advise is be careful for you too could lose your precious democracy. Be diligent, be on guard, and fight to keep it!.

So, the youngsters have all the answers and the solutions on how to fix the country's problems, but majority have chosen not to register to vote? 🤔Sounds logical to me (grin). If anyone has not bothered to register to vote and make a change in their lives out of the misery under the anc, well then, stop complaining and put up with what you get. Simples. You only have yourselves to blame, try again in 5 years' time if there's anything left to salvage.😂

As someone who was a high school debater, and a damn good one at that, youth, these kids, are not qualified to debate the nation's politics. They only THINK they know what's going on but they are sorely uninformed about the dynamics. There are adults in South Africa, likely the majority who have no clue where all the money comes from that is spent on giving 'free' electricity, water, 'free' RDP houses, 'free' healthcare, 'free' education, and 'free' child care grants. I put 'Free' in quotes because the reality is everything free to the majority is not free... TAXPAYERS pay. These kids are talking buzzwords they hear on TV and soapies like "gender based violence", "equity", "equality", "disparity" and "transformation". They don't really understand. I'm saying this because I thought I was informed when I was in school. I did the research for my debating competitions. We would win by dropping facts and dropping mikes... but in adulthood, in hindsight, I was as ignorant as it gets. This street debate should have had 33% SASSA grant recipients, 33% illegal settlement residents and 33% taxpayers... and all of them above 30 years old so we get views from people who have lived the full spectrum of life.

There's a reason why this video is centered around the youth, as per the title. You just need to realize that those who were interviewed here are only a fractional portion of the youth. Trust me, we know how things work in this country coz you can just open a book and learn about these things. You can't come to this platform and undermined the youths opinions while the elderly are greedy, selfish, corrupt, impotent and fickle. We are fucken tired of having to RESPECT old hags that don't respect us, the nation and the future. Say what you wanna say but in 30 years... it'll be us dealing with the shambles not y'all so let the youth speak, let the youth act and let the youth learn.

@@YETI_312 My guy (girl), I pay tax. So much tax that it is more than some people's salaries. I tell you if you have not paid tax you know nothing. I'm not saying this to insult you. When you work your ass off, have to pay R30 000 to get your car fixed so you can get to work, pay for expensive fuel to get to work. Spend days at the office which you could be spending with your children, and can't rest unless a boss approves your request for a holiday you will understand the pain of earning a salary. When you have gone through that pain, to then have 1/3... 1 full third, taken away by government because "it is not fair to others"... you will understand the pain of paying tax. When you have financial dreams like owning your own home and car and giving your kids a good life, and work for that dream only to be dispossessed of your reward because there are people DEMANDING free houses, water, electricity, NSFAS funds and so much more... and you know that someone else promised them those things with YOUR money... you will understand the pain of tax. Opening a book is an academic exercise. Reading about tax and Soweto '64 is an academic exercise. To LIVE the experience of not being able to afford something even though you earn enough, but the tax reduces it is a viceral, real, personal and deep pain. These kids haven't gotten there yet. Talk to taxpaying students and they'll tell you what i mean. I don't need to respect kids who haven't yet earned their stripes. Like I was when I was their age, they know nothing of life.

@@AlternativPerspectivthe youth voicing out their frustration and wanting to be heard from the failing government is not what's causing your problems. The government's failure to have a progressive and growing economy is. I'm 24, a freelance fashion designer who is also struggling to run a business by myself due to the increasing cost of resources, but I'm going to be vocal and voice my anger to the government or political parties. Having taxpaying students isn't enough to solve the problems that we have, because even if you, students and workers who pay tax to help stabilize our economy, it isn't going to help if we have an ineffective government that misappropriates taxpayers money through fruitless and wasteful expenditure, corruption and effective and progressive planning. All these parties talk about increasing 4 million jobs, fixing in infrastructure and getting more foreign investors to help boost the economy. But not a single one talks about how are they going to do that or talks about the simplest, most effective way to tackle youth unemployment, which is overhauling and changing the education system from basic to higher education so there can be a streamlined "education-to-job" pipeline. We've had a useless curriculum and basic education minister for over 10 years who hasn't done much to make sure that when learners choose their subjects in Gr 10, they can guarantee that it leads to a successful studying career in university. We need more high schools that need to be schools of specialization in certain industries, and universities and industries, whether it be agriculture, science, technology, arts and culture, etc, partner with those high schools to guarantee that they have an easier path into that specific job market. And universities need to partner more with government and private industries to help students with internships that can lead to job opportunities. Our universities and industries expect us to get work individually, but how can we when companies expect you to have 5 years of experience in a certain job or to have an Honors degree, because a Bachelors doesn't mean much when applying these days. When the government can overhaul and change the education system, then we can talk about taxpaying students because it won't be a burden on just the working class as 3rd and 4th year students will already be in a job paying some small form of tax. Voice your anger at the government. Not the youth. We are all trying to survive and making a decent living like you.

If EFF ever gets in power South Africa will go down the drain. We need leaders to look up to, who have respect towards other people, who know how to behave with other world leaders. If the EFF gets in power all investments will be taken out of South Africa and many companies will leave. It would be the worst what could happen to South Africa

Yeah if the so called “clean DA” was inclusive of black people we would have voted for them but they chose to be as arrogant as the ANC leaders so they’re not different. I don’t get why yt people act like it’s a color thing that the country was ran down the drain. It’s uneducated, selfish and greedy black individuals; if you know black people’s values you’d know that none of them condone such behaviour.
